Bright Lights: Starring Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds (2016)
Bright Lights was degrading
First of all, I am sad about the passing of the ladies, Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher. Their lives are quite relevant and fascinating.
Second, and sadly, more important, I hope we get a chance to see a true documentary that these two deserve. While the truth is important, if the horrors of misfortune and tragedy, outshine or overshadow the blessings, there would appear to be no intent to honor the deceased. It is my opinion that Bright Lights was more of a money-grubbing trashy reality TV style slap in the face of humanity. HBO should be ashamed for letting this appear. At the very least, call it a MOCKumentary and not a documentary.
A low level for bad taste for HBO.
Star Trek Beyond (2016)
Star Trek: Biotch!
To be a fan of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek, you are going to appreciate social implications and importance of individual character development as well. With the development of high tech gadgetry, people in that world seemed to be very conscious of the possible negative affect of overwhelming underdeveloped or complacent societies, as was seen in the beginning of Star Trek: Into Darkness. I grew up watching the original series. And I have grown up watching TV series and movies develop on Roddenberry's concept. I loved his concept.
Star Trek: Beyond has finally taken me to the end of the universe. I cannot see myself trifling with the idea that there is any hope to improve on Star Trek's future. I was OK with ST:2009 and ST:ItD but ST:B left me shaking my head in disappointment and hopelessness. I imagine that a lot of people who liked this movie would probably also make an effort to see Fast and Furious. So be it, I am not one of those people.
I cannot blame Justin Lin for my feelings. He is obviously talented. I do, however, blame the entire movie industry. It seems to me that movie trailers are now more important to develop than the movie is. I would have thought that most studios would want their fans leaving the theater with love for the movie as a whole but instead, we now see people talking about "parts" of the movie they liked best. This, of course, does not apply solely to ST:B.
While I am not from an underdeveloped world, I feel so many movies like ST:B are senselessly overwhelming people like myself with overwhelming destruction, overwhelming drunken-state and stupid jokes from characters one might think were in a dire situation, overwhelming luck with heavy equipment operation and overwhelming assault on reason.
Beam me up Gene, I am overwhelmed and tired of this crap.
Cinderella (2015)
Branagh's talent is no fantasy
As one who has been around for decades and seen more than his fair share of movies(from documentaries to fantasies) and been enjoying the merging of modern technology with super hero movies, I can, with much love and admiration, offer only the highest praise for the most beautiful and magical "Cinderella" of 2015.
From the unbelievably beautiful music from Patrick Doyle and the incredibly remarkable directing skills of Kenneth Branagh to the most often and typically judged acting and/or story, I was totally immersed in this monumental work of art. Everything was at the top of the rating scale.
Yes, Branagh directed Thor(which I very much enjoyed and was proud of his accomplishment). But Branagh must have been on a mission with Cinderella, making this movie unforgettable and totally memorable. It must be said that all the actors were supreme.
While I sometimes rate movies with a ten because I enjoyed the movie so much, I do not think I have ever rated a movie with a ten, knowing nothing could be done any better to satisfy me any more, until now. Patrick Doyle, Kenneth Branagh and all involved deserve the highest awards.
