Tales of an American Hoodrat (2019)
Barely redeemable
Amateurish script, bad acting, obnoxious characters, I only watched it 'til the end to see if they were held accountable for being such awful teenagers. I like coming-of-age movies but this one just didn't come close to being insightful or edgy. It taught me nothing. Oh, it wasn't even funny!
Dons of Disco (2018)
Who? Why?
90 minutes about an Italian 80's has-been "disco" performer who didn't sing his own songs and the actual singer who never got the credit. This story is not unique. Music producers did this frequently back then: Milli Vanilli just got caught. Really? Who really gives a f?
El Cid (2020)
History and drama in a unique setting.
Tells the real story of Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, known by the latinized version of his Arabic title, "al Sayyid" , el Cid. The story is set when most of the Iberian Peninsula was controlled by multiple Muslim kingdoms (Moors), El Cid's exploits occurred during the 11th century, the beginning of the often mythologized "reconquista", the "Christian" reconquest that ended in 1492. The small "Christian" kingdoms were also constantly warring with each other as well as with the Moors. He was a military leader who served in both Christian and Moorish armies. Though the English subtitles are decent, turn them off if you understand Spanish. I found this as historically accurate as I expected. Looking forward to season 3.
Genera+ion (2021)
Wanted to like it more
Can't decide which fictional character is more self absorbed and obnoxious, Chester in this series or Fraser on We Are Who We Are. Otherwise, I appreciate it's positive queer coming-of-age storyline.
Warrior Nun (2020)
Great location. Irritating teenage lead.
This series is shot mostly in Andalucía and southern Spain. Beautiful! Storyline relies on Catholic medieval nonsense. Tries to blend sci-fi with faith. It's in English so no need to read subtitles which is refreshing. The lead is a teenage girl who has an annoying internal dialogue of angst. If you can move beyond that constant irritant, it's an ok action adventure.
