3 Body Problem (2024)
Don't believe the hype
As a sci fi fan, I was looking forward to this. I wished I hadn't bothered.
Some of the casting leaves a lot to be desired. Some characters are just not believable, especially Auggie.
The current trend of making female characters say the F word for absolutely no reason, is prevalent here and London is the only place in the UK that seems to exist in the movie world, as usual.
It really does drag most of the time. I found myself tempted to skip an episode or two to find some excitement.
I didn't, worried I would miss some crucial detail, but I wished I had.
Some of the visuals were good, but overall way to slow and boring for my taste.
Each to their own, I guess.
Love & Death (2023)
Very good indeed!
I'd seen trailers for this this and left it a few weeks before deciding to give it a go.
I'm glad I did.
The casting is very good. I don't think there was one character I found annoying, and each actor played their part well. The only thing I did find annoying was Elizabeth Olsen's vocal fry , which clearly wasn't part of life back then.
Putting that aside, Olsen's performance is excellent. I found her very believable in her role, and it was good to see her take up a tougher part.
Jesse Plemoms was great too, a very underrated actor.
The show's style reminds me a lot of Fargo. Quirky.
As with that show, this is also based on true story.
Well worth viewing .
Once Upon a Time in Northern Ireland (2023)
Worth a watch
I very much enjoyed this series.
I remember as a child watching the nightly news reports on the conflict and growing up in England, how we were targets for the IRA.
Many British cities were targeted by the IRA, including my own, in the Birmingham pub bombings.
The participants interviewed provided their view on events in Northern Ireland. Recollections from UDA, IRA, UFF and members of the British army, amongst others, are provided.
I felt their views came across as honest. There are many harrowing recollections of family members murdered by different factions and how they themselves took part in murder and bombings.
It also shows how people can change and how the Irish population were eventually ground down by the whole thing. Thankfully, the peace process was eventually achieved.
The conflict will stay in my memory as a horrible dirty war, with atrocities carried out by all sides, and for what?
The Offering (2022)
Worth watching
I'm a big fan of atmospheric, creepy horror films. I very much enjoyed this one.
I thought the sets were good, although I'm not expert on Jewish culture, so forgive me if I'm wrong on that.
It does make me smile though when movie makers use 20 watt bulbs in houses!
The film was reasonably paced. I thought the characters, except the wimpy son, and his annoying, whispering brother, were interesting.
When the demon did appear, I would have been happier if they had kept it in the shadows as the CGI wasn't brilliant but it was acceptable, I suppose.
The Father was the best character and I would like to have seen more input from the bookshop guy but overall, I enjoyed it. I guess it depends what you like in horror films.
As a big fan of M R James and classic haunting type films, it ticked the boxes for me.
Scare Us (2021)
Pretty good!
I love a good horror, especially short horror stories.
I was a fan of the Creepshow films, back in the day.
I watch a lot of ghost stories at Christmas, so I was in the mood for some horror.
I won't go too much into detail as I wouldn't want to spoil it but each story is a different tale.
I thought the stories were original, quite creepy in parts and the acting was good, for the most part.
I worked out the ending pretty quickly, which was a little disappointing, but I still enjoyed the movie overall.
The CGI wasn't epic but it wasn't that bad either.
I'd probably buy this to add to my horror collection.
