The Mole: Undercover in North Korea (2020)
These guys..absolutely incredible..
What can I say...it's just unbelievable what these two pulled off...
Hats off to Ulrich and Mr. James, both of them must have b*lls of steel..
Whats even scarier is the wheeling and dealing going on between africa and DRK, especially how they 'deal' with the people..
In the end it all comes down to corruption and the glorification of an isolated country where not even the inhabitants want to live.
The sadness of it all is that before watching this movie I was well aware of certain occurrences (living in Africa).
But to see what is actually happening between countries and the seemingly ease of building a weapons / drug factory in Africa is simply shocking.
DRK wants to make money, at it has extremely limited export capabilities, so therefore sell guns and drugs..
It's just sadness...
Holes in the Sky: The Sean Miller Story (2021)
When a documentary gets a little too real..
The first 10-15mins or so i had to pause and check if this was a real documentary or not, but i decided against it and carried on watching..
I must say from the start, Ash and Channell's 'acting' was so real it unnerved me a bit, so much so that after 25 mins in i had to stop and tell myself : "this is just a story, everyone is fine.." (I hope..)
Sean also played exceptionally well, if this was acting it was the most fluid form I've ever seen..
This to me is not horror of course, it is a drama/paranormal documentary style film..
But oh my word did it leave an impact..
I must commend all the people who worked on this, all actors and crew did a phenomenal job
Will I watch it again?....not a chance....lol.
Hellraiser (2022)
it's that CGI again vs practical effects, and it shows..
I'll try and keep this short...as a Clive Barker fan and growing up with Hellraiser I had...little expectations for the remake...but seeing Barker as a producer it did raise (see what i did there) my hopes....alas...
The story is slow...and i mean slow...too much emphasis on characters (but not character development because all of them are simply forgettable).
The opening scene was promising....and certainly the most 'nailbiting' of the whole movie...
From there the production crumbles and tries to give a new spin on Hellraiser...gone is the suspense, the gore, the blood.... and entered are the terrible CGI effects...no shiny slimy cenobites this time...seems like they've all been cleaned up with a paintbrush and some powder to get rid of the original gory appearance... Pinhead (pingirl?) looks like cinderella and wouldnt even scare my three year old granddaughter
Hellraiser was built on gore...blood and shiny pieces of flesh, ...characters torn apart and close-up shots of hooks going into flesh....what you get is mediocre sound effects, no blood, no gore...no flesh... you get a production dictated by disney to make Hellraiser family friendly ....
Oh Mr. Barker,...you had such sights to show us....yet you chose none...
The Batman (2022)
Just....a let down..
I suppose acting isn't a requirement in 'Action' movies anymore....my goodness...I saw Robin Pattinson in "The Lighthouse", and what a performance that was..
In The Batman (..is there any other Batman??) he portrays a pseudo meme of a spoiled forgotten punker with a "didnt have any sleep for a few nights" look plastered upon his face..
it seems portraying batman requires only an octave lowered voice and a less than squinty angry look.. the obvious dark make-up doesnt help here...many times when batman tried to be serious or 'dangerous' i just laughed...
the story...or convoluted lack thereof, was well...as rising as a christmas yule log without the bicarbonate... it flopped...
Paul Dano was actually believable in the first opening minutes but fizzled out with his bad-boy laugh and shrieks...which were wholly misplaced.
No suspense...no real antagonist...cheap explosions and worst of all no gadgets...
whats next? Batman uses a grappling hook and has to manually climb onto a building...
what a waste of resources...
my popcorn was more dangerous than Batman's breath...
Birth (2004)
simply...superb
What can i say....
Ms. Kidman resembled a perfect portrayal of Mia Farrow's Rosemary.... slightly frail and dominated by her soon to be husband.
The pace is slow and building, springing dread and the feeling of a impeding doom...
by the time we see what drives the main characters it is all too late.....but yet the longing and despair for a lost loved one will never go away..
this movie left me with my jaw open....and a little tear in my eye..
superb performances by this young actor...
Fireboys (2021)
fire love lost...
An intimate account of young offenders who get a chance to learn firefighting skills at Pine Cove..
over a period of months we follow a group of young offenders seeking a way out, some want to escape solitude whilst others seek to build a new life..
Fire is their salvation...or so it seems
As the state of California uses incarcerated felons to be trained as firefighters....the same system ignores them after they have served their debts...
some make it through a harsh training program, whilst others fail,...only to be put back into their cells...
in the end it all comes down to how bad you want it....and how strong you are making it in the outside world...
this documentary was superbly shot and edited...giving us a glimpse into the lives of young men who otherwise had no means of making it into the normal world...
Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)
wow...worse than...well...nothing
Thought this movie would be mildly interesting but i didn't expect much to begin with...
First of all this seems an unnecessary waste of Mr. Hardy's talent...but i'm sure he received a handsome paycheck so i can't fault him for that..
The movie however, i don't even know where to begin, from the overly bad acting to the 'Venom' alien and his stupid quibs and catchphrases..
this is the first time i feel i was robbed.1.5 hours of my life....and i have been robbed before, in real life...
what a load of utter trash...i cleaned my internet cache after this because even my laptop felt dirty...
A Quiet Place Part II (2020)
Eh.....is this an add-on for part 1 ?
I expected some more development and was wondering how the story would progress after the discovery of sonic 'weaponry' in part 1.... I was hoping it wouldn't be : " meet other guy, try and survive in bunker, get medical supplies and survive"
but that's exactly what it was...a rather lackluster continuation of part 1...no new development, just some more surviving etc....i was hoping for a mothership and stuff...but no..
huge let down, and sorry to say sign language acting only goes so far...
Painter (2020)
Indie movie with...well...a difference?
I watched this movie and came to the conclusion that being an artist sucks..
I believe the main character Aldis readily agrees with me as he struggles to break through into the world of galleries, artsy people and dicey friends ..
I see in the short description that our protagonist is swept into some sort of 'psychosexual' world...nothing is further from the truth..no psychosex i'm afraid people..
As Aldis meets a generous older benefactor who believes he is brilliant things slowly start to fall in place for Aldis as he confronts his past and the latent hatred he has harboured towards a fellow successful painter named Ryan..
The performance of the actors is so-so but still passable..
The film is nice..and interesting...don't expect Velvet Buzzsaw, but it is refreshingly novel and mildly captivating..I also don't agree this movies falls
under Horror...as there is no such reference in this film...it is a drama..simple
The Devil All the Time (2020)
sweepingly beautiful...
One of those movies that slowly embraces you with the beauty of acting and vistas beyond our reach, tucked far away in the memories of the late 60's
the stories told in this movie are all linked together, tales of grief and loss, joy and revenge...through it all the church commands an ever foreboding presence and one cannot help but feel this amazing movie lets us know that not only religion back then was tainted with the blood of others, but also that very little might have changed in the present..
Tom Holland puts in a stellar performance, as well as the other actors....
this is cinema as it was supposed to be...
superb..
Tread (2019)
Another talented life lost...
When watching this very well 'crafted' documentary one question kept springing to mind....what about his long lost girlfriend...the one he loved so much..
Even though this is a gripping insight into a man and his fight against an unjust system it could have been perfected with some more 'unbiased' interviews from family and friends...in the end this docu slanted towards 'he was mad..' but I believe he wasn't...
even in a grown up society where we should all be able to thrive, the bullies still exist..
And Marvin Heemeyer fell victim to this...and to his own demons..
Watch it....
Dreams of a Life (2011)
my only perfect 10
Never have i seen a documentary that gripped me so hard, so pure and sad..
i will never understand what really happened, but one thing is for sure..the life of a beautiful young lady was lost..leaving only questions and pain
my heart goes out to Martin...he will never recover from this
watch it, talk about this...and never ever let this happen again
Sauna (2008)
unlike aything I have seen before, simply superb
I will be short about this movie...Sauna is one of those films that will stick with you long after you have finished it...
The pureness of the characters portrayed makes this movie amazing to watch.
Two brothers are assigned as border official, in charge of mapping the border in the northern part of sweden and russia after a long and bitter war comes to an end.
They are accompanied by a small group of russian officials and both parties end up in an forgotten village in a swamp.
What follows next is hard to describe but a definite 'must' to see..the coldness and bleak atmosphere of both the landscape and sullen mood of the characters is as strong as the actors who portray them.
The acting was nothing short of outstanding and i can't give enough praise to the director who mixed both swedish and russian monologues throughout the story.
this is called a Horror, but i see it as a visceral drama set deep in the woods of sweden midwinter, where anything and everything can happen.
amazing..
The Irishman (2019)
good acting but.....ehm
I Love mafia/crime movies, especially ones 'based' on true life events (whatever that may mean)..
Even though I love the two big names - DeNiro and Pacino- their acting seems to be a bit.....stagnant, stuck in repetitive mode for the last 10 15 years...
Don't get me wrong...they can act like masters....but it is all the same and this movie seems to be another goodfellas, although not that good....
Their facial expressions - DeNiro's sullen mouth down look and Pacinos wide opening eyes as in 'surprise!'- still remain the same after all these years..
To me this doesn't feel like a super performance, they just play everyday characters...the thing is...they both play normal people...acting like normal people...and maybe playing a mob guy is the easiest thing to do,..,
Pesci puts down a great performance...better than DeNiro and Pacino i would readily say....his anger is subdued but palpable....and it shows
all in all the Big names in this movie (two of them) underperform or at least rehash years gone past and applied a quick 'do-over' so as to please the audience with another 'dazzling' performance....for me it doesn't work.
Both DeNiro and Pacino have been thrown a bone by Scorsese in a bid to rejuvenate an already over the top duo to try and market them in a movie which has been told countless times....mafia again...and again.
the true praise should go to Scorsese for actually taking this leap of faith and stick his name onto it....but with names like DeNiro and Pacino both the director and the studio knew they had a winner...
and that's sad for cinema...and sad for movie lovers alike...
because it shows once more the audience is an extrapolated data pool which suggests actors over movie quality...and in the end...that is what kills quality
Thunder Road (2018)
A beautiful sadness
I'm not sure how to review this movie...but with a smile and some tears I can only say what an amazing performance by Jim Cummings..
The road the character traverses throughout this movie is nothing short of heartbreaking...and Mr. Cummings' performance makes this movie all the more exceptional.
For me this was not a comedy-drama, as I fail to see the comedic element, but this was more a holiday in sadness, sprinkled with some distant hope...and an uncertain future
The Spy (2019)
masterful and haunting
This 6 part series gripped me during the first few minutes..Although I had reservations regarding the 'serious' acting abilities of Mr. Cohen they all evaporated into pure bliss when I watched this thrilling and utterly unbelievable story about an ordinary man who became a top Israeli spy under extraordinary circumstances.
The setting of the tone was superb and thrilling...the execution of character development (and ultimately believe-ability) was genius.
I watched in awe as the story unfolded and many time thought "I can't believe he did this and not get caught"
But as we see in the opening scene he does get caught...and it is a moment i won't easily forget.
I wondered what I would have done in a similar situation, but as you watch this series you will come to the same conclusion as I did :
No ordinary human being -without cohones of steel- could have pulled this off
magnificent piece of acting...and film making
In the Tall Grass (2019)
grass isn't always greener...
Although i dont consider this a 100% Stephen King movie the strange factor and weirdness overtones did evolve throughout the movie.
Set almost exclusively in a field where lost people try to find each other under increasingly foreboding circumstances.
The movie does not explain how or why...it just is..
The characters in the movie endure the grasp of solitude and sinking depression as they come to realize they cannot escape, and are doomed in time..
The ending is fairly satisfying...and i'm sure a lot of people will speculate about the outcome...but, for me it was...meh....and i needed to cut the lawn anyway
La casa de papel (2017)
La Casa de Perceccion...
Saw this title a few times on Netflix but never watched it until I could no longer hold my curiosity...
My only wish is I should have watched it sooner...
Character development and storyline unfolding is brilliant, as are the social evolutionary traits of the individuals in the gang.
The chemistry between the actors is highly palpable and adds a great dimension to an already amazing story
I binge watched this until my eyes burned, at night i couldn't sleep and sometimes found myself sneaking in a new episode at 4 in the morning..
Simply amazing...
and oh...Nairobi, mi amore !
Papillon (2017)
The suffering is lost..
When reviewing an existing title there is always the caveat of falling into the "The original was better" category.
It's something I rarely do since I find it unfair to bother with absolute comparison since the 'remake' is exactly that..., a remake.
However, a remake signifies something better, something stronger.
But in the case of Papillon (2017) I'm afraid this is not the case.
Firstly, the heat. In the original I constantly felt uneasy and scratchy, the heat/humidity in the movie got to me throughout, granted the perspired faces of Hoffman and McQueen were a combination of oil and water but still.
I don't think I saw a drop of sweat in Papillon (2017)
In the remake I also clashed with the main protagonists. Henri (charlie hunnam) is way too young and seemingly more at home in a movie like The Fast and the Furious.
Rami Malek (Louis Dega) did a better job but somehow I couldn't get over that voice.
The cinematography could have been a lot better, as well as the story line development.
All in all this movie comes nowhere near the original.
The lack of 'feeling imprisonment, pain, despair and madness reminded me of a movie which was rushed and unattended.
The original suffering was lost.
