Turn (2014)
Abraham Woodhull's poker face.
I like the series so far but why is it what the writers have to make Abraham Woodhull a complete idiot sometimes. Yes, he does some amazing spying from time to time but with his poker face it wouldn't matter if he played with his cards turned outwards. When he discovers that his wife has found his secret hiding spot for his cypher book he completely breaks his cover and assumes that he can't reel it all back in. His first response should have been nothing. Just checking on the kid. When he came back down stairs and she confronted him about it from that point on everything he said should have been to steer her assumptions away from him to the soldier that was quartering in their home and sleeping in that very room. Since there was no reference to his actual name and it wasn't in his penmanship it could have easily been assumed that the ensign was the spy instead and frankly it would have made perfect sense. It's just that sometimes this character thinks very swiftly on his feet and other times it's amateur night. And if Anna strong changes her mind one more time on whether or not she going to keep spying... She's like "you and I should spy." "No, we should stop spying." "Oh no my husband is dead and I want to get revenge, let's start spying again." "I need to keep spying so I'll jump off the whaleboat and swim to shore and nearly start making out with Abraham right in front of her husband and everyone else." She's kinda manic/depressive about the whole spying.
Backcountry (2014)
LOT OF SPOILERS! Just another horror film with characters doing stupid stuff to get themselves into trouble.
If the two hikers had been moderately intelligent outside of their occupational task (landscaper and lawyer)this would have been a boring movie. But this movie follows most horror flicks with the traditionally easy 'most everyone is an idiot' formula. Why would you take the risk of not taking the free 2oz. map with you? Why would you ever leave your girlfriends cellphone at the car and not even tell her? Yes, it probably wouldn't have reception but maybe it would? Why would you not check your newly smashed big toe as soon as you injured it? Why would you ever invite a guy into your camp who is one banjo away from deliverance and then let him be the alpha male with your girlfriend? Why would you not heed natures blatant warning of the large bear print? And lets stake our tent at the summit during a thunderstorm why don't we. Why would you have your axe/weapon 15 feet away when you know a bear is the area? And how easy is it to remember that you have bear spray right next to you and why wouldn't you unload it as much as you can into the bears face? As soon as she started running from the bear after waiting around and risked getting that diamond ring I knew her head was a rock magnet. And sure enough, boom goes the head. I won't comment on anything else but it just seems like writers have gotten lazy with horror films. Maybe try having intelligent and experienced characters that do, for the most part, the right thing but because of outside factors they get into a predicament. Could be more believable and you wouldn't end up hating the characters because of their stupidity.
