Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God (2012)
Is Benedict XVI really resigning because he is Ill?
I just saw this documentary today after hearing about it from my wife, who did not see the whole film. We watched it together. I have never been Catholic, while she had been for a short period while attending an all girls Catholic High School.
What struck me most about the film was the reason that was given for Father Murphy's exit from St John's, for health reasons. Just this morning, Pope Benedict announced he was stepping down for health reasons. It makes me wonder if the release of this documentary had something to do with his decision. If he lives even half as long as Father Murphy did, after he left St John's, it would, in my opinion, give lie to that.
This film needs to be seen by everyone in the world and let them make up their own minds. I do give a lot of credit to the Dubliners that have stopped attending Mass. The documentary stated that they were down to 4% of the Catholics still attending. Good for them!
Puncture (2011)
The movie is too short!
At the end of the movie we learn that way too many hospitals are still not using any similar safety needles of any kind. The movie should have delved into this further.
The closest hospital to where I live is a not-for-profit that is anything but not-for-profit when it comes to its corporate structure. They are constantly building new pavilions, because they have to do something with all the money they have. But, do they have safety needles? No! The last thing they care about is their employees. In fact, if a patient registers a complaint about one of its employees, the patient's word is taken as fact and a bad mark goes into the employee's record immediately. It's all about patient satisfaction at the expense of the employees. This same hospital systematically takes aim at the older employees and seeks out reasons to get rid of them, because the health insurance for the employees is self funded, which means there is no buffer(insurance company) between the employer and the employee. Older people start using the system more.
So, if you run across an employee of the hospital in your area, ask them if the hospital is supplied with safety needles. If they don't, then you are seeing just one of many hospitals that don't give a damn about their employees. If you think they care about you as a patient, don't. They only care about the money they would lose if you go elsewhere.

Too many people didn't get the ultimate twist/plot element...
I only recently saw this film on DirecTV for the first time. I saw it from the middle to the end, the first time around, thought it was interesting and DVR'd it so I could watch it from the beginning. I have since watched it several times. I do not have the DVD so I have not had the opportunity to view any of the commentaries. If this has been laid out there, I am sorry to waste your time here.
I mentioned the movie to a coworker who beamed when I mentioned its name. He had been at a Blockbuster, going out of business and picked up the DVD for $1, not knowing what it was. He said he has watched it at least twenty times, because he shows it to everybody who comes over! I came here to see what others had to say about the movie. I am shocked by how many people criticize the movie for the confusing storyline while Matthew M.'s character lays it out for Doyle.
There were indeed a lot of twists in this movie, most importantly the one where you think the family is just plain crazy and you find out that they indeed had a revelation from God and they were actually destroying demons. Obviously non-believers will have trouble with that aspect. (it's only a movie - it doesn't have to be true) Most of the negative comments on this film seem to arise from supposed holes in the plot and/or elements of the plot that do not make sense. Well, I say that if you watch it one more time with the following thought, that the surviving son had one purpose for telling the story as he did.
***** He wanted to get Doyle into the Rose Garden.*****
Everything he said, whether it made any sense at the time or even later, was designed with that purpose in mind. Even the supposed assistance of his wife makes sense now, when you think about that. Even I didn't realize that premise the first couple times I watched it, so I can't criticize others for not getting it either.
It should all make sense to everyone now.
Big Trouble (2002)
Timing hurt and helped this movie
9/11 delayed the release of this movie, and maybe made the bomb and airport security a bit unfunny, but the eventual release and the digs against Martha Stewart help to revive it! It's hard to believe that this was in the can before her problems with the FTC. Never read the book, although I am a Dave Barry fan. We own the DVD because we love watching it over and over. Perhaps some of the detractors of this film should give it a second look. We definitely got more out of it the second time around!
Jubal (1956)
Just caught this movie on cable and loved it!
If for no other reason watch this movie for its locations. The Grand Tetons are the show stealer here. It makes me want to travel to Wyoming even more than I had wanted to before. The movie is excellent as well, especially if you are a Glenn Ford fan.
