Baby Driver is an end-product of the successful marriage of Edgar Wright's ever-appealing, edited to perfection, fast-paced style of direction, AND GROOVE. I say this, as this 2017 under-marketed knockout, boasts of best in class car-chase mayhem, through pristinely captured intense and thrilling speedster maneuvers rarely seen from pictures of the genre. In these high octane episodes & in moments where Wright steps on the breaks, the fantastic, energetic sound design and OST takes center stage, ushering an insanely catchy, musical-esque level of entertainment. The music then, feels a character of its own, purposeful & weaved meticulously to each scene to elevate and amuse. With these facets plus dialogue that comes drenched with humor and attitude, Baby Driver then comes with unrivaled showmanship and ZERO dull moments.
Apart from Wright's filmmaking brilliance, Baby Driver as well capitalizes on its superbly-written characters. Ansel Egort's Baby, a persona expressive only when it counts, stoic when it doesn't, was a breeze to root for, thanks to Egort's stone cold performance. John Hamm & Eiza Gonzalez easily steal their scenes and comprises & stages one of the most shocking character arcs in recent years. Jamie Foxx on the other hand, takes the cake as the picture's most polarizing persona. He was so damn captivating, with harrowing & homicidal demeanor that is impossible to predict. Badass!
Baby Driver cements itself as one of the best of the year, hands down. Edgar Wright is a phenomenal filmmaker, with cross-generational artistry & style that deserves more & more accolades. Its only quote-unquote weakness, is its outlandish romance. Lily James however, makes it all alright. Yes, Baby Driver is a cinematic stockpile of charisma! 8.5/10.
