Late for Dinner (1991)
This is a simple, perfect, NEW type of Love Story.
It's simple... but it's full of complex human emotion. What if? Consider a couple, caught in events beyond their control, separated by time (29 years to be exact), and reunited. Can true love withstand that kind of test? With the aid of the love of a brother and sister, and the unbreakable bond of father and daughter, and a few extra twists thrown in... well, almost anything is possible.
Our family considers this one of the few, unblemished perfect stories. I just don't understand why they've never seen fit to release it on DVD, as our VHS copy is starting to wear awfully thin. However... what a joy to share this with friends that have never seen it. The reaction is always the same... "How is it I've never heard of this?"
Oddly enough, this really is a science fiction. But that's just a minor plot device (fun though!) to help ask the questions about true love, family, friendship, honesty, devotion... oh it's just a goldmine of warm fuzzies.
If this movie needs an evangelist to carry it's message... I'll happily volunteer. See it... and love it like we do.
Cupid (1998)
Everyone that ever saw it, loved it.
Sure, Jeremy Piven can be a loose cannon, but so is the character. The chemistry with Paula Marshall was absolutely undeniable. And the few stories that they delivered were so warm, and so fulfilling, that it was if a source of wisdom was dangled in front of a willing audience, only to be smeared out of existence with the onslaught of reality television.
This show had such a perfect balance of symmetry between the reality and fantasy that it was so easy to get lost and actually feel for a change. It was okay that you never knew for sure if the character was real or insane, because it dealt so beautifully with the results of a kind heart amongst the miasma of cold psychology and a hardened society. Who better to demonstrate that love is also painful than the god of love himself, and the tortured life he led as a human being, forced to endure the reality of mortal limitations, while still believing in the reality of immortal love? Why take that away when we need to have that kind of hope? BRING IT BACK!! IT CAN STILL WORK!
Angus (1995)
An excellent view of geekdom...
If you've ever been on the receiving end of being the geek in class you can relate to the story of Angus... and if you've ever been the "fat" kid in school, this story is about you. ANGUS is an excellent film with sensitive issues that relate to the outcast group of us that felt we were the odd individuals everyone hated. And yet, it turned out that we were the majority, and the minority that were popular held rule over us. We now know that we had the power to rebel, but too late to take advantage of our skills and too late to requiet that love that we felt was beyond our grasp. "Angus" takes the chances that we never did, and excels in the courage that we never realized we had. Open your mind, free your soul, and live that dream you had when you were young... be Angus for a day and you'll never again feel you were looked down upon. You will realize that now... you're the one "they" look back upon. Be proud, be different, be "Angus".
