The Hound of the Baskervilles (2002)
Overlooked gem
This is perhaps the 28 Days Later/Trainspotting version of the novel showing Holmes and Watson as almost psychotics, shooting heroine, nearly breaking necks with their canes. Richard Grant's scene stealing is challenged by the leads and altogether mix well for great entertainment. Far different from the Hammar version. I was impressed by the direction, acting, story, dialog but not the 'hound'. It was a sort of puppet then bad cgi, but it didn't ruin it for me. It may not match the novel and I can only assume it was to throw some curve balls. Watch it, be your own judge. I saw it as a different take on the duo. Watson isn't the bumbled Oliver Hardy he is in most adaptations and Holmes is ravenous.
Glass Jaw (1991)
Inspiring and haunting
This film is humorous, ghostlike, and hypnotic. Made of the recalled fischer-price pixelvision camera in the early 90's. You may have caught it late at night on PBS or screened at an underground festival.
It's maybe one of the most powerful and neglected short films made. Michael tell an intimate journal-like tale of being beaten, unconscious, recovery and much needed medical reform.
The imagery is real, some abstract, and very stylish. The narration pours out effortlessly and is flawlessly edited together. All the voices are the filmmaker.
I remember being in love with the soundtrack and knowing i'll never obtain a CD. I really hope they re-release pixelvision film comps so others can enjoy beautiful films like this.
Angel Baby (1995)
Best Unexloited film
Some films pull on your heart strings. This one rips them out. One of the most endearing and powerful films that stays in obscurity. If you like heavy romantic films with intense soundtracks and don't want to leave your movie-going experience the same - take a roller-coaster ride with this sometimes funny, sometimes hopeful and unrelentingly heartbreaking work of art. From it's comical beginning it's prepares you for something along the lines of Shaun of the Dead or Monty Python, lifts you up with laughter. You become drunk. Stupid drunk. Then the bottom drops.
Powerful and flawless
