Poker Face (2023– )

Something's Off

There's so much to love about this show. The variety of stories and the great cast makes it really enjoyable.

The production values are excellent. The scripts are clever and I'm loving seeing actors I've enjoyed in other things on this format.

My only struggle with it is Natasha Lyonne. She's a super likeable person and seems to be a decent actress, however I have my doubt she can play any other character besides the same one she had in Orange Is The New Black and Russian Doll.

Each story setup flows well and then she arrives on the scene and I feel myself get really uncomfortable, like when an annoying relative arrives and you forgot they were coming.

It won't stop me watching, but it lowers my rating.

Artfully made. Frightening brilliant
25 October 2022
So much goes into making a great horror movie. As much as people complain about jump-scares they have a purpose, which is to create physical tension within you. Smile manages through artful camera angles and moves to create a mental twist as your eyes follow where you are taken through windows to upside down landscapes to create physical tension within you then slaps you in the face with a jump scare.

Sound effects and repetitive noises are used which are reminiscent of those used in such movies as The Shining.

Bacon carries this movie. Her emotions are palpable.

Being a big horror fan it's rare for me to hide my face behind my fingers, but this movies had me doing it.

The measure of a good horror to me is whether or not I want to see it again, do I want to own a copy because the way it is made is artfully creative and did it scare the hell out of me. The answer for this movie is YES!

It's like It Follows and The Ring had a baby and it came out SMILE-ing!

I don't get all the love!?!
25 October 2022
I never watch trailers for movies. I'll read the brief synopsis but that's as far as I go. I'm a huge horror fan and am fascinated by what terrors peoples minds can conjure.

I really like the pace and the 'drama-like' presentation of the beginning of this movie. Wondering where it was going was part of the enjoyment. I'd watched 'Smile' the night before so I was welcoming not being thrust into sheer terror within the first ten minutes.

The movie revealed itself, new characters and a frightening creature and I went along with it. There were typically frightening things like long dark corridors and creepy stuff but little of it scared me.

The measure of a good horror to me is whether or not I want to see it again, do I want to own a copy because the way it is made is artfully creative and did it scare the hell out of me. The answer for this movie is No!

Isolation Feels
5 October 2022
The premise of this movie is rather simple and it's a premise we've seen before. What sets this apart is in it's execution.

We watch the main character introduced to her new life with her partner in Romania. She doesn't speak the language, but he does (his mother was Romanian). Doing her best to learn the language she finds herself lost in conversations around her and removes herself from situations where she has the inability to join in. The viewer is put in the same predicament as she because subtitles are not included and we too know that what is translated/interpreted is far less than what was said.

We can feel her isolation. So when English is used in the movie we feel closer to whomever is speaking and more included.

Some have said this movie moves too slowly. To me, it's perfectly paced because in isolation time moves slow.

The climax is the payoff!

Like, I kinda, like, like it
27 June 2022
Except for all the like, 'Like' being said like every second word, it's like really, like annoying. But if you can, like, put up with it, it's kinda like fun and like, dumb!

Simplicity and Realness
26 June 2022
A remarkable film about aging, self perception, vulnerability, redemption, abandonment and a little bit of sex. When millions are thrown at big Hollywood movies and they fail miserable in their execution (I'm looking at you Jurassic WD), this movie is succeeds on many levels. Loved it!

Tell me ...
19 June 2022
Tell me a movie is a Netflix movie by not telling me it's a Netflix movie. Soulless, dull, lazy, dumb, indoctrinating, smug, pretentious... Looking good with a with a decent soundtrack doesn't redeem this at all.

Here for Sissy and JK
22 May 2022
I was bored by the slow storyline, but Sissy and JK made this their show. Other cast members were strong, except Kiah McKirnan who can't muster a tear when it's appropriate to see that sort of fragility. Sissy and JK are brilliant and true!

Soft Core P*rn
2 May 2022
This is hilarious! Slo-mo teamed with a soundtrack to get you in the mood, exotic locations and beautiful people ...and somewhere in it there's a story that you kinda forget about after the 5 to 10 minutes of all of the above. Other than having beautiful things to look at there's not much more to it other than softcore p*rn. I'm no prude but these are very cheap thrills.

Eye rolling!
10 January 2022
I'm gay and this is so cringy. We all have our 'coming out' story. This is so pious, virtuous and self serving. I lost EVERYTHING when I came out: friends... family.

I have never fallen into the victim mentality nor get to the entitled attitude that this show depicts. I see zero struggle here, because it's so staged.

I wish Colton well, but something tells me he's doing REALLY well! 😆

Culture Gulp
10 January 2022
Compared with western dating shows, especially ones based at beaches this was sooooo different. The western ones are loud and trashy, which makes them hugely fun and cringy. This show is such a reveal of the difference in cultures. From the way the people interact to what is acceptable to talk about, such as skin colour, face shape and a preference for single or double eyelids. Amazing insight. Not much happens in this show, and if you're looking for crazy entertainment, this isn't it. In many ways it's rather beautiful.

One more thing! These young folk can cook! With basic ingredients, they whip up many a meal that looks amazing.

Super biased
28 December 2021
Incredibly biased. So obvious. The Afghanistan section was stomach churning. The most egregious foreign policy act of the Biden administration is reduced to pitifully not funny drivel. Yes, good comedy can come from tragedy, but this just isn't clever nor funny.

*sigh*

Struggled through this one. I LOVE Janelle Monae's music and she's an ok actor. I could hardly stand the scenes with her loud mouth best friend who was basically just rude and unlikable. Makes watching these things tedious.

No presumptions
20 October 2021
This movie doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is; fun and goofy. Switch your brain of and enjoy it. John Cena and Meredith Hagner steal the show. Cena's body is crazy big!!

Enjoyable to a point
5 October 2021
Entertaining enough. The main character is super annoying. The end (explanation) is plain weak and goes ridiculously against human nature, therefore it weakens the premise of the 'games'.

Pretty Well Done
30 September 2021
A lot of new stuff on Netflix is pretty pathetic. I love horror so figured I'd have a look. The main character has a good back story and stuff that happens along the way makes this more than a slasher film. It creates some real compassion for her. The last scenes are impressive. I tend not to listen to reviewers who have 'read the book' because they don't get that the language of film is different to that of literature (pretty much what Peter Jackson said of LOTR and look at the success of that). Horror is like comedy; it's subjective. Have a look, you might enjoy it.

Inside No. 9: The 12 Days of Christine (2015)

There's a reason...
18 August 2021
There's a reason this episode is the highest rated of all Inside No.9 episode. Although a few complain that the idea isn't original, it's the execution of this that makes it so loved.

The emotional roller coaster of the main character, the comedy that pops up and the horror that has you reeling. The combination of those throws you into confusion and then in a moment of stillness the truth is revealed.

I've watched this many times over and I cry each time. Watch it with an open heart. This is a masterpiece of television!

Pacing is off
9 August 2021
Great performances all round, but there's something off with the pacing and it seems too slow. I watched the documentary series and despite its flaws of too much blurry screen, it is a more enjoyable expression of the story.

Paris' breaking voice like a pubescent boy!
7 August 2021
Paris forgets which voice she's using! A forty year old infantilising herself with a cutesy voice ... then goes deep so she sounds like her voice is breaking. She looks like a drag queen! The show is kinda fun if you're into watching a vacuous talentless idiot mince around around a kitchen in heels. Btw Demi Lovato is gross!!

Ignore the low I.Q ratings!
18 July 2021
This movie surprised me. It is FAR FAR better than some of the predictable, trite and prosaic rubbish that big studios like Netflix, Prime and Hollywood ones throw millions at. It is intelligent and surprising. Has some creepy and upsetting moments and the ending was as I was expecting (based on a conversation that was had earlier in the movie).

Avoid this one. Written to not offend anyone, which makes for an illogical and false narrative. Despite the great cast this was a waste of time!

Prosaic
11 February 2021
Lots of potential for a deep and wide subject, but it's really a prosaic very pedestrian perspective of what soul mates are. Plus the shaky-cam is atrociously overused.

Spinning the Circle of Life with a heavy hand!
9 August 2020
I love watching animal related shows because I love to learn something new. There's zero information and the whole thing looks and feels staged. I'm not sure who they think the audience is. It seems extremely irresponsible to have a massive lack of respect for animals by exploiting life and death like this for entertainment. The 'circle of life' does NOT need heavy handed selfish humans spinning the wheel!
