The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Four Minutes (2023)
Cute but disappointing and unfocused. Rushed like the whole season.
I'm not giving 1/10 because of the core scene with Midge fighting once more to win against the world, which was great.
I loved this show, but honestly apart from the aforementioned scene, this last episode (and last season tbh) is such a disappointment:
- The time jumps make perfectly no sense.
- Most character arcs are left unclosed.
- Precious minutes were wasted during this last episode
Let's get into details:
- Time jumps: seriously why start with this Lenny Bruce scene? What does it add to the plot? Absolutely nothing. Also, why the second scene with Bruce... Only for him to give her this little note she'd put into her bra later on? Useless.
- Most character arcs are left unclosed: there were some major subjects that needed to be dealt with: Midge's relationship with her adult kids, Abe's finally acknowledging Midge's success, Midge & Susie's relationship (how did they make up?!), Midge & Joe giving it another shot. But instead of this, what do we get? Magical future relationship of Midge and Susie, of them being good old friends, because yes the making up part was left off-screen. Honestly useless.
- Precious minutes were wasted during this last episode: I already covered this in my previous points. Important moments could've been shown to close the TV show, but instead we had these useless scenes with Lenny & Susie, that do not bring a thing to the plot and character arcs.
-- This last season felt rushed and weird. Time jumps were a useless and confusing artificial device.
Spriggan (2022)
Clichéd, boring, looks like a parody
Seriously these guys have just mixed all the current tropes, with 0 taste, no originality whatsoever.
Take some mecha, add a little "ancient civilization tech" here and there, add a twist of stupid evil characters with 0 depth, and there you have it.
That's Spriggan for you ladies and gentlemen!
Couldn't even finish the first episode for how blatant this all was.
The Undoing (2020)
Slow, lacks action, dull scenario, full of useless stuff
I don't know what to say. This TV show was recommended to me by many people. I found it boring to death. Nothing really happens throughout the whole season. It's like you're watching just because you're waiting for something to happen. But it never does. There is no plot twist. It seems like the movie director doesn't know what to do with the time he has on hands, so he just wastes it in useless scenes that add nothing to the plot. The scenario is poorly designed. Each time there's an advancement in the scenario, it comes out of nowhere. Also, some cliffhangers at end of episodes are totally artificial and don't really matter. A full disappointment.
If you've ever watched and enjoyed classical "Whodunnit" movies/series like Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple, don't think you'll find here something of the same quality, because it is not. The director/scenarist has been stupid enough to never include clues for the audience. So you can simply never guess anything. Therefore you're just speculating and frustrated. Really it's a shame.
The only positive point is that Nicole Kidman is stunning in this series.
Sense8: Obligate Mutualisms (2017)
Outstanding opus of humanism
Fantastic end. Mozart's requiem in D Minor (K626) always adds flavor. Love the cultural references instilled in Sense8 episodes. The Wachowskis make each episode a unique peace of art, linked to the others in an intriguing, deep and n-dimensional canvas.
Also, there's a "bigger picture" that can be fathomed when watching Sense8 through a comparative lens with the Watchowskis' other movies, esp. Matrix and Cloud Atlas. Recurring themes show a genuine ambition of the Directors to convey a message :
1. The leitmotiv of the benevolent underdogs fighting an almighty and obscure Big Brother (BPO in Sense8).
2. The somewhat federation/unity of humanity, beyond and independently of races, countries, religions, sexes or even economical motivation (e.g. : Capheus with Amondi Kabaka)
3. The courage it takes to fall 100 times and to rise 101. The fact that although life is absurd and often full of cruelties, one can build his own meaning, making life an aesthetic magnum opus, if and only if one keeps the ability of amazement in front of the beauty of the universe (e.g. : Capheus' history and kindheartedness, epitomized in the speech and conversation scenes in this episode)
Conclusion : I'm eager to watch the next episodes, yet I want to be patient, because each one requires time and focus in order to be not consumed, but fully reveled in.
