Why Stop Now? (2012)
Why Stop Now!! Because it's not funny, entertaining and, there are better things to waste your time on
I have to say that after watching this movie I was shocked to see Jesse, whom I would like to believe has a well-endowed acting talent and now a career, would do this kind of script, again. I mean, if anyone, has seen 30 minutes or less, both the movies are similar in more ways than one. A normal guy who is pulled into criminal frenzy, tries to cope up but always finds time to tell the girl that he loves her. I mean in both films, the progress and character development goes just at the same pace, but 30 minutes was way too fun with proper script and punch lines. Because it's funny the first time, but unappealing, rather painful the second time.
The story has a happy ending running on a straight line with high predictability. The acting of Melissa Leo, Jesse and Tracy actually salvaged the film from shrinking to the bottom of IMDb ranking database.
My verdict, if you've seen the trailer, then that's it. It's the whole movie, nothing new is going to happen in 1 hour, 25 minutes.
A History of Violence (2005)
Some Skeletons in the closets are hard to hide!! <-- Movie theme .... Great Entertainer!!
"History of Violence" is one film which I would really recommend you to engross yourself into and not just watch it. The violence , crime , emotions and love-making all at its extreme to say the least. Although at certain point of time it seems that the scenes of Gore had been unnecessarily put too many times into it. The director David Cronenberg, in order to put a clear picture of the prowess our protagonist had with guns and fighting techniques was visible since the very first scene at the restaurant. No need to prove it again and again with a new set of villains. This was never supposed to be an action flick.
But on the other hand looking from a positive perspective, the word "History" by showing only the present wouldn't have been highlighted or revisited if it wasn't for these scenes.
Viggo Mortensen, our Aragorn (and forever will be, I'm afraid) has yet again proved his mettle with the kind of emotions portrayed through this character. A soft gentle father with a killer secret hidden deep within his heart to a protecting selfless one ready to forsake his future to save the family.I actually saw this movie after watching his "The Road" which I thought was not made for his stature. He sets yet another milestone, a shining achievement, giving us yet another role to remember him for.
So final words " Sit it through with apt attention , quirky criticisms on acting, sets , dialogs aside (which in itself would be hard to find) and you shall not be disappointed, but rewarded with the best entertainment"
Immortals (2011)
Very Weak Film!! High expectations or juxtaposition with 300 is strictly discouraged
Another one of these 300-like movie attempt that wont register at all with the fans of that genre. It completely evades me the reason of making a Movie just for the sake of making the moolah out of the popularity of that one good film. The film is without a story, devoid of proper scenic view in the midst of the blood and gore which was an integral part of 300. The fact that including the GOD-angle without giving them any whatsoever screen time (except for the last fight scene).
Thesius characterization is so weak, a guy who's been trained by Zeus, cannot even truly motivate the resistance, not shown fighting the Titans, and apart from the good moves, which every damn hero whether legendary or not, he's just like a normal Roman spear man. A flashy, emotional one-liners were also painfully absent.
To top it all, they had the guts to make an arrangement for the sequel to the film. It got a 3-rating from just for the my liking for this genre of movies. Instead just putting in an effort in making the single movie watchable would have been really appreciated.
On a comic note: "Not worth putting on your cinema-going socks, traversing two blocks, buying popcorn and taking a nap for one and a half hour in public."
The Debt (2010)
Great Drama & Thrill!! Helen Mirren in it (Now you know, your money or time will not be wasted )
The movie having an apt title, 'The Debt' doesn't convey the true meaning till the last parts of the movie. A true thriller at the start but soon seems shifts into a dramatic and interpersonal conflict paradigm about what's wrong and right, and the past even though being kept in shrouded mystery and a well-guarded secret does haunt you, forcing you to go back and correct it, once and for all.
Helen Mirren does an excellent job (as always) displaying an ubiquitous sense of discomfort and guilt that is present throughout her role. Her interweaving role as a old, retired Mossad-agent with a ghoulish past and a mother who values her daughter's happiness above all. Sam Worthington and Martin Csokas also playing an excellent part on the whole.
The film switches from past to present and vice-versa in an excellent manner, maintaining the thrills by not divulging all the information at once about both the time frames.
I did particularly enjoy the whole movie experience with action(not exactly adrenaline pumping but still there), emotions and guilt sprayed on the whole 110 minutes. Well, the movie might have got a bit higher on my side of the review for relating to riveting historical events like Auschwitz, which always gets me into the research mode about what and how it happened. But keeping that apart, this is still an awesome movie to watch on a weekend after buying the DVD (completely worth it).
The Devil's Double (2011)
Movie made me go searching for the whole Real Story!! DO WATCH IT...
Since there has already been a fabulous review covering all the aspects of movie-making and socio-political altercations inside and outside the movie, thereby being caused it, in my own version I would like to share a more real picture.
This movie brings out the best of the Uday Hussein's neurotic and ridiculous behavior. Deeply moved after watching it, I had to go through a whole lot of material and videos to know the real story behind it. Interviews of Latif himself, after which I wouldn't exactly call him a hero in real life. A gradual transformation and a stamp of Uday's personality has left him limping mentally till date. He now, hates Iraq and interestingly the last part of him making an assassination attempt, although plausible could not be verified. This is not an action-paced movie but more of an attempt or rather going too harsh a kind of justification of Iraq's regime change, although Saddam has been shown in a neutral light.
Final Verdict: Not Exactly a historical master-piece but then again incites you to go deeper in search of this question's answer, "What happened after the timeline shown in the movie and how much do I actually believe?" Serves it's purpose damn right.
Do take out time and watch some interviews and documentaries. I change my view--> History is interesting!!
