Who Is Erin Carter? (2023)
A Thrilling but Flawed Mystery
'Who Is Erin Carter?' is a British thriller series that follows the life of Erin Carter (Evin Ahmad), a British teacher living in Spain with her husband Jordi (Sean Teale) and daughter Harper (Indica Watson). When she gets involved in a supermarket robbery and kills one of the robbers, her past comes back to haunt her and she has to fight to clear her name and protect her family. The series has a promising premise and a talented cast, but it suffers from some illogical plot twists and dragged-out scenes that take away from the gripping drama it tries to be.
The series starts off strong, with a tense and action-packed first episode that introduces us to Erin and her mysterious background. We learn that she is not who she claims to be, and that she has a connection to a criminal organization led by Lena Campbell (Denise Gough), who wants her dead. Erin also has to deal with a persistent detective, Emilio Martin (Pep Ambròs), who suspects her of being involved in the robbery and other crimes. The series keeps us hooked with flashbacks that reveal Erin's past and how she ended up in Spain, as well as twists and turns that put her and her family in danger.
However, as the series progresses, it starts to lose its momentum and credibility. Some of the plot developments are hard to swallow, such as Erin's husband being oblivious to her lies for so long, or Erin being able to fight off multiple armed men with ease. Some of the characters are also underdeveloped, such as Olivia Thorne (Susannah Fielding), Erin's friend and colleague who has a secret agenda of her own, or Penelope Reyna (Charlotte Vega), a journalist who gets involved in the case. The series also drags on at times, with some episodes feeling like filler or repetition. The final episode tries to wrap up everything in a satisfying way, but it feels rushed and contrived.
Who Is Erin Carter? Is not a bad series, but it is not a great one either. It has its good moments, such as the performances of Evin Ahmad and Denise Gough, who bring depth and intensity to their roles, or the scenic locations of Barcelona and Palomino, where the series is set. It also has some thrilling scenes that keep us on the edge of our seats, such as the supermarket shootout or the car chase. However, it also has its flaws, such as the illogical and dragged-out plot, or the lack of character development. Overall, it is a good watch for fans of action thrillers, but not the best you would see in this genre.
Fair Play (2023)
Gripping Corporate Drama
Fair Play is a gripping and entertaining drama that explores the dark side of the corporate world. The movie follows the rise of a young and ambitious woman, Emily Meyers, played by Phoebe Dynevor, who has whatever it takes to succeed in her career. She works as a financial analyst at the cutthroat hedge fund One Crest Capital, where she is secretly engaged to her fiancé Luke Edmunds, played by Alden Ehrenreich, and there is cutthroat competition with other colleagues for the best investments and promotions. The movie shows the challenges and conflicts that Emily faces as she tries to balance her personal and professional life, and the consequences of her actions.
The movie has a fresh and original look at the corporate drama genre, as it does not rely on clichés or stereotypes. The movie shows the complex and nuanced characters, who have their own motivations and flaws. The movie also has some surprising twists and turns, that keep the audience engaged and curious. The ending is satisfying and unexpected, as it does not follow the usual formula of either a happy or a tragic ending.
The lead actress, Phoebe Dynevor, delivers a stunning performance. She portrays Emily's emotions and struggles with authenticity and intensity. She makes the audience sympathize with her character, even when she does some questionable things. The actor, Alden Ehrenreich, also does a great job as Luke. He shows the charisma and charm of his character, as well as his vulnerability and insecurity. He has a good chemistry with Dynevor, which makes their relationship believable and compelling.
The movie also features Eddie Marsan as Campbell, the ruthless boss of One Crest Capital, who puts pressure on Emily and Luke to perform well. Rich Sommer plays Paul, another financial analyst who is Emily's rival and nemesis. Sebastian de Souza plays Rory, Emily's friend and confidant who works at another hedge fund.
Fair Play is a movie that will keep you hooked from start to finish. It is a well-written and well-directed drama, that offers a new perspective on the corporate world. It is a movie that will make you think and feel, as well as entertain you. If you are looking for a movie that has drama, romance, suspense, and realism, then Fair Play is the movie for you.
Nowhere (2023)
A Gripping Survival Drama
Nowhere tells the story of Mia, a young pregnant woman who escapes from a war-torn country by hiding in a shipping container aboard a cargo ship. However, her plan goes wrong when a storm causes the container to fall into the sea, leaving her alone and trapped with limited resources and a baby on the way. The movie follows her struggle to survive and find a way out of her nightmare.
The movie is a thrilling and emotional drama that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The movie is set in a dystopian future, where Spain has become a dictatorship that plans to eradicate children, pregnant women, and elderly people to deal with the lack of resources. The movie shows the harsh reality of refugees who risk their lives to flee from oppression and violence. The movie also explores the themes of hope, resilience, and motherhood.
The movie is carried by the brilliant performance of Anna Castillo, who plays Mia. Castillo delivers a powerful and realistic portrayal of a woman who faces unimaginable challenges and dangers. She conveys the fear, pain, desperation, and determination of her character with authenticity and intensity. She makes you care for her and root for her throughout the movie.
The movie also features Tamar Novas as Nico, Mia's husband who tries to reunite with her. The supporting cast does a good job of adding depth and tension to the story.
Albert Pintó, the director of the movie creates a claustrophobic and suspenseful atmosphere with his camera work and editing. The movie uses minimal dialogue and relies on visual storytelling to convey the plot and emotions. The movie has some impressive scenes of action and survival, such as Mia learning to catch fishes, delivering her baby, and escaping from the container.
The movie is not without its flaws, however. The movie has some logical inconsistencies and unrealistic moments that might bother some viewers. For example, how did Mia manage to stay alive for so long in the container without food, water, or medical attention? How did she communicate without any device or signal? How did she not get infected or bleed to death after giving birth? How did she find land after being lost at sea for so long?
These questions might seem nitpicky, but they do affect the credibility and plausibility of the story. However, I was able to overlook these flaws in the light of some amazingly written scenes and satisfying ending. The movie has some moments that will make you cry, cheer, and gasp. The movie also has a twist that will surprise you and make you rethink everything you saw before. The movie ends on a hopeful note that will leave you feeling inspired and moved.
Nowhere is a great survival drama that will keep you hooked from start to finish. It is a movie that will make you think about the issues of our world and the courage of our humanity. It is a movie that will make you appreciate life and love more than ever. It is a movie that you should not miss.
Chhorii (2021)
Worst acting and direction
I don't know how this movie got a rating of above 1 because it is so badly executed that you lose interest in first 15 minutes. The plotline is so cliché and the performances are so forced - not even a single character looks genuine. Rajasthani dialect is nothing close to what it really is, and the storyline makes absolutely no sense. In guise of a social message, this film is neither entertaining nor scary. It was a stupid nightmare. Don't waste your time!
Pariksha Pe Charcha (2021)
An illiterate old man talking about exams.
The man who never faced questions in a press conference is giving advice on how to deal with exams. With idiotic suggestions like "attempt difficult questions first", the show depicts the low IQ of a narcissistic PM chosen by Indian citizens. Watch it for a good laugh.
