Kandahar (2023)
Implausible story, bad directing
A good example of when you have all you need to make a good movie (actors/actresses, props, etc.) but you mess up a mediocre story with bad directing. Nothing in this movie was believable and chronologically reasonable.
Some action sequences were good, but in the context of the story they just didn't make sense.
You'll find characters that you are not sure if they are heros or not, you find buildups that fall apart in a hollow way, you'll find acts of sacrifice that are not believable, and angers and sorrows that don't go with the harmony of the story; kind of feels like a parody of another movie.
Unless you are a hardcore fan of Gerard Butler I can't imagine how you can really enjoy this movie.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
More like a parody than an actual sequel
No vision, no real story, bad acting, excessive flashbacks, so so visual effects and sounds. Save yourselves time, don't even bother to watch it out of curiosity.
Extraction (2020)
Great action film with with impressive performances
This movie has been very engaging from the first minute of it. The plot is complete with an emotional side story, and performances by actors and actresses are very impressive. It certainly delivers within and beyond expectations in the action/drama genre.
Designated Survivor (2016)
Starts out interesting, turns boring after 4 episodes
The show started out very interesting; but as it progresses it feels like writers are just creating unnecessary events to stretch the plot and keep the story going (pretty much like what they did in "Lost", started out well, but it became apparent that the writers are generating random open-ended events that they themselves don't know how to resolve and conclude; and that's a deal breaker for me).
The main character is portrayed quite relatable. Despite being the president he has a full spectrum of intense human emotions (fear, doubt, discomfort, feeling capable/incapable, etc.), but the series of events that are set up to bring out these emotions are somewhat repetitive and they get boring. It got to a point that after watching the first 5 minutes of each episode I could successfully predict the whole thing. I stopped at episode 10 as it felt like a waste of time for me.
The Titan (2018)
On my deathbed I'll look back at my life and would regret spending 1 hour and thirty minutes of my healthy youth days on this piece of junk.
I was quite excited to watch this. Sci-Fi fantasy is my favorite genre. But this was absolutely horrible! Events happened for no reason; characters got happy or angry without explanation! A complete logical disaster. I have watched some movies form the bottom 100 list of IMDB and I really think they were better. If you have no value for your own life and happiness then watch this .. that's all I have to say.
Phantom Thread (2017)
Masterpiece
Actors and actresses were absolutely amazing, the story is twisted, complicated and beautiful and the events are accurate and unexpected. It's truly a masterpiece. Phantom Thread was miles and MILES ahead of Shape of Water IMHO (in all aspects, from story to music and acting) and it was the movie that deserved the best picture and direction. Definitely a must watch.
The Shape of Water (2017)
Good but not a masterpiece
The movie was good and engaging. Visually the creature was good for the most part, his postures and the fingers did look awkward though. My biggest problem was that the events were not convincing; let's say a character changing his mind in the middle of the movie and you are surprised like really?! How? You can't help but feeling that some parts of the story was patched together poorly.
The main character gives a great performance, and the music was good too.
Overall it's a good movie, but not worthy of the best picture.
Tomorrowland (2015)
A great movie!
I think this movie was fantastic. You should know what you are watching and who is the target audience and have the right mindset. For example if you are watching any of the Aliens you are looking for a bit of horror, thrill and some brutality; and if you are watching Avatar you are looking a hardcore mystery and thrill. I think Brad Bird did an amazing job for its target audience. When I watched it I was not expecting brutality, hardcore action or deep mystery, I was expecting good quality soft Sci-Fi. I think it did great to keep me extremely interested throughout the movie and the message of the film and its delivery was beautiful. Talking to and reading the reviews of those who didn't like it, I think they were expecting a Sci-Fi like Aliens, or Terminator which is like eating Coffee and Cookies for lunch! You'll not enjoy it because you have the wrong expectations! It's the problem of the consumer not the product. So the bottom line is, if you are looking for a beautiful soft inspirational Sci-Fi with an amazing direction that you can watch with your kids and teenagers and re-energize the dreamer in you, go for it! :)
I Origins (2014)
Logically insufficient
If you make a movie where a brilliant scientist gradually understands he is wrong about earth being a sphere and realizes it is actually flat, no matter how well you have made that movie, it is a stupid one! This is what we have here!.. For me the peak of the stupidity was this little sentence "What would you do if something spiritual disproved your scientific beliefs" which is equal to the "flat earth" in terms of logical value. If a scientist sees identical iris patterns in two unrelated people he will go and examine the iris development, the environmental factors that affect iris pattern, checks the genetic evidence, the family tree of subjects, etc. He will not walk towards the sunset with teary eyes! The make of the film is actually not that bad ... a nice romantic build up goes on at the first half .. but it gives it's place to plain stupidity at the second half.
Interstellar (2014)
People's lack of knowledge about physics led to a score higher than what it deserves!
The good: - Original story, amazing acts, very good visual effect, amazing score.
The bad: - Starting to mix science and BS at some point; I'm fine with absolute BS (like if you say there is a bubbly fire-farting dragon living on Jupiter, and just leave it at that and start to build the story with that assumption), but I'll have major problems with the story if you start naming valid scientific theories and make BS conclusions to justify the existence of the bubbly dragon with science.
Overall: - A very good movie, but if you have a background of science don't expect a "Flawless" movie. If you want a proper mixture of sci and fi without them stepping on each others toes, go watch The Matrix, or Contact (both 10/10 IMHO).
Divergent (2014)
Now this was really really bad!
I really can't believe this has a rating of 7.1 here on IMDb. You know something is wrong when you can predict everything 5 minutes before they happen! One of the worst loads of BS I've ever seen. It's in the same line of weird teenager-action-love-war stories like Hunger Games and Twilight that has 0 logic in it. The whole idea of factions, the training ground, the fact that the trainer could "kill" the students without consequences, the stupidity of the fact that once they chose their faction the could't never ever change it (WHY?!), the ritual of pouring blood in a bowl while they were choosing their factions (not to say that there were thousands of them and it would have taken them years to finish that stupid ceremony with everyone dramatically taking 5 minutes to drop their blood!), the structure of tests, etc. are some of the many stupid ideas that were presented in this movie. Once movies like V For Vendetta were the futuristic movies that people watched and supported, now it's Hunger Games and this!... really sad... what happened to us?
Son of God (2014)
A true failure!
People often make a mistake about religious movies, they think if they don't give them a good rate it's disrespectful towards the original story and persons in them. It was a bad movie, so what?.. It's not like Jesus himself acted in it! 5.4/10 is really too high for this! Anyhow, this is a miserable failure in copying Mel Gibson's movie "The Passion of The Christ". It tried to tune down the gory scenes a bit and make it somehow not only about the final days of Jesus's life, but his earlier time as well. However not only it was very apparent that they are copying Mel's movie (with all the slow motions during the part where Jesus carries the cross, and scenes' setups, and flash backs, etc.) but they do a poor job of doing that! Scenes start and finish with not enough emphasis (like when peter was upset that he denied Jesus, he just walk around yelled and ran away!) ... or the scene that he actually denied Jesus was absolutely unconvincing (with him just standing aside staring at Jesus and saying "No, I don't know him!"). The extras and soldiers did an extremely poor job by not being in the character fully and just walking around! Finally the special effects and the whole view of the city (which was obviously computer generated) was horrible, looked like it's made of LEGO! The only good thing that I can think of was the actor of Jesus himself which was actually a good pick for the role and did a good job on acting. In summary, poor copy of Mel Gibson's movie, bad acting of the extras, unconvincing scenes, bad special effects, good Jesus actor.
About Time (2013)
Not impressed
The movie is meant to impress you and show you that you already know how to live your life perfectly by living in the moment. However, it fails in the fact that it has so many inconsistencies. On some cases Tim (the main character) absolutely can't travel back in time because it might cause him to have a different baby in the future, so there is a dramatic scene of his last visit with his father and so on; and in the next scene he actually does travel back to his childhood (regardless of his future babies) because he is going to be very careful! so why can't he be "very careful" when he goes back to see his dad again? Or the thing about his dad's cancer; it's really hard for me to accept that someone won't go back in time and fix his smoking issues to avoid cancer in the future, simply because he wants to give up. So why doesn't he go back in time and hire a hit-man to shoot him at a certain age that he sees proper for him to die! Or just simply jump off a cliff! And the thing about money, Tim won't travel back in time to become rich because his grand-uncle did it and money cause everyone to hate him. But that's again stupid, you'd think of a solution to become fairly provided without doing too much work. Also it's an insult to the rich class of people, this means you are all hated by everyone around you! Yes, I know all you 7.9 raters would say "oh, you don't get it .. the movie is not about these childish details .." .. but I see these weak points in the story as lack of ability of the writer. He could come up with another idea to stop Tim from travelling back in time for money (something like it's inhumane, it's like stealing from other people and for example his dad could make him swear that he would never do that .. or something other than a weak reason). I think the main message of the story is beautiful, but it failed in giving me a consistent movie with strong details. Oh, and Rachel McAdams is gorgeous and AMAZING! as always! :)
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Why this many nominations? Absolutely mediocre!
I'll never understand why this movie got nominated for this many awards. It's just as good as any mediocre romance/comedy like Adam Sandler movies and such. All acts were normal (not amazing and certainly not Oscar worthy). Jacki Weaver who was nominated for best supporting actress was (IMHO) awful and did a terrible job; at some points in the theatre I was looking at her and thinking "did I really pay 15 bucks to watch this act?". Anyway, I believe this movie is highly overrated. Seeing that this cheesy movie stood beside amazing movies like Life of Pie, or Lincoln or Argo is an absolute disappointment.
Les Misérables (2012)
Good production, but musicals are so outdated!
Good acting, good costumes, etc. my only problem with this movie was that it was a musical. I find it very hard to drown my self in a story when everyone is singing every single word in their conversation. If it was made like a normal movie it would have been a masterpiece. But musicals are a little ridiculous (IMHO). In a serious scene, having someone singing in the front and a group of people acting as a choir in the back repeating the main persons words is just too ridiculous for me, so I stepped out of the theater. So in summary, everything about this movie was good, but making it as a musical ruined it (again IMHO). I think if someone comes along and make it again as a 2 hour normal movie it will be a huge success.
