Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
Not funny, but the music was good
Will Ferrell is pretty hit or miss in comedies and this was right in between. The jokes are pretty weak, but the songs alone made this watchable. Being not familiar with Eurovision, it was very interesting to learn about it as I watched. While there are some laughs for sure, the accents throughout are impossible to ignore. Both Will and Rachel would jump from Icelandic, to German, to Swedish, to sometimes just plain American accent. I enjoyed the story, but the corrupt city official subplot trying to randomly kill Will Ferrell in the end was completely unnecessary and added nothing. Which was followed up by a ghost warning him about the official, only for Will to say "oh we are good, I already killed him". As far as the music every song is catchy, and I've already got JaJa Ding Dong stuck in my families heads by playing it ad nauseam. I would definitely recommend this, it's a fun time all things considered.
1917 (2019)
Beautifully shot but missed the mark
Like all reviewers have said, yes the film is shot beautifully. The cinematography is at times breathtaking, specifically the town being lit by flares as our protagonist runs from gunfire. Beyond this, there isn't much to care about. First one of the two protagonists is killed off screen in the absolute dumbest way possible. The next hour have zero battles beyond the occasional running away from gunfire from stormtroopers apparently who can't hit anything. Our hero fires ONE shot the ENTIRE MOVIE. No exaggeration. The final half of the movie he doesn't even have a gun. So after the two hour run time of walking and dialogue, all building up to this hopefully climatic moment where he delivers the message and saves the battalion, the commander tells our hero to "f off"....like what!? That's what we built up to? The film then wraps up with a pretty pointless informing the one brother his other brother is dead, where he is told "thanks. Now go grab some food" and roll credits. God what a missed opportunity at a movie about WW1.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)
Lost the spark of what Jumanji is
The original film was like a first foray into horror films for children. It was at times frightening, with the creepy idea that you could be sucked into a board game and have to survive in a merciless jungle until someone sets you free. Much like the original Jurassic Park, it perfectly balanced fantasy and horror with a bit of comedy peppered in to alleviate some of the more tense moments. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle throws all of that out the window, and turns it into a cartoony, campy comedy film. While the film does have laughs and can be entertaining at times, it's just a shame to see such a fun idea turn into a joke with no consequence or terror to anything happening to the characters. While it may seem nitpicky to say, it just has no heart. The original was fraught with sadness for Alan as he returns from the horrifying jungle to find his parents died pouring their life savings into finding their son. I don't want to see the Rock flexing every other minute while Kevin Hart quips in between for an entire film. This film is a Jumanji film by name only.
I Am Chris Farley (2015)
Wonderfully done, but other reviews seem to miss the point
Moving from beginning to end. I grew up watching SNL and Farley's films, and this documentary truly moved me. Other reviewers criticisms of this film seem to mainly be that his addictions and death did not get the time it deserves is silly to me and misses the point entirely. Just because it is a documentary, does not mean that it needs to be half positive and half the negatives to balance things out. This was made as a love letter to the man that touched so many of our lives in his short time on this earth and nothing more. It is said best towards the end of the film, that Chris was always hard on himself and never really saw what we all saw in him. This film seemingly is trying to say to Chris today, you WERE that amazing, and genuine, and hilarious, and here is how WE all saw you since you could never see it yourself. To add more about his death and dark moments would take away from this primary goal, and turn it into more of a tragedy than the celebration it was meant as. Great work, great documentary, and a great comedian lost too soon.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
What "brilliant" movie did you all watch??
Not sure what movie the other reviewers watched, but wow, that was the worst film I have sat through in a loooong time. Not a laugh in the hour 40 run time. And yes, I totally got the underlying message of our addiction to material things blah blah blah. It wasn't subtle in the slightest. This was essentially an entire movie with the dialogue and pacing of how the neighbors stand in front of the house in King of the Hill. Not deep, not funny, not anything really.
