Simply Black (2020)
Release it in the USA!
27 April 2021
Sure would like to see this film, but it was only shown briefly on a French Film festival tour. It is now impossible to obtain with English subtitles.

Sappy movie for dullards

Embarrassing to watch. Could have been so much better had they simply not talked down to the audience. Reminded me of the crass movies that come out of Hollywood. I wish that I had that time back. Good actors, lousy direction that will probably have the cast leave this film off their resumes.

Wonderful film, excellent cast. Pity that more people won't ever get a chance to see it

Saw this film aboard a flight (Thanks, Air Canada!) and enjoyed it immensely. Doesn't seem to be available anywhere in the USA in any format or on any streaming platform yet. Seek it out!

Disappointing
26 November 2018
Should have been better. Could have easily been better. Lots of good bits mixed with a heavy-handed 'preaching to the choir' dialogue. I feel embarrassed for Australian film goers.

This film was never released in the North America. I suppose that nobody bought the rights to it here. Just to even view it I had to obtain an illicit copy. Somebody (Netflix? Sundance?) ought to buy the North American broadcast rights.

Nice, but disposable. Skip it if you can!

Never before has computer animation been so great. It is just a darn shame that they didn't spend anything on the writers.

The picture is beautiful; the detail and work is astonishing. Why then, did the story have nothing of interest? This is really quite a shame (and hopefully not an example of what we can expect from Pixar/Disney going forward).

However, adults held captive by their spawn in the theaters will manage to give up a few yucks, but very few. The lacking story is helped along by many wonderful sight-gags, too bad that the writers were plainly absent during the development and production of this movie.

Wait until the DVD.

Norwegians think it's wonderful, everyone else hated it.

Avoid this movie! I saw this film as part of a press screening in San Francisco. At the time of this writing, it had not been released yet in the theaters here. This film will be appreciated by unsophisticated, young, art students with angst and a pack of Gauloise non-filter cigarettes, but not by anyone else, unless they're Norwegian. (Norwegians are so happy to see a film in that language that they temporarily lose their common sense) Beautifully shot and very well acted, this film makes for a frustrating evening spent. The entire audience was muttering as they left the screening. Some were visibly angry for having been suckered into the screening. As it appears to have absolutely flawless accolades everywhere *before release*, it appears that their publicity machine has been working overtime to pump up what is essentially 103 minutes of wasted time. (That actress is quite pretty, by the way. Let's hope that she gets a better script next time)

Straight to Betamax

Great actors doing great acting, great period-correct wardrobe, great period-correct cars. Every detail perfect. Sadly, that is just not enough to make a movie.

There is no "punch" to this flick. You keep waiting for a surprise, any surprise. But no. Nada. Zilch. The story is so predictable it is as though they use "Microsoft Script Wizard" to write it for them.

Also: Pierce Brosnan is miscast in this picture. It's not his fault, but he just doesn't belong here. Doesn't fit, isn't believable. Plus: his haircut is contemporary, not 1949. Nice duds though. Wardrobe did a great job all through this movie.

Do yourself a favor: skip this movie.

Rent any old DVD of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" instead.

And so when do we get it here?
22 January 2007
I just saw this on a plane (and overseas flight) and I watched it twice, as it was so good. The acting was superb, the script very credible. This is perfect art-house cinema or Netflix material. So when do we get it here? Even just on video? (Is this where I whine that pleasant little gems like this go unnoticed by dumb Americans?) Besides, how many Swiss films will you ever see in your entire life? BTW, the piano playing fooled me entirely. I kept looking and trying to figure out how it was done (hence, the dumb American comment). It will be very easy for anyone who is smarter than the average bear to identify with this story.
