Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
Genuinely good
Rarely do I give movies 9 stars, and rarely do I think watching a movie is actual "fun". But this was, without any hesitation, great and literal fun. There are some logical flaws which will appear during the viewing, nonetheless the animation is impeccable and how the story goes is also great. Recommendation without hesitation.
On a side node: This is how you make poc people being represented well. Not randomly switching skin colors, but making great characters of their own. At this point Morales is literally edging on the popularity of Peter Parker. Just make cool characters!
If you're unsure; Watch it.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022)
Unfortunately a mess.
I'll make it short: Cyberpunk as a genre, as well as the game itself, are set in a dark and gritty world: But what we have here is a colourful and almost happy world full with upbeat characters and looney tunes physics. Yes it is gory, yes it has nudity, but no, this is not how a medium becomes mature!
In addition, some shown modifications aren't just enhancements, but pure magic! This whole anime felt more like an Isekai then a western story. And talking about plot: I hope you like it with gaps and holes, because there is sure enough of it.
Some of the action was over the top though, and the style by itself was also pretty good; Add some references to the game and we have a solid anime. But because there never was a "Cyberpunk" vibe in it, I cannot argue that it was a ten.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
A children's movie
This had potential: Actually a lot of it. A plenty good cast, the right tone of being "retro fun" and not taking itself too seriously, yet it pretty much failed. If I were a kid, I'd probably like it, because it has quite some moments children would enjoy; Yet the fact some monsters are quite literally slashed in half makes me wonder if they would be allowed to watch it.
One of the weakest entries in the MCU, sadly. And that's not even talking about the wokeness; Did you ever wonder how the rock-people reproduce? Doesn't matter, they will tell you. It has absolutely nothing to do with the story, it really is just "sprinkled" into it. Why? I don't know. If it at least would've been wholesome, but it was just weird.
Without Remorse (2021)
Very bland, very cheap, very predictable
If this is your first movie ever, you may enjoy it. If it is not your first movie, it'll probably bore you. We have establishing shots of a super happy family, some guy being really edgy and villainy to our protagonist, and some supportive higher-up who has his back. This is enough information to predict every twist the whole movie has to offer.
But ok - it is an actionflick, who cares about story if it's fun? Well, it isn't that either. There was maybe one somewhat satisfying action scene, with everything else being downright ridiculous; A man comes down the stairs half dying, getting shot by half a dozen stormtroopers (which all miss), while he fires his rifle out of his hip, taking them out one after another. It felt like you watch someone play Call of Duty on easy from a third person: Boring!
Acting was pivoting between poor and alright, so no rescue there either.
If you want some solid Tom Clancy thrill and action, go watch two episodes of Jack Ryan, because this movie ain't it.
Free Guy (2021)
Very funny with a lot of cheese in it
First half was just pure joy, second half got some reeeally cheesy parts poured into it. There was so much stereotypical, foreseeable characters and events, that it did worsen the movie as a whole: But nonetheless it was still a very good watch, and only to recommend.
Kyaroru & Chûzudei (2019)
Cute anime with flaws
It's a cute little anime which does entertain overall, but is nowhere near perfect. Most of the music and singing felt somewhat "flat" (any random deadmau5 song is more of a banger than what the "best DJ on Mars" produces), and of course Netflix had to jam in a big spoon of wokeness an lgbt stuff into it as well.
If you have a subscription and you're bored its watchable; Don't bother otherwise.
Loki (2021)
It is an enjoyable ride, but the agenda is distracting
I make it short: The show is enjoyable overall, acting is good and the story is interesting. There are some pacing issues though, as well as some ridiculous problems of "power levels" regarding the protagonists and elements already established in the MCU before.
Talking about those "power levels", some are just weird story wise and don't make sense to me, while others are blatantly unnecessary wokeness; If you enjoy seeing men getting handled more or less every time if they fight with a woman, and every single dude being either directly or ultimately controlled by a women, then you're in for a treat.
This is not a rant on women not being capable of XYZ, but Marvel pushing this down my throat. Therefore 6 instead of 7/10.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Solid action
They did deliver
*Very solid action
*Acceptable use of time travel story-wise
*Less acceptable questions and logic problems regarding time travel
*Below average acting
*"Nice" and scary aliens
*Too much cheesiness
and, most importantly
*A lot of thrill
*A lot of fun
Despite the problems it was well worth it, and the movie really feels like a blockbuster.
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run (2020)
Sometimes funny, sometimes cringy
I think the whole movie would be suited better being a 100% animation flick, without any real assets and people involved: Some parts felt really cringy and unnecessary. Overall a standard (08/15) animation movie to watch once, to be adequately entertained and never look back.
Harley Quinn (2019)
A great watch from start to end
It is just plain fun: Great humor, satisfying action, achieving character development. If the series would end on season 2 it would be a shame on one side, but a blessing on the other. They just nailed the ending.
Also I'm often displeased with "mary sueing" female characters, and adding LGBT content just for keks and giggles, worsening the whole script. Not even *once* you will feel any kind of forced progressiveness in this series: It does have some major topics around women being in charge and LGBT stuff, but it all comes naturally, and you don't actually think about it, until you do outside of it.
Just a great watch for a more adult audience, strong recommendation.
Coherence (2013)
Most weird vote
Not joking: I just saw the movie for the first time and went to IMDb to give it a 7, just to see that I already voted 7. Surely a coincidence, but gave me the biggest moment considering it happening with this movie.
And it's great! The ending could be handled a little bit better, but still a thrilling watch.
The Runner (2015)
No bashing intended
I like Nic Cage. Not really as an actor, but I just enjoy seeing him in movies and in general they are pretty enjoyable.
But this.
This is just a cheap rip-off of House of Cards with a horrible, horrible story. The protagonist is a mix of Peter Russo and Frank Underwood, trying to convince us we have a charismatic, mighty person in front of us like Underwood, while attempting to give him the emotional level and the development of Russo.
And this is just horrible.
Cage just isn't capable of transmitting this level of emotion to the viewer (first scene where he cried we started to laugh - literally), as the writer isn't capable of delivering any kind of believable plot and character decisions.
So I just say it like it is: Even though I like Cage, this movie is not good. I would neither recommend buying, nor watching it. You'll waste your time.
Sicario (2015)
Can't understand the hype
The film is without doubt solid, but I can't understand how it's getting a 7,7 rating.
I don't even want to write a long review because it's all there: The shots are great, the action believable and realistic, without being too heavy on gore or violence, and tension is also build up very good so you never get bored.
But the absolutely weak character of Kate (protagonist) just takes it completely away. Don't get me wrong, Emily Blunt did great, but the character design leaves you thinking till the last second how the freak she accomplished being one of the "tough" ones at the FBI, and even more how the heck somebody sane could put her in the situation she ends up in the film.
This is just incongruent and frustrating, accompanied by a plot twist in the end which was (imo) very predictable.
TLDR:
A well crafted movie with great film style and good acting, lacking in character design and an unpredictable plot twist.
