The Menu (2022)
Makes you think, doesn't it?
I don't like a message spoonfed. And this movie doesn't. But it has a message, or at least it flexes a message. Nobody likes critics? Sure, but that guy cheats on his wife, which is bad. And those guys inflate prices -here's my 100 dollar tiny steak. And this billionaire bought me an Island, forcing me to become a renowned chef, the audacity. Can't just go back to flipping burgers, as millions do. Why not?
Ok, so maybe the chef is a hypocrite? Maybe we are supposed to reject his message? Well, clearly, he kills people. But he kills insufferable snobs. So the message is don't blame the insufferable snobs? But then.. do kill the escort? Maybe with a doggy bagged hamburger of too-old beef that causes sepsis? Thereby defeating the 'point'? You decide?
If you can't put forward a coherent message, then there's no need for the characters to become meek sheep to the slaughter. They seem to have forgotten about acting in the final scene. Life seemed to hold so little value, that the stakes dropped to zero. Why should we care, if they don't care?
Why would you put so much effort in creating a fancy concept targeted at overanalyzing consumers, if you can't stand criticism. Especially when you'd be happier flipping burgers/blockbusters.
Master of None (2015)
Season 3; Beautiful
Aziz Ansari is in it! Only for two episodes, but he makes room for a beautiful story. Incredible acting. Observational realism. I loved it.
What Just Happened (2008)
A Movie about the Beard of Bruce Willis and the Dog of Sean Penn
Trying to figure out why this movie got a bad rating...
Well I guess it doesn't do bad for a art-house film (is it an art-house film anyway? Here in The Netherlands it is...) As far as the subject matter goes, well, yeah, maybe you're not the type that likes an absurd story line. But this movie is really hilarious! Robert De Niro produces this movie with himself as the main character, a character who tries to produce a movie. That in itself is kind of funny. But Robert De Niro is not the reason to go see this movie. We all know he can act, he's great and all, but you have to see this movie because of the crazy absurd and funny story. This is a movie about the Beard of Bruce Willis and Sean Penn's Dog.
Bruce Willis is playing an obnoxious very annoying person named Bruce Willis, who will not shave his beard for a movie! Come on! That's funny! And a stubborn director (hello Michael Wincott, nice to see you again, great character you play!) of a movie with Sean Penn, wants to kill off a dog in the movie, but everyone tries to change his mind because of a really bad screening. Should a director change his movie to become a Hollywood standard middle-of-the-road movie, or stand by his principles. That sound like moralistic unfunny seriousness, but in this movie it's played out so funny. I loved it.
This movie is reflexive of how Hollywood seems to work and that is what makes "What just happened" a great movie. Loads of praise!
Lost: The Constant (2008)
I wish we constantly had episodes like 'the Constant'
I've watched it for the second time. The same feeling came over me when I watched it the first time. It's just such a great episode. I've followed ER, x-files, millennium, Dawsons Creek (even), Gilmore Girls, Buffy, Friends, even stuck to Ally McBeal for a while, but never has there been one episode that has even come close to 'the constant'. Lost will never get boring, because the concept of the show will never get old. They'll never seem to run out of mind-blowing story lines, and even all the little sidetracks are interesting. There has never been a show like lost.
But with this episode they've made it possible to stand above EVERYTHING else that we've seen before. Daniel Faraday made me watch Saving Private Ryan for the 30th time, and I was kinda amused I guess, but it was nothing compared to 'the constant'!! I guess that if I write more, I would only come to the conclusion that I can't to this episode justice with words, so I stand up in my room and give it an applause! GREAT JOB!!!
