Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
A true story every American should know brought to the screen beautifully by its actors and director
First of all, I would like to address the reviews that state this film is about pushing "liberal white guilt". It is not, it is a true story with villains who were tried and convicted in the American court system after an investigation led by the conservative head of the FBI, J Edgar Hoover. I highly recommend that everyone reads the nonfiction book of the same title by David Grann prior to watching this film.
I was fortunate to see an advanced screening of this film yesterday at the Zurich Film Festival. Martin Scorsese certainly satisfied the monumental challenge of bringing this story to the cinema. The actors fully possess their tragic and complicated characters, especially Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone (who I hope to see more of). The score, cinematography and featured songs only contributed further.
Despite its length, the rather abrupt but appropriate conclusion left me feeling melancholic to depart this cinematic masterpiece and it has remained in my thoughts for hours since. Please go and watch this film and recommend it to others once you do.
The Reluctant Traveler with Eugene Levy (2023)
Skip this and watch "Idiot Abroad"
I love travel shows and Eugene Levy, so I figured this series would be an easy win for me. Unfortunately it is a big disappointment ...
We are currently dealing with growing global economic disparity and Apple TV chose to show the luxury side of travel only available to the very few. On top of this, they expected us to enjoy watching an old man complain about it while getting paid a handsome salary to do so.
It is out of touch and frustrating to watch ... if you want to see a charming bull in a china shop, watch "Idiot Abroad" instead. This series captures the growth that can come from travel and locations were not selected based upon the Apple boardroom members affordability.
Shrinking (2023)
Everything works except the main character
Jason Segal's character is a very tall goofy man child and I'm not sure why anyone cares about this guy or listens to him as a therapist. He can't manage to be there for his daughter at all despite her needing him more than ever. His teenage daughter is more grown up than he is ... I have a hard time sympathizing with him and he just needs to get his act together.
Otherwise, this show is held up by the fantastic supporting characters. It is so great to see Christa Miller again and her and her husband provides great comedic relief throughout the series. Harrison Ford is always a delight and Jessica Williams absolutely steals every scene she is in.
That '90s Show (2023)
The teens are awful, not funny either
I loved the original That 70's Show and their guest appearances in this series are a delight, otherwise I would give this series a hard pass.
The teens are all awful actors and unlikeable, nothing special about any of them with zero chemistry. It doesn't feel 90's at all ... as someone who actually was a 90's teen, that was a disappointment.
There was no edge to the jokes either, they all seemed forced and entirely too clean. People choking on Raisin Bran? I just found a bag in this bag? A bag bag ... laugh track goes off to make the audience think the jokes are funny, but they aren't.
Feature the original 70's Show cast more, make a recast or higher acting coaches for the teenagers, and bring in new writers ... otherwise this is a big bomb.
