Ant-Man (2015)
Ton of fun if you don't care about story or acting
I loved the creativity that ant man's power allowed the film to accomplish, and it made it much easier to forgive the heavy reliance on cgi.
I can't forgive the writing or acting. Imagine it all like you would if you were looking at someone smiling who was dead behind the eyes.
Legion: Chapter 1 (2017)
Ambitious with a certain style
It's difficult for me to find flaw with a show like this. There's so much work put into the music, editing, composition, and writing. It is absolutely just nitpicking for me to say I'd much prefer a more realistic style of acting or characters, something more akin to Logan, but that's my personal taste and I don't think that should detract from the series. It seems to be much more of a comic book style from the first episode with cariacatures of people rather than something relatable, but that's fine. I'm looking forward to the next episode, and that's a bigger success than most television can do with the pilot of their creations.
Doctor Foster: Episode #2.5 (2017)
Dr. Foster, as if written by the writers of Scandal
How did we go from the thoughtful, vindictive first season to this mess? The characters have no idea what to say to each other, have no idea why they're staying around, and there is no metaphor. There is just heavy reliance on irrational children, emotionally-guiding music, and the hail Mary of all last ditch efforts to capture the audience... the awkward, camera-directed speech.
The Loch (2017)
Great Actresses and actors maligned with poor, confusing writing
The two female leads are actresses I have happily followed in their other shows like Breaking Bad and Happy Valley.
This show was unfortunately predictable not only with who was ultimately responsible for the killing, but even in the clichés they would use in tiny scenes.
If there is another season of this show I will not watch it.
Oz (1997)
Promising first season, but did the writers abandon ship?
Oz starts off extremely well in the first season. I was almost to the point of convincing my wife to rewatch it with me since I knew I had a few more seasons to go, but I started the second season and was extremely dismayed.
If you're a fan of The Wire, you'll love seeing so many of the actors from that cast on Oz, but you'll miss the intricate plots. After season one, where characters' values actually mean something to them, it seems that the writers got as uncreative as Grey's Anatomy by just having each character question the values that defined his or her character.
There's way too much expositional dialog. So much of the show is recapped through inmates retelling what just happened in unnatural ways. If the plot needs to progress, they don't even bother waiting within a few tin minute blocks. Prisoner A needs to be killed? Prisoner B has a knife under his bed. Prisoner C steals knife; Prisoner A gets killed. That's about as complicated as the plot ever gets after the first season, and they don't at least give the audience the benefit of anticipating the action by letting the plot encompass a few episodes.
Throughout much of the show, I continually ask myself, "So what? What's the significance?" It becomes plot by the numbers with no metaphor.
I watched through half of the third season and just couldn't take it anymore. There are a few actors that still do a good job with the bad writing they are given, but it's not enough to continue.
