Gunpowder Milkshake (2021)
A different lead would have saved it
This could have been a great girl-power, fun action adventure but oh my god Karen Gillan is so horrifically bad at acting you can't barely focus on anything else! Look, if she's super professional and great on set just give the girl an acting class. I mean it's truly remarkable that she got this role- she is outshined by literally every other actor including the extras playing the thugs. I can't believe the other huge names in this movie had to "support" her "performance" but I hope another bug plot isn't wasted on someone who can't hold up the part! So many people could have nailed this part and turned this into a lil summer romp but OKAY KAREN.
False Positive (2021)
First Hulu original movie I finished with enthusiasm
A surprisingly good thriller with an even more surprising performance by Ilana. (Undoubtedly the reviews will be flooded by... well, you already know.) I especially enjoyed the subtle hints of surrealism in the costumes and music. There are subtleties that I enjoyed from the set as well (having them order sushi for her at lunch) and the entire time and dynamic really supports the script. The movie never takes itself too seriously all while keeping you focused on the plot. Would definitely recommend this to friends and can't wait to see what this writing and directing duo have next.
Lovecraft Country (2020)
Another enthralling premiere
I haven't been this excited since the first episode of Watchmen. Not sure where to start, the colors, the acting, the wardrobe, the writing, the directing! A fantastic and absolutely thrilling episode that leave you wanting more of everything. Everyone who was a part of this production should be so proud of this beautiful show they have made. I am so looking forward to the rest of the season!
Charmed (2018)
If you don't like it, maybe it wasn't made for you
This is such a wonderful YA supernatural show. The actresses all have wonderful chemistry and treat every episode with integrity and seriousness even in the face of some goofy challenges!
This show is extremely uplifting, for young women especially- having open discussions about sex positivity, consent, feminism, family, and love. These women are portrayed as being beautiful, smart, witty, and STRONG. This show is a nice contrast to shows like Originals or The Order that pale in comparison to the strengths of these characters. I truly hope that this show continues, since the way these characters are portrayed is very important. Girls who watch other shows can also see smart, powerful women who lift each other up and support each other. This show is diverse, and with a monster of the week hook, I can't understand where the complaints come from... these ladies stand up for themselves. If you don't like the show, maybe you should understand that you aren't the target audience! This show is a great reflection of what the world looks like today. Capable women of color in STEM and leadership positions, all in the scope of a fun and exciting show about witches!
Billions: Beg, Bribe, Bully (2020)
Weird to see it become so unrealistic
Totally lost me with him giving the speech at school. Suddenly this show is betraying the world of values and morals it's established and becoming completely unrealistic. Sad to see the shift in the writing.
Saturday Night Live: JJ Watt/Luke Combs (2020)
Could barely make it through the episode
This season has its highs and lows like any other, but this episode in particular was so unbearably bad. I could barely make it through the frozen sketch, and I didn't even imagine it could go downhill from there. Unfortunately the hosts charisma couldn't make up for his complete lack of comic timing. Too bad he didn't get any help from the writers!
Servant: Jericho (2020)
Best episode of the season
Had me on the edge of my seat the entire episode. What an amazing culmination of events
