Flyboys (2006)
Disappointing
The flying sequences are well shot (mostly CG) but apart from that it is better to wait for the DVD. The film starts with promise but quickly deteriorates with trite story lines - love interest in danger, the disapproving father, the "Ace" pilot and his protégé - are all employed. If you want to see a great flying film about proving your worth to others and yourself, watch the Tuskegee Airmen (1995).
Flyboys was disappointing, it could have been so much more. I do wish the aircraft were real rather than it all being CG and I feel they should have concentrated on the flight training more as that is a challenge in its won right too.
If you love war and flying films then see this for the dog-fighting sequences that are best on the big screen, otherwise wait for the DVD, the 'making of' may be more interesting than the film.
Long Way Round (2004)
An excellent adventure
A marvellous journey for the audience. This is an addictive series that makes you want to watch the next episode without regard for time. This is a real journey for both men, and of course the crew that travelled with them. Marvel at the European red tape and then the utter desolation of the "Road of Bones". This will touch you as you see them all coping with potentially fatal accidents so far from home, missing family and friends but never giving up when the roads seem to have disappeared giving them no way of moving on. Breath-taking scenery, harsh weather and injuries all add to this heady adventure. I can honestly say, that though the journey was rough, especially through far eastern Russia, and I do not know anyone on this challenging adventure, I feel proud that they succeeded and grateful that I was able to watch this through their eyes.
