Qissa: The Tale of a Lonely Ghost (2013)
A Psychological Interpretation of the Mahabharata
Anup Singh's "Qissa" is one of those movies which are not meant for the mass but for a specific set of people who are well-aware of the theories of symbolism, sociology and above all, psychology. The plot is a direct interpretation of King Dhrupad's story from the Mahabharata blended with Freud's theory of Id, Ego and Subconscious.
Speaking of acting, Irrfan Khan is just brilliant again, Tillotama Shome is flawless. Tisca Chopra is perfect and Rasika Dugal is stunning.
Anup Singh and Madhuja Mukherjee's screenplay is the best gift we get from the movie.
The background score by Beatrice Thiriet and Manish J Tipu goes along with the slow pace of the movie but not very apt considering the Punjabi background of the movie. But the songs are brilliant, got a flavor of Lohri and the Punjabi Tappas.
I couldn't relate the landscape. Punjab hasn't got that much of hilly terrains.
Cinematography by Sebastian Edschmid is simply superb.
We need more movies like this even considering the fact that it's not for the commercial sector of the industry. Movies like this are essential to understand cinema and it's theories. It is a pride that Nandan, Kolkata has got a screening of this feature.
Mishawr Rawhoshyo (2013)
The Average Egyptian Mystery
'Mishawr Rawhashyo' lacks the proper use of camera. The basics of camera movement have been violated here and there which can be easily pointed out by anyone from the field of film studies. The choice of cast is a mess, some being excellent, some being a total disaster. Story lacks the compactness. And music is incredibly brilliant, might be one of the all time bests in a Bengali movie. Prosenjit Chatterjee is at his best. The political touch to the plot was completely unnecessary. At times the movie goes past high above the boundaries of excellence while at times it goes well below mediocrity. With a mixture of good and bad, it can be declared to be an average movie.
War Chod Na Yaar (2013)
A Brilliant Attempt
"War Chod Na Yaar" is a movie that will not appeal to the mass. It is a movie for the class. Amazing cinematography, sarcastic plot, sheer use of humor, good makeup and Dilip Taahil's excellent acting takes it to the top. The music is very average and fails to make an impression. The transparency of media and the role of politicians have been portrayed appropriately in the movie. It is not simply a movie, it is a message to mankind. Though extremely Utopian, the movie shows how love and friendship can topple war. The use of puns has been very accurate. Actors are at their best. However, the army of the neighboring country has been portrayed in a manner that is often insulting. It is indeed a huge discredit. But overall, the movie successfully impresses the viewers and makes a mark. Still it is not a movie for the mass, but for the class only.
