Good Grief (2021)
Laugh out loud funny!
Have not laughed out loud so much at a TV show in years. Every episode there was a "hit pause" after laughing to collect myself. This is a brilliant, original show with great heart and inventiveness. Loved the characters, the cast and their chemistry. There's never been a funeral home with so much life. Beautifully shot and filled with Kiwi humor, Maori culture and actors, and quirkiness. Sisters Eve and Grace Palmer, the stars and writers, are powers to be reckoned with. As a fan of Jonathan Winters' (another comic great) "The Loved One" (1965), here's a lighthearted take, never mind the setting (funeral homes may be off-putting to some, but no worries here). Season 2 just finished here in the U. S. Hope for many more seasons, please! Brava!! Truly one of the best shows of the year we have streamed in 2022.
The Art of Racing in the Rain (2019)
Simply horrendous
I thought I liked the book. Now after watching this horrendous movie I'm questioning why I look like the book. So so so bad.
Denial (2016)
Could have been so much better
A fascinating "case study" and such important material. Liked a great deal of this movie, but I couldn't get over how disappointing Rachel Weisz's performance was. Can she act? Was this acting or was it just poor direction. Substitute Meryl Streep or any other great actress and the movie would have won awards. I've always liked Weisz and was really surprised and will chalk it up to direction. Rest of the cast was excellent and it's a highly memorable film.
Magicians: Life in the Impossible (2016)
There is magic in so many moments
I just finished the documentary and it is a masterwork. Human, touching, and unforgettable. I saw this team's documentary, "Hood the Coast: The Movie" and they have come such a long ways. This film is so expertly crafted and moving.
The magicians each are such wonderful, compelling stories. With beautiful tricks (how did they do that?) and such passion and dedication to their craft. OK, and I'm not a magic (or mime) guy! When it all comes down, we are humans on this brief, planetary existence. Here are people dedicated to their craft, entertaining people and leaving us all asking, "How did they do that?" (Including these two filmmakers.)
Magicians should be nominated for an Academy Award. Don't miss! (Truly great.)
