Chaaver (2023)
Multisensory Experience that proves- art should disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed
While hardcore commies might be hurt after watching it and never get to see the beauty of this, this is a movie that speaks volumes about the mundane + ideology + caste waves + the endless party workers who blindly follow orders like many used to centuries ago under the caste system.
What really overwhelmed me was how the director copulated abhinaya, emotions via Theyyam (and no other dance form could do this but Theyyam because of the aching brutality of the subject), poesy, the way each frame had subtle and obvious relations to the verbs, nouns, and adjectives used before + music + Govind Vasantha's sound trancing up the vibe.
The way the director gave only glimpses of Pepe as Theyyam during the movie and saved his performance for the credit roll was genius. To me, Tinu Pappachan has risen above LJP because the logic and radical rationality he dueled kind of overshadows the mystic and magic realm LJP used in Churuli (sorry, but had to say).
This movie made me smell many frames, feel the touch of the blades on my legs and back, and caroon over the oxymorons. Beautiful. I feel like this is like a dark and gory Sandesham movie and a deeper look at the facts.
Also, the way character descriptions kept rolling in, from the beginning till the last, was very suspenseful. I was literally at the edge of my seat throughout. Lord, it was a quick burner for movie and anything but.
What a movie, TP! Smitten, smitten, and head over heels!
Also, Kiran was every bit amazing. Perfection incarnate. I am so glad it was Pepe and not someone else who was cast. Beautifully done.
PS: I remember this circular broken glass that looked like the eye of an elephant during the last half of the movie that simply made the reference of the elephant more poignant without ever showing the mad elephant, and even painting a vivider picture of the elephant-like madness of humans.
Attention Please (2021)
A plate full of delicious horror with a dash of humour and quirk
This was a movie that I keep reminscing every few hours. It also felt like the movie had Jordan Peele working on it from somewhere.
It had the kinda spine-stabbing, quirky, and brain-teasing writing, performance, wit, and humor with a Malayali garnish.
Vishnu Govind was beyond mesmerizing but the direction, other actors, story, and sounds were incredibly great too. All of you, AMAZING!!!!!!
My non-Malayali husband found it gripping too. I say this because he doesn't understand the language but even with subtitles, Vishnu Govind's long stories and monologues were so well potrayed, written, and captured that we couldn't look away.
The story was refreshing, relatable, and very crisply portrayed without lags, distractions, and stuffed agendas. I could almost see how it could fit into my TGIF parties and end them with a murdered lot.
I hope we get to see the whole crew and Vishnu Govind (LJP please think about him when you're writing/casting) bringing buffets of horror dishes with the same love, attention to detail, and freshness as Attention Please.
And the clever thing is the movie showed a lot of horror in facets without using magic realism, paranormal, or the devil.
What a movie!
Also, I would love to listen to Vishnu Govind telling stories. There's so many layers to this guy!
Tamil Rockerz (2022)
Decent watch
The romance element spoiled the thrill but the series is decent to pique the mind. I liked it because I knew very little about TR (thanks to Malayalam films about Premam's Piracy).
But, it had exaggerated sob stories and long monologues.
Gauthamante Radham (2020)
Soaking wet movie with baseless cliches and stinking jokes
Plot was so bad that it's too obvious that Nano people sponsored a bunch of sub-par 'machine' (because no writer can do this bad) to create a movie around it. Makes one feel that the movie was made a mismatch of a bunch of scenes that sputtered in the mind of a tinman somewhere. There is no logic, reason or warmth to this movie. Its made so badly that you might get nauseated with a migraine. Absolutely pathetic and worth not a second.
I pity the actors who had to work on this movie.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)
Better than all the other movies.
Was on the edge of my seat in the theatre and even my non-potterhead boyfriend was impressed (except for the graphics). It felt a little damp towards the battle in LEstrange graveyard, but it picked up fast and satisfied the witch inside.
Varathan (2018)
Another thrilling story from Amal Neerad
Like most of Fahadh's recent movies, this was breathtaking. It shows the how petty moral policing of a village evolves into life-threatening circumstances. Beautiful and a must-see by everyone. I loved the sheer realism of the marital conflicts to the essence of fear beautifully wrapped in the suspense of meticulous direction. Loved the pace at which the final action almost turned the villains to dust. Love it, will promote it everywhere. Clever, enrapturing, brilliant, realistic, relatable and heart-wrenching. I wish Amal Neerad will make a horror movie with the same elements (or more, of course). I am a fan for life, of both now; Amal Neerad and Fahadh Faasil. I feel like I want to volunteer promoting the movie now that I feasted on it. Great watch in a long-time. Ideal for almost all Indian situations. Please remake it properly in all the Indian languages.
PS: I was so enamored after watching the movie, I just finished writing a detailed plot on Wikipedia.
The Windsors (2016)
Blasting Satires in every Breath
Loved it through and through. Ended up binge watching. This was one of the best comedy satires I watched in a long time. Acting, direction, production were all 5/5!
Vanaprastham (1999)
Amazing. The Artistic Fight With Morality, within and outside.
I was smitten from the first beat. The movie is a beautiful story of something that sounded realistic and happen-able in a distant era. I loved the perfect cast, plot, direction and sheer flawlessness of the frames. PErfect locations, perfect makeup and natural flow of a movie set in the mind of a great artist. Loved every bit of it!
Yavanika (1982)
A touch of reality lost in time
It was like a time-machine for me. The movie was really smart (although it might seem a bit cliche), it upheld the charm throughout. I keep watching it every few years. It's a treat!
Kaliyattam (1997)
A beautiful tale from the country side of God's own country in all its color.
Loved the melancholic trip I had with the movie. From music (I'm playing Ennodenthinee pinakkam right now). It's a beautiful movie that makes me feel alive and beautiful. The acting to direction and music are all perfect. It's a trip worth watching if you like Malayalam movies. This one has a dainty story said in the most melodius voice. I loved the storytelling. It had all the emotions and hence comprises multiple genres, for me!
Kayyoppu (2007)
Wow. This must be an award-movie.
Apparently, Mammootty did not take remuneration for this movie. The artistic or rather, eclectic trip of Kayyoppu is felt for those who have lived through emotions experienced by the protagonist. I for one, could relate to many plot points. Until the very end, it was a drama I was a familiar with, yet hooked me through and through. Would watch it on a rainy day after writing a poem!
Oru Cheru Punchiri (2000)
Such a bittersweet movie.
I've watched this at least 6 times until now. The beauty is hidden in the satires and delectable sarcasms ping-ponged between two married couples. It really reminded me of my mom and dad. The protagonists are nature lovers who live at a house surrounded by their farm in Kerala. After showing the sumptuous love and cute friction between the two, the movie ends on a sad note. But the sadness is so positive too. She changes the emotion in a beautiful dialogue at the end. I've loved watching it and will watch it a 100 more times!
Desperate Housewives (2004)
Thought this was gonna be bad, but it was intriguing and fun.
It's a drama that showed many things. Loved every character. They all reminded me of someone I knew. It was long and hence, more fun. Thanks for making it long enough. It was dragging and predictable at times, but there was some evil fun within it. Loved it is my over-the-top conclusion of the show. But, I did like it!
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015)
Want to laugh from within, without thinking too much? It's totally UNPREDICTABLE!
The nuances and subtle explanations that makes sense for the plot is amazingly portrayed throughout the show. Characters are chic and not actually dumb, but incidentally unaware. Well, that made the perfect mix of satire anyway. I loved every second of it. Was thrilled to see Jon Hamm. Such a dose of unexpected fun with lots of 'Kimmy'.
Altered Carbon (2018)
If you want a bright and trippy series to trip with, this is it.
I'm writing this in tribute to the saturation colors on AC. It was amazing for the trippiness. That's it, I'm saluting the graphics.
Seinfeld (1989)
This is something to watch to make memories. It is so inspiring and HILARIOUS!
Seinfeld is so adequately flawless with its comedy. Smart, sensible and so damn funny, that's what makes Seinfeld best. Perhaps because Larry David went through most of the things too, eh? I'm gonna watch it with my kids someday. This is the oldest best series I guess.
If you want a true comedy that will make you LOL any age, Seinfeld is the way to go.
Oz (1997)
This is the best Show that satiated me.
It's not just a crime, romance, thriller, drama or whatever other genre, series. It's everything. And, mind you, in the best proportions!
I have only watched the show twice, once alone and then with another person, but it overwhelmed it. Wow, every episode must be feature movie and every character a superhero. Amazing storytelling. Augustus Hill, such an amazing character. This is really the best thing I've watched ever, even better than the dinosaur plant opening up after hibernation. Oz is the best. And, sure many shows took up the formula of Oz.
Insatiable (2018)
A big bowl full of satires so smart!
Loved every bit of it. It shows a smart satirical way to understand the good and evil of beauty. I loved how Insatiable broke the filter of society to combat multiple issues like women as sex objects, homosexuality and even orgies, or I'd rather same threesome.
Above all, I loved the souther accent. It was kickass.
13 Reasons Why (2017)
Heartfelt, Warm, Gripping, Bare, Raw, True and Much more!
I felt like I was taken back in time machine with 13 reasons why. It was a great series. I binge watched in three four sessions and finished the whole episode.
The direction and plots were so screaming-real that i had to pause when they showed Hanna slitting her veins. The second season was a little-drag, but it conveyed the message, alright. Loved it through and through. Hope many people watch it and start to understand all the kids they showed in the series.
I'm 24 and I loved it! It's not just a teen series, I mean.
Cuckoo (2012)
After Cuckoo and Rachel, I had to leave too.
Even though Netflix shows 13+ Age category on this, I was intrigued and amused by the series until both Cuckoo and Rachel were switched. The new plot did not make great sense to go along because I stopeed after the two episodes post the change.
There was a fun vibe, all the rest of the character are so-fun, still, had to leave it be. It's pathetic after that.
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018)
This was the most heartfelt movie I saw in a long time
The whole movies was a beautiful trip so finely weaved with excellent direction, casting and such a great lingo. It was like reading a beautiful book. Their literary waves were beautifully crafted with care. There were no flaws for me.
If you're looking for a warm movie to spend your evening with, this is it!
Thondimuthalum Dhriksakshiyum (2017)
I watched thrice and each time I laughed more.
So, the first time I watched, I was stunned.
Second time I watched with my boyfriend, who is a non-malayali and I laughed so much.
Third time, I watched with my Mom, Dad, Brother and Sis-in-Law and we all laughed and cried and commented throughout the movie.
Every scene tells a tale. There's plenty to read between the lines and this is one of the finest movies that has come from Mollywood in a long time. It is an experience each time. I wouldn't mind watching it a 100 times more. You'll be gripped throughout the movie. Fantastic and real-time acting as well as plots.
This should be translated and re-made in many languages! Satires and ambiguity is weaved throughout the piece. It was a beautiful trip for me!
Ee. Ma. Yau (2018)
Creme De La Creme of Mollywood Satire
The film took me on a whirl. It gives a constant shoot of adrenaline in the most predictable scenes by revealing the agendas and cursory nods we have learnt to live in the society. Every whirl was a opening a nasty part of funerals. Wonderful.
It compares to movies like Carnage, Synechdoche, Thondimuthalum Drusakshiyum, Panchavadi Paalam and all to me.
Most parts of the movie is cast with a heavy rain that adds magic to the senseless hullaballoo. Beautifully orchestrated. I fell in love with the director.
