I was excited for this series. The cast is great. The writing is HORRIBLE!!!
As a black American, the amount of forced "black" dialogue in the first scene along was absolutely cringe. When black people get the chance to tell stories, we don't have to ghetto it up for a larger audience. Black people are not a monolith but this show would have you believe that we all say words like lit and catch a case or say Miss Thang Thang...Modern shows like Power and Empire and Bel-Air and Atlanta, The Chi and even Grown-Ish allow for black folk to be all types of black in natural ways. This is high-end coonery. I mean, rose water? Coconut oil? Stop.
I understand wanting to make a show that showcases black excellence but this is an unnatural attempt at pandering and pushing a weird narrative to white audiences. We don't need to prove things to people. Let's make realistic shows unapologetically...
