Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
A Treat For Fans, Mediocre For Others
I'm not particularly a fan of Harry Potter, although I understand the over-hype and fever thats hit the young impressionable youths of the world. The movies are always just a little over-rated due to the expectancy of them. Yet regardless of this they remain entertaining with a good contrast of British cast with only a few exceptions (Oldman). I acknowledge Gary Oldman as a good actor for his diversity of roles (Murder In The 1st - 5th Element) and he plays his role very well in this. Daniel Radcliffe is a bit weak in the lead and although it is a role that carries pressure with it hand in hand he does his best. Radcliffe for his age is not a bad actor but not a very good one, the same could be said for his counterparts (Grint and Watson). Although this cannot be overcome the fact the cast is mainly youngsters takes a chip of the overall acting quality as none of them are outstanding, and few satisfactory. The movie is made primarily for youngsters, the dark contrast of Cuaron's directing clashes with this leaving a mixed mood of film. This is not always a bad thing but for something that should be consistent its a disadvantage. Grint adds some comic relief whilst Watson looks good for the young men watching. The Potter films are average in an ever growing fantasy genre but will be forgotten soon after the hype which is catapulting it to such success that the second movie is the third highest grossing. Then again Titanic wasn't the greatest piece of film art, when putting any Harry Potter film next to any Lord of The Rings film it puts into context the sheer mediocrity of the Potter films, only catapulted to such extreme success due to the volatile and fickle interests of a young and naive audience. Overall, entertaining if your into fantasy, average if your not. 6.7/10
Tom Brown's Schooldays (2005)
A Slightly Above Average Drama
This adaptation has been tried and tested on four separate occasions. Right from the outset you could tell this screening of the famous story was sticking to the old traditional set. This was reassuring. Stephen Fry played the Doctor well with the casting of both Flashman and Tom Brown accurate. It was an average performance from Flashman, but a strong performance from the youngster who played Tom. Especially since it was his debut acting role. The story was intended for light entertainment and had no real meaning, therefore I can't scrutinise it for lacking depth. The other roles seemed too minor and the rest of the cast played their part well enough to go unnoticed. The viewers of this will forget it ten minutes after they've seen it but entertaining nonetheless and better than most in this genre.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
A Masterpiece
The third movie is set to be a classic and rightfully so. Being a huge fantasy reader and admirer of the rare Fantasy films we see that are good, I would have took kindly to Lord Of The Rings had it been a mediocre trilogy. It however is not. This movie in particular stands out when thinking of Lord Of The Rings, although slow at the start it quickly speeds up and stays at that pace until the end. The directing was quality and the special effects made it worth watching all on their own. Spectacular. I've never been so impressed with a movie and never so excited to see it.
After The Matrix: Revolutions I thought that this last part may have been a let down and another great trilogy would have been run down at the end. Possibly the hardest film to pull off as a success has done so, and done so with style. It exceeded my expectations with gripping parts and mind blowing battles. The shivers ran right down my back as I was watching.
The movie was not just about hundreds of thousands of warriors going into battle, it had much emotion in it some movies of this type miss. It is not completely accurate as there never has been a movie of this type. We can categorize it and put it into a genre but it stands out on its own. It is by far the best trilogy made with each film just increasing in its glory. The best movie out of the three Lord Of The Ring films. The best fantasy movie ever made. Possibly the best movie ever made. In my opinion it is. I hope it knocks off Titanic and breaks new records. I hope it becomes rated amongst The Godfather and Citizen Kane. It is mind blowing and as once said (on television) 'Everyone on the planet should see this movie'
Truly Awesome
