Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
An Enjoyable Adventure with Flaws
"Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" is back! And let me tell you, it's a solid addition to the iconic series. Now, it may not be as mind-blowing as the classics, but it's definitely an improvement over that divisive "Crystal Skulls" mess.
If you're a fan looking for a nostalgia fix, this movie's got your back...sort of. There are a few scenes that'll make you smile and reminisce, but they're over too quickly! I mean, come on, give us more of those throwback moments! Nevertheless, they do manage to mix in some new stuff to keep things fresh.
Now, I gotta be honest, the story feels a bit weak. It's like they forgot to give it that oomph we expect from Indiana Jones. And don't get me started on the characters-they're as underdeveloped as soggy popcorn. We barely get a chance to care about anyone beyond our man, Indiana Jones himself.
But hey, let's talk about the man himself, Harrison Ford. He's still got it, folks! Ford nails it once again, bringing that trademark charm and wit that made Indy so darn lovable in the first place. He's the heart and soul of this film, no doubt about it.
Speaking of fun, this is definitely a popcorn flick through and through. The action is thrilling, the set pieces are eye-popping, and it's got that sense of adventure we all crave. You won't be bored, that's for sure. And that final scene? Nailed it! It's a satisfying end that leaves you hungry for more although we probably won't get it.
"Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" might not reach the pinnacle of the series, but it's a step up from its immediate predecessor. It's got its flaws-weak story, underdeveloped characters-but with Ford's stellar performance and a good dose of excitement, it's an enjoyable ride.
Barbarian (2022)
First act is great....
It's definitely not a 1 or a 10 so anyone who rates it either way is lying but it's somewhere in between. I think it's a bit better than most mainstream horror films (like Smile for example).
The first third of the film is good, intense, and introduces the characters but the moment the "monsters" in the film are revealed it falls apart.
Instead of going down the familiar "Hills Have Eyes" and "The Descent" angle,I would have focused on the human angle and the Fred character being the monster and seeing more of his backstory.
You have to suspend all belief for this film unfortunately. Characters have phones but calls to police aren't made or the 911 operator decides they're "too busy". Same with the cops when they do arrive. Apparently, the "monsters" have inhuman strength and capabilities. Instead of running, characters keep going back to ridiculous situations.
Good attempt but the second and third act in this film should have been redone.
