Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw (2019)
A self aware fast and furious
I got to see an early preview on Tuesday night which was cool. I have seen all the fast and furious movies and although I understand the appeal and like the characters I felt like the movies became increasingly ridiculous with the writing as time progressed.
While I think most people can probably agree with me on that point, my bigger issue was the over serious tone in conjunction with the movies. It is as if everyone in them is in denial that the stories were becoming increasingly ridiculous.
This movie however takes a different approach. I think Dwayne and Jason get the appeal and ran with it while subtly acknowledging and making light of the over the top nature of the story. This is possibly my favorite entry, even though I do like the first few movies in the series and would like to see if they could apply this tone to the main series if it continues in any way.
One final thought, if you like the pg-13 Deadpool 2 "once upon a Deadpool", and like fast and furious then you are gonna love this one. I won't say anymore than that but I think you will see what I mean. Make sure to stay for the credits scene too.
The 13th Warrior (1999)
Highly underrated epic
This is one my favorites, if not my favorite movie of all time. Not having read the book (Eaters of the Dead) I cannot comment on how well it follows the book. I do know the author (Michael Crichton)also enjoyed it however.
I find that this movie is by far an away the coolest if not best personification of viking warriors that I have seen. For the uninformed the movie/book loosely follow the story of Beowulf from the eyes of an outsider. Each and every actor fills their role so perfectly for me that I become lost in the story each and every time I re watch it.
I should also note this is probably my favorite Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack. Of the many epic movies hes scored, the music in this movie lifts my spirits every time.
I am eagerly anticipating a blu-ray release for this most epic of adventures!
Gentlemen Broncos (2009)
Instant cult classic
So, I completely understand why people do not like this movie. It can be gross, confusing, and just plain stupid at times. With that said, it is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Jemaine Clement and Sam Rockwell fell into the roles of some of the funniest characters I have ever seen. There are some lines when both in and out of context made me laugh so hard I cried.
This movie is not for everyone, I think people who like both napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre will find some enjoyment out of this(which I don't). More importantly, I think people looking for some sci-fi fantasy literature satire will get a kick out of this, because both the dialog with the "Authors" and all the excerpts from the two books had my laughing out loud constantly.
