A Haunting in Venice (2023)
Clue, Knives Out Snore Fest
We watch the trailer. Looked like an exciting, thrilling and a creepy ghost movie. This movie is soooo boring. It drowns the audience in (Supposedly fun banter) and misdirection. This book by Agatha C had been turned into a Hollywood trope movie. Hollywood loves taking the quirkiness script of the old clue movie and trying to reinvent it in different ways...they are running out of ideas. Tina Fey oddly cast in this (love her in most other things). Not sure if it was supposed to be funny, even at least in parts. But alas, we did not even giggle. If you're looking for a good thriller, suspense movie...not this. If you're having trouble falling asleep at night, skip the sleep meds, put this straight to streaming mess on.
The Silent Sea (2021)
When Writers Make Characters Do (or not do)
I got to about the 4th episode and couldn't handle "smart" characters doing stupid things. I tried, I really tried but the writing makes this a slog to get through each episode.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
I had to check to see if the writer wasn't actually Kristen Wiig.
I wanted to like this movie. I actually really liked the first one (except for the ending). The first hour was like watching a date movie, literally watching two people on a long date. THE FIRST WHOLE HOUR. Then the clowns playing opposite Wonder Woman...This was the first blockbuster superhero movie I ever saw where the competing force against the hero was either a total idiot or a character with shallow social issues. Also, Wonder Woman suddenly can make things disappear and fly like superman? This script was worse than amateur hour. 2 stars because the scene when Diana was a kid was done really well.
Antebellum (2020)
Quite Simply, the trailer was everything.
I really wanted to like this movie. The premise could have actually worked, had it been well executed. The acting...bad. The obvious symbolism...not thought provoking. The stupid decisions by characters...frustrating. In the end, I absolutely hated it. 2 stars because, hey, good try.
Hanna: Friend (2019)
2 episodes in and not sure if I can keep going...
Why oh why is there a story line of a family on holidays with absolutely dreadful, bratty and miserable kids. Just move along with HANNA! Isn't that who the show is supposed to be about? Suspense, thriller, action...no. Sleepy drama, trying to be silly...maybe. At least the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have 2 songs in 2 episodes.
Some Freaks (2016)
2 Halves of a Movie
This movie had such strong potential. The first half of the movie had complex, well-written characters. Beautifully acted too. The main characters were charming and yes, they did not fit the status quo and were victims of realistic bullying.
The second half of the movie took those same characters and made you hate them to the point of no return. The male lead even does something totally unforgivable at one point. The acting was the only saving grace.
This movie could have been inspiring. Instead it left me with a feeling of true disappointment.
The Killing (2011)
If you don't mind a lack of creative forethought...
My wife and I were definitely hooked after the first 3 episodes, then it was a matter of just trying to finish the season. We got tired of the ridiculous red herrings. The writers seem to write for an ignorant audience that will accept what ever they throw out there. Characters keeping secrets from people they would otherwise trust, secrets of noble causes...Oh, there's the pink Grand Canyon shirt the mother thought her daughter lost, it so happens it is a popular shirt found in meat lockers...Then the whole episode where she was looking for her son, probably the worst episode I sat through! Last, why do the characters find no use for umbrellas when apparently it rains every day in Seattle (according to the show)? In fact, Holder's hoodie is a sponge, why wear it?
The best shows/ movies have a well thought out script. Sure you may be thrown a red herring or two, but there is always a clue along the way to the actual truth. It seems that there is a different writer for each episode and are given the challenge to magically glue what the last writer wrote then make up a whole new direction to steer the audience. I bet you that the actual killer was not even seen in season 1! The writers are still trying to figure it out themselves!
Better crime drama that is well written...Dexter.
