Pretentious but very bad as a result
Do you remember the first movie where you saw some great cinematographic methods introduced, like the creepy music in horror movies or the plot twists in 90s movies, or the Tarantino's desert frames and way operator's work? Then do you remember how all of those were copied and overused? Oh well that's what represents this movie, otherwise said the Ali express version of "North water", "The terror", "Taboo" darkish type of movies. It's just so obvious the way it was shot and the screenplay...to the point of insulting the director behind this movie. Sorry if tou expected a lot more like me! To put 8 note here for me is ridiculously high. 3 is the best I can give to this..."cloning".
La peur (2015)
Not a fake heroes movie
I am really surprised to see such a low rating for one of the best movies I've ever seen about WW1?!
It's not a movie telling the"glorious" story of a platoon/war hero or whatever most of the movies on the same topic are trying to achieve. It's quite the opposite, all that it shows is the daily grotesque life of the soldiers, the massacre without a filter in a poetic way, without anyhow making it unrealistic.
It's a hard one to watch and handle yet a masterpiece. I would recommend it to all the warmongers that are still thinking there is something glorious about the wars in general.
Enjoy!
Pig (2021)
Cage is not a trap here.
Don't be turned off because Cage is in it. The second good movie of Cage. :)
Quo vadis, Aida? (2020)
OMG the movie is sooo good!
Srebrenica, the biggest military crime in Europe since the end of the WWII!
I had no high expectations about the movie before watching it. I was ready to see yet another one of the trend like "how Serbs are bad and how poor Bosnians are the victims" (I'm not saying that it wasn't the case but looping on the same fact doesn't bring the added value we are searching for).
Well it turned to be an absolute masterpiece!
I had a hard hard time to sleep that night after watching it. It's so human, no heroic actions, no extraordinary characters that you would see in every Hollywood production. Even the typical Balkan hyper dramatization and "overplay" was missing here.
It was so realistic, so well played. I even went and started to compare the scenes to the real footage and videos in youtube about those events and found the scenes horribly horribly realistic. You'll not see the "glory" of the war scenes or the naturalistic scenes of the atrocities as in the Holocaust movies but you will feel all those amazingly realistic emotions of anger, desperation, lack of power and confusion, expecting the inevitable horror and even... hope.
There is another aspect of the movie I wish to highlight. We all watched all those great movies for the WW2 concentration camps but even if we feel sorry for the victims, the feeling that those are events of another time when the people were different, minds were thinking different and this so so fake feeling of security because "it will not happen to me or my generation or in Europe again", BUT here in this movie you'll take that cold shower that will wake you up.
This is a movie to be watched to be lived through the screen.
My lake (2020)
Masterpiece of the albanian cinematography!
It's so odd that nobody yet wrote a review about this cinematographic masterpiece. It's so beautifully shot. The characters are so real, no overacting which otherwise is the biggest problem in my opinion for the balkan movies. It's harsh and simple like the life proves to be in this region.
The nature around the Prespa lake is very well exposed, those stunning views!
It made me think of a non commercial version of an Italian mafia movie with Balkan taste and focus pointed on the teenagers and how they handle this reality.
I had almost no experience with Albanian cinema but this movie definitely made me wish to see more.
Thank you, I enjoyed it!
A Certain Kind of Silence (2019)
Rational in its sick way
I had no high expectations while checking the score the movie had in IMDB, then I was surprised in a very good way. The movie had this weird atmosphere that can be find in similar plots, where the rich people have their own way of educating their children and one can feel the constant escalation without loosing real connection with the "normal" or at least until the half of the movie. What surprised me the most is that the story is based on real events from the recent past and linked to the rituals and believes of a religious community. Though there is no real focus on that, so until the end you do not see it so obvious. Just successful people who has their own rules and you would try to learn from them liking the lifestyle they have, especially when you are young and open, which was in my opinion the way to show how normal people can become part of the community. All the scenes are well shot, the actors are great, the accents, the lack of emotion or suppressed emotion made the great finish of the details of the movie. Current score presents the movie well underrated. 10/10 for me.
