Coolie No.1 (2020)
Gross
Disgusting movie that is an insult to time and intellect.
Jab Harry Met Sejal (2017)
Two crucial miscalculations made this movie a painful watch
1) Faking an accent: it is the hardest thing for most actors to do, and it's a huge risk to take given the room for error. Yet Anushka allows her character to adorn said fake accent and it was pretty much one of the two most damaging mistakes made in the movie. It was laughable. totally unbelievable, and completely unconvincing. Sejal comes across as inconsistent in her accent and very hard to watch.
2) Classic error of telling and not showing. Having Harry insist that he has a "bad character", having Sejal claim that she wasn't the type of girl to elope, etc, etc... These character details are great opportunities to create telling scenes and situations that demonstrate the personalities. But we're given a ton of scenes that just have Harry and Sejal talking about their own characters trying to one-up each other in an age-old, cliched battle of the sexes. Major cringe. In movies like DDLJ, the innocence of Simran is demonstrated, not shoved down the viewer's throat. Raj's playfulness is made clear from all his shenanigans. SRK can learn a thing or two from when he played Raj.
I used to love SRK but unfortunately he gets in his own way in his recent performances. For an actor of his level, I can't blame him. He's achieved too much and has been revered too much for him to go back to being an ordinary man with an extraordinary talent. He's now an extraordinary man with a talent that just hasn't been able to catch up to him.
The end of the movie, where the deeper emotions surface, is actually very watchable. It saves the movie for a little while. If Anushka kept her regular accent, and the scenes were more demonstrative rather than dialogue-heavy, this movie would have been an enjoyable watch. Predictable, sure. Entertaining? It could have been.
Coffee Shop (2014)
Cliché
If you're looking for a mindless chick flick, this one's for you. Cliché story line where everything fits perfectly into place--a sunset party just HAPPENED to be there during the end of the date and Ben's "betrayal" was just small enough to be overcome by telling insecure Donavan that he loved her. Not engaging and only mildly entertaining only because of good cinematography. I actually forwarded parts of the movie because I could predict the next scenes.
Neat and simple love story--hugely boring.
