Brings the heroes of the ice alive
13 January 2010
I went to this movie not expecting too much and having read a review that only gave it two of five stars. Thus I was pleasantly surprised to see what a good movie Steven de Jong made of the events took place on this day in 1963 when 10.000 people started an ice-skating tour that only 69 of the tourskaters would bring to an end. The story brings four people together that have different reasons for taking part in the tour. The stories are nicely brought together. We also get a good feel of how harsh this tour was. The cinematography is on a high level and the music is great. Also good to see that a main part is spoken in Frisian as this event takes place in Friesland. I would recommend this to anyone who like to see a realistic fight for survival on the ice that brings people together in such a way that only the 11-cities tour can.

Awful

If you boys really like violence and base your max ratings on that (and the other fun stuff like half nude girls whoohoo! :( ) you're really sad. This movie only derives it's coolness from that and the way it was shot, but offers nothing else that a good movie is made of, like atmosphere, good characters that you can relate to and a good story that drags you into it and keeps you interested. If you like some gory stuff -and i like it too if brought well- you'd better go see "Saw" cause it's much more cleverly made and it has a great story with twists that are meaningful.

Unfortunately i'll have to write a longer review for this movie which is kinda impossible, cause there's nothing more to add. It's really sorry to see Bruce Willis took this role. He must have been a huge comic fan. The character he's playing is a sorry excuse for a brave cop that amazingly stays alive like so many others in this movie after having been shot and mutilated over and over again. Then there's also the stereotypical view towards women and the catholic church and a couple of Nazi symbols that make no sense but were probably based on the comic as well. If there's a comic i'd like to see a movie of it would be one like XIII or Thorgal or any other good (european) comic with a good background story and solid characters. Till then i've had enough of this crap. I also wonder if it's getting normal to split movies in half, just like they did with Kill Bill, cause it makes me even feel more like having wasted some of my precious money..

Don't believe the hype; go see for yourself!

I didn't know what to expect having read the con's and pro's in the user comment section. The con's however seem to break it down to the same points: star wars sucks; weird aliens suck, star wars acting sucks... Well I'll tell you that if you go see this movie yourself you won't be disappointed. It's a very solid movie that has everything a movie needs. It takes you to a different world that seems very real and tells a story that is brought to the screen so well that it touches you deeply. If you don't like this movie you're probably a fanatic yourself. In my opinion (and having seen the original movies afterwards again as well) this is the best Star Wars movie and it deserves a rating over 8.0!
