Revenge for Jolly! (2012)
Fun, interesting and funny
I really enjoyed this movie.
The plot is darkly funny, with elements of Kill Bill and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but all with an absurdist twist.
The main characters are both strangely believable, in amongst all the insanity of the plot. Their emotional connection is plausible and well done.
Cartoon violence is interspersed with some relatively poignant and deep dialogue. If you have seen Llewyn Davis then one side of the dialogue will seem vaguely familiar - the same actor brings his brooding, terse delivery to this movie with good effect.
Overall, I would definitely recommend watching this. Ideally late at night after a few drinks for authenticity...
Haywire (2011)
Very little worth seeing here
I've given the film 2 out of 10, because it does work as a coherent work of fiction. The characters move their mouths and words come out. They press buttons on phones and other people are at the other end and then 'plot' happens. In addition, they swing their arms and legs and people get beaten up. It gets 1 further point for having Michael Fassbender in it.
Other than that, it really is just terrible. The lead actor (who I now understand is an 'MMA' professional) is awful. She can't act, and even the action scenes - which should be her strength - are quite woodenly acted, in my opinion. The chase scenes are horrific- in one instance, she does the 'look back around a corner to see if being followed' thing but it's just all very amateur dramatics. Embarrassing to watch, in all honesty.
The supporting cast are big stars, but horribly underused. Antonio is miscast, and you could easily not realise it's him at all. Why did they bother to pay his salary? I could have played his role just as well, being as he's only in a couple of scenes, and I would've done it for fifty quid and a bag of sweets.
Ewan Mcgregor was actually quite good, but again not properly used. Fassbender doesn't appear to be able to act badly, and again he is brilliant. Very nuanced, menacing, but ultimately killed off in what seemed like an entirely pointless and cold blooded shooting (he was incapacitated anyway, but I guess the wafer-thin plot required a death or whatever. Who really cares at this point...).
The boring and predictable plot eventually 'climaxes' in a series of pedestrian confrontations with predictable results. The pointless and unimaginative revenge fighting proceedings reminded me a bit of the Mortal Kombat movie franchise.
Yeah, exactly...
