Hancock (2008)
Very unique superhero movie, wish more were like it
Hancock is the story of a man who is a superhero physically but human mentally. This isn't like most superhero movies, there isn't a ton of action, there is no supervillain, and the the protagonist isn't perfect. The protagonist deals with alcoholism, clumsiness, is disrespectful, and has anger management issues for most of this film. The film centers around Hancock's public image. The city residents of LA hate Hancock for the damage caused by his actions even though he saves many people. The difficulties faced by the protagonist are what many could imagine would be the difficulties of a real life superhero rather than a comic book hero. Because of this, despite the story being about a man with super-powers. The story still feels very realistic and relatable to the audience. Many have complained about the plot twist (no spoilers) and said that it disrupted the plot too much. I don't really agree with that though as I found the plot twist to still be remaining in the context. It certainly changes some things but I didn't get the feeling that the movie was ruined because of it. If however, you don't like a movie with a lot of grey morality characters, this movie is not for you since that's basically what the whole plot line is about. If you do however, then this movie is perfect and you will love it. I would definitely recommend this movie to anybody who asked me.
Mac & Devin Go to High School (2012)
Boring if your not high
Before the movie started the audience are told to smoke some weed because you supposedly can't watch the film without being high. Well let's just say I don't have the best access to it so I watched sober. The movie is probably right. I thought the movie was quite boring and the relief being that it was very short and had Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa in it. The movie is sort of like watching weed porn in a lot of ways. Since half of the movie is showing Wiz and Snoop or their friends getting high in all the different ways. The plot does not have a lot of substance to it and ultimately this movie probably is only for when your high. If your not high, you probably shouldn't watch it. There are some moments that are pretty funny though even if your not high which broke some of the disinterest. I didn't think this movie was terrible, but it wasn't good either for me personally.
I Am Britney Jean (2013)
An interesting look at one of the most famous pop stars of all time
Being a Britney Spears fan, I couldn't turn down the opportunity to watch this documentary when I heard of it. This is one of the remaining indicators to people around the world that Britney Spears is still very famous and successful. She has clearly fully recovered from her 2007 meltdown and is preparing one of her biggest performances.
This documentary mainly focuses on some off-stage interviews concerning Britney Spears personality, home life, as well as focusing on the production and preparation of the Piece of Me tour. It's very interesting to get more of an inside look of Britney's life and to watch exactly how concert tours are begun. I actually had no clue how concerts were really set up before I saw this documentary. Or how artists make each concert it's own unique experience. There was a lot more preparation than I really thought there was before I saw this documentary.
My only complaint is that I think the documentary was slightly dragged out, and it felt towards the end like they were running out of ideas for the last 15 minutes of the documentary. It's very entertaining in the beginning to watch the relaxed side of Britney as she jokes around with colleagues and discusses ideas for the concert. Of course, if you've seen her interviews you know Britney Spears is a pretty light- hearted person and she still succeeds in making you laugh several times.
Ultimately I think fellow Britney Spears fans will enjoy this documentary. If your not a Britney fan you should understand that this documentary is meant for a certain audience and it might be best not to watch.
Spring Breakers (2012)
Watching this film was like spending 94 minutes in hell
If I ever wondered what someone could use as a torture device against me, I think I have found the answer. 1 out of ten isn't enough for this movie to describe how dreadful it was. First things first, this film was marketed as a comedy. Not one scene in the entire movie was funny, I never chuckled once. If anything this movie about killed my sense of humor for awhile. This movie doesn't even try to be funny, constant slow scenes with sad voices are not funny. The girls aren't even very hot almost all of them are sub par and this film presents the sexier scenes in an odd sort of way that isn't sexy at all.
So the film first starts off with a bunch of girls robbing a store because they don't have enough money. Which makes you think, how terrible must these girls be at planning, like anything. If all 4 of them had worked at McDonalds for just 2 months, they'd have over 1,000 dollars. Yet all they could find was 320, makes no sense. So of course this conveniently explains why 4 rich college girls are ruthlessly robbing a store (how often does this happen) and needlessly bashing everything that looks like glass with sledgehammers.
So then we finally get to the actual spring break, and for the next 30 minutes you will watch mostly the exact same scenes play out in front of you as you've already seen. At some point the film director arbitrarily decides that he doesn't want to make a movie about college partying, and instead decides he wants to make a gangster film. Now you'll watch as the movie glorifies guns and violence for the remaining duration of the film (meanwhile none of this has anything to do with spring break).
As a Britney Spears fan I also have to add my opinion about the scene with the song Every time. I felt very insulted to see Britney Spears and her song defiled by this movie showing constant scenes of people beating each other up, shooting each other, and generally just toting guns around like they were toys all while her song was playing.
If you are a Selena Gomez fan then I really recommend you stay away from this film. Firstly, because she isn't even in half of it. Secondly, because the movie is mainly about her friends doing bad things and while she stays out of it her friends basically become the focus of the film. Lastly because Selena Gomez herself said her fans shouldn't watch the movie.
But it isn't just Selena Gomez fans who shouldn't watch the film. No one should watch this film, it becomes unbearable to watch towards the end and succeeds in insulting almost every member of the human race. Personally this movie was everything I despised and I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.
Last Action Hero (1993)
Very entertaining
This is essentially a movie that parodies action films. Last Action Hero does a much better job at it though than some parodies do at spoofing their genre. It was very entertaining and interesting to see all the action movie clichés, and their contrast to the real world. Although the supposed real world has some of those same clichés.
(spoilers start here) For example the main villain (Benedict) is searching through movie theaters to find all the movie villains and basically take over the world. The second protagonist (Jack Slater) is trying to find him by wandering around the city looking for movie theaters for hours. The kid of course tells him that things just don't work that way in the real world because the real world stinks. Almost as soon as he says that though he conveniently spots Benedict exiting a movie theater (spoilers end here).
Back to the main part of the movie though. Last Action Hero has a unique approach to the comedy of this film. Most of the comedy is not done through jokes but through showing all the movie clichés. An animated cat in the police station for example and nobody seeming to mind at all. Or when the police chief is yelling at Slater and showing literal steam coming out of his ears. This is a fun film that isn't meant to be taken seriously but is still very entertaining for action and comedy fans alike.
The Dictator (2012)
Get your grandma out the door and be prepared for non-stop laughter
The Dictator has sweet crude humor and social satire galore. I literally couldn't stop laughing throughout this film it was so funny. All the self- juicing jokes were probably the best. I loved watching everyone's reactions to the protagonists crude jokes and blatant sexual references. The Dictator also points to a lot of flaws in both American society and Muslim society. The end speech is a good example of how both societies are criticized.
I can't really say more without spoiling the movie but trust me if you like crude humor and political humor you will love this film. If you do not like this kind of humor though you really shouldn't watch this movie because there is a lot of it.
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992)
Most of the movie was good, but the action scene was horrifying and sadistic
I will say that most of this movie was funny and that gives it a better rating. The problem is that the action scene was extremely disturbing. One reviewer said this is for 15 year olds, but I'm 15 and I hated the violence in this movie. This is supposed to be a family film but instead it turns into a pg rated torture flick with Kevin throwing 5 bricks at a guys face from a 4 story building. The same guy getting electrocuted and them showing a highly disturbing scene of him getting vaporized with skeleton showing. A man with his hat on fire and his head blowing up in a toilet full of kerosene. To top it all off the kid sets fire to a rope and watches the criminals fall from a 4 story building with their feet on fire. Film makers please stop showing torture and cruelty as something casual to laugh at. That whole half hour was too sadistic and brutal to be in a pg rated film.
Fortunately though the rest of the movie makes up for this horrible and prolonged torture fest. The jokes in the rest of the movie are hilarious and had me cracking up. When the hotel guys were getting fooled by the audio track from that movie was one of the funniest scenes I've seen in a movie. The movie had many other moments that had me laughing and liking the movie. Unfortunately though the action part of the film was so horrifyingly brutal it makes it hard to recommend this movie. Perhaps best to just skip the brick and electrocution scenes, but still enjoy the rest of the movie.
The Birth of a Nation (1915)
It embarrasses me to even say that I saw this dreadful film
This is one of the longest, most boring, and most dull movie I have ever seen. Everything in this film is way longer than it needed to be. The first 25 minutes are completely unnecessary and it was like the director was blind during the directing of the movie. How could one not see that the same scenes were used over and over again and added absolutely nothing to the story. I cannot even say how many times I must have zoned out or pleaded for this soul crushingly dull film to be over. I believe that you must watch the whole film to give a fair opinion, but this one really tested the limits of my philosophy.
As I've said before this film is unbelievably long, 3 hours to be exact. 3 hours when it should have been 2 hours tops. Each scene takes an excruciating amount of time to watch. Such as the ten minute long battle of Gettysburg. Or the 10 minute long watch these soldiers march out of town. Or the first 25 minutes of the film basically being people walking around.
It disgusts me that this film has a 6.9 rating currently on IMDb. This is the most racist film ever created and alongside that it is boring. Birth of a Nation has many plot holes, the music is completely out of touch with on-screen events, and it's very clearly propaganda for the Ku Klux Klan.
This movie is good to know about for historical context. Do not watch it though. This skull numbingly boring film is not worth your time.
I, Robot (2004)
Good but not masterpiece material
I robot is a film that plays on the audiences future fears of a cybernetic revolution. The film also contains philosophical elements to it that question the viewer on whether it is better for robots to be emotional or logical. Both views are given from an unbiased point. Another thing about this movie is that it's not just a terminator remake, while terminator focuses more on action and plot. I robot is more of a make you think kind of film. I enjoyed the potential discussion that arises from this however, if you are simply looking for an action movie than Terminator is probably a better choice.
While I like this film for first time watches or to watch 3 or 4 years later. This film is not the kind of film that will make you want to watch it many times over. Another flaw is on Sonny's development as a character. While Spooner and Calvin are developed well, Sonny only uses select emotions and only uses emotions in particular instances rather than throughout the film. This makes him too similar to other robots and doesn't distinguish him enough from the rest.
Overall the film is pretty good, but keep in mind that it's not a masterpiece that will appeal to everyone.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013)
Visually amazing, and follows book well, but feels like the first one.
One of the things that first leaped out to me about this movie is it's stunning visuals. The beautiful shots of capitol and the game landscape are amazing. Capitol is sort of like a mix between Las Vegas and Los Angeles with many bright lights with loads of celebrity like influence. Catching Fire also gives you a good connection to the characters. During one moment in the movie, I was rubbing my neck and cringing at how painful certain parts felt.
One problem with Catching Fire as a book though is that it feels too similar to the first book. Catching Fire seems in many ways like the first movie shot in different ways with slight plot changes and this makes you feel like the author used this book to milk the franchise rather than actually have more substance. While this is reviewing the book rather than the movie, I feel this is important because one good thing about the movie is how well it does follow the book. Those are however, the original creator's faults and the director has no control over that.
As a book this particular story has issues, but in my mind the director and screen writer did their best with this movie and it turned out great.
