Anatomie d'une chute (2023)
Anatomy of a fool
I know, I know. It's my problem. A wonderfully acted, beautifully shot, two and a half hour french "whodunnit" and I feel cheated.
Most viewers, from the reviews I've read on here, got everything and more from this years winner at Cannes. But not me. To my shame, I waited and I waited, for that jaw dropping twist that I felt I deserved. I even stayed for the entire credits in the vain hope that there was a hidden denouement. But no. All I was left with was, did she or didn't she? (or did he?)
I have enough stuff to worry about and adding to it like this isn't helping. It's bad enough having to spend the last twenty years never knowing what happened to Tony Soprano, now I have to ponder the fate of Samuel Maleski too.
Succession (2018)
Whine Barrens
I'd just finished The Sopranos, for the umpteenth time (get a life, blah! Blah!)
I needed a new fix. Better Call Saul, done, (how the **** did this never win an Emmy, or Grammy or whatever the **** you call it) Stranger Things, tick, great fun by the way. Here we were finally, Succession.
So, semi retired, bored as ****, I dived in....well, for a few episodes. This really swept the board at the Gummies? (whatever the **** you call it) Where's Tony Soprano when you need him, or Vecna for that matter. To quote Mr Gervais "Accept your little award, thank your agent and your god and **** off"
Oh, and read the audience Jesse Armstrong.
Avoid at all cost.
Yesterday (2019)
I Believe in Yesterday
Do yourself a favour. Stick Abbey Road on the turntable instead. You'll thank me for it.
Your Honor (2020)
Adam shame
Forgive me but massive spoiler ahead. I actually cheered when the son, Adam, got shot. Why they couldn't have done it in episode one, God only knows. I don't blame Hunter Doohan, a fine actor and undeserved of a character as weak as this. By episode two you'll be wishing his father had just turned him in. Bryan Cranston is superb and manages to keep you caring, for what I don't know, but he got me through 10 episodes and the god awful ending. Excellent supporting cast, especially the wonderful Carmen Ejogo and the always superb Isiah Whitlock Jr. But please, no second season. It's done.
Fargo (2014)
Go further
Just revisited Fargo season one during this endless lockdown. I loved it every bit as much as the first visit but I was still left, second time round, with a slight empty feeling.
It's the demise of Lester. For me the pivot of the entire show was the duel back and forth between Molly and Nygaard. I know things don't always turn out the way you want them, especially in the whiteout world of Fargo but having invested so much in this central plot I so wanted Molly to be the one to catch her man. After all, Gus gets Malvo and hey ho, redemption, but not poor Molly. Instead we have a very weak race through the snow in that ends inevitably for Lester with that sinking feeling. The same sinking feeling I had watching the final scenes play out before me.
