A Good Movie, But Not For Everyone
20 October 2011
Well, I thought this movie was amazing. I found it as a recommendation on my Netflix and thought I'd give it a try since I love horror/cult classics. Well, it's not exactly a horror movie, at least in the strict sense. But, it is very amusing and different. It's very minimalistic; most of the story takes place with no scenery. It's just Justin and Lo. Lo has quite a way with words. In fact, I found the dialog witty and at times unexpectedly deep despite its obvious humor. The musical numbers are hilarious. I also really enjoyed the concept of viewing your relationship from the outside, because reality may be very different from your perceptions. Anyway, great low budget movie. I can't see it being a film that everyone will see, but it's definitely a great movie for a quirky audience.

Surprising
1 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
The creators of this movie must have sat down one day and said, "What would you do if your lips were sown to your friend's butt and you had to eat their poop?" We may have all questioned something odd like that, but they took it to a whole new level.

I'm not really sure how to rate this movie. When I first heard of it, my thoughts were along the lines of, "Eeew, gross, why would anyone make a movie about that?" Then, I'll admit, my morbid curiosity got the best of me. So, tonight, I braved up, and sat down to watch it.

On one side, the movie is gruesome, shocking, disgusting, and creepy. On the other hand, the movie is gruesome, shocking, disgusting, and creepy. These characteristics, you see, are both good and bad. By the end of the movie, I felt horrified, partially because I saw the movie, and partially because part of me liked it. While the subject matter is something I would never have thought of, the movie was done fairly well, as in, standard modern horror film good, which to be honest isn't that good except to a small niche of people, but regardless...The movie would not have worked, however, without the ultimate creepiness--the doctor himself. His demeanor, prowess, and mysteriousness somehow makes it all complete.

So, would I recommend this movie? Maybe. If you are a fan of shocking, visually graphic horror movies like the Saw series or some of the foreign horror movies along the same lines, this is probably a good bet for you. But, if you get sick just watching old-school horror, please skip this movie.

Babies: A Sociocultural Documentary
8 May 2010
I just got back from seeing Babies (Bebes) at my local movie theater. It examines the first year of four babies' lives in four diverse nations. There was no narration, which was a blessing, and nothing was translated. Thus, it was a true look at these babies' lives without any apparent biases, mistranslations, etc. I felt like I was back in my sociocultural ethnography class in college learning to view without judging and learn from each group. I would have liked more cohesion or purpose and the film may have been better if it had had a culminating milestone for each child at the end, but what was there was very good.

If you can appreciate other cultures for what they are and go in without judgment, this is a documentary for you. It also has extreme elements of cuteness, so if you want the "aww" factor, this may be a good movie for you. Unfortunately quite a few viewers in my audience were close minded and had a hard time viewing the film without making comments about what they viewed as poor parenting, so that is something to watch for if you go to see it in the theater.

A Beautiful Masterpiece for People Willing to Pay Attention and Think
19 September 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I first saw the short this movie was based on a year ago and thought, this is a truly moving and unique story. When I heard it would become a full-length feature, I was thrilled. Finally, I was able to see it and can honestly say the movie did not disappoint.

The animation in this movie is amazing. It's something you don't see too often with CGI and often I got lost in the visuals. The team of creators took the original short's plot, visuals, and concepts, and expanded them into a story that more people could appreciate.

The story and characters were unique in their own ways. The plot was one that makes you think and question what life would be like if there were no humans left. Imagine a scientist trying to solve his mistakes by creating a fragment of humanity to survive even if human beings could not. Take that story, and see it play out as he tries to save humanity yet again, this time as 9 fragmented personalities. And that, in itself, is what makes the story unique. The characters themselves are not terribly deep, but this makes sense because they are fragments that, to maintain what little humanity is left, have to band together.

The key to this movie is that you have to pay attention and you have to go into the theater ready to think. Watch the short first. If it appeals to you, go see the movie. I won't say the movie is for everyone because not everyone likes to think or pay attention to what is really being said and done, but if you are that type you will appreciate it. That having been said, this is not a movie for young children. Just because it is CGI does not mean it's a child's story. It's a post apocalyptic world. And no, there are no cute fuzzies to be felt in this film. Just the utter despair of 9 beings trying to survive the best as they can in a world run by machines trying to vanquish humanity.

The only downside to this movie, in my opinion, was the dialog. The movie could have held itself without words like the original short. But then, I guess even more people would be complaining and not willing to see it.
