Choose Love (2023)
Interactive is FUN!
I watched this through the first time choosing everything the polar opposite of what I did in real life just for fun. You can choose the fun choice instead of the "sure thing"- clean-cut guy who adores you, is wealthy, and your family loves him. And whatever you choose it's only a movie and doesn't change a thing so it's risk-free fun! Then I watched it again and chose differently. I'd like to see more films like this. The possibilities are endless and it would be a fun movie to watch with a party full of friends, drinks, and snacks. Bottomline, there are no wrong choices in life, only different choices with different outcomes.
Devil in Ohio (2022)
NOT Horror but an Excellent Drama! Not disappointed!
I can see negative reviews if expectations were for a horror mini-series because it is definitely NOT horror but this series did an excellent job covering a creepy misogynistic cult, group stalking, surviving abusive families, trauma, trauma bonding, social services and the very real dangers of ignoring professional boundaries. Some very nice twists! This would be an excellent series to watch for a discussion group too.
I went into this series expecting a disturbed kid escaping a cult and liked it much better than expected. I especially liked the ending because it wasn't a cookie-cutter happy ending where every single deep issue is neatly wrapped up and solved at the end.
SurrealEstate (2021)
Love it and hoping for another season!
We taped this every week and watched it minus the commercials. I love this series. It's fun and they solve an issue in each show while dealing with a longer standing issue that took an entire season to solve. You can enjoy any of the episodes independently. Great formula rather than a drawn out soap opera type storyline.
Good on Paper (2021)
LOVED it!
I had no expectations before viewing this. It just popped up on Netflix and showed a little bit and that was all I needed to see before I was "in" and this was the movie I chose to watch! I love Margaret Cho but had never heard of the lead actress/comedian. It was an unusual story that I didn't know where it was going; except I knew the guy was "off" based on the title alone. I mostly enjoyed the commentary and all the points she made about what she learned. I think this would be helpful to a lot of women who bend over backwards for duds, and the same for men who do. I know people who make excuses for bad behavior because they want someone they are dating to be who they hoped they were. What seems like common sense can be missing for folks who are hungry for this person to be "the one". Great movie for a "Girls' Night In" with friends!
Nobody (2021)
Mr. & Mrs. Smith, but middle-aged and elderly!!
Took my husband, for his birthday, expecting a random action flick for men but it was really good. Plenty of action but a good story with nonstop action and some humor thrown in. We BOTH loved it!!
Stowaway (2021)
So much better than expected!
A great film about moral dilemma and making your life mean something amazing. There is no greater honor than the possibility of saving a life. Very well done!
Them (2021)
WOW!
"Them" is the single most HARSH horror show I have ever seen with supernatural horror mixed with real life horror. It is absolutely emotionally draining to marathon this yet I could not stop watching until I started getting really tired then finishedthe next day. I did stop after one episode to cry. It is very tough to see. Extremely well-written and acted though. It has some elements of Jordan Peele films (one same actress I noticed and some same music in the score) but Peele's work is more subtle with humor mixed in. This is blunt and harsh with no need to read a critique to figure out the underlying message. It started out creepy then there is infuriating, scary, and gut-wrenchingly sad. There is no humor, nor should there be, in this mini-series. "Them" had bits that reminded me of "It" and "The Shining". There are events shown that are even more upsetting because you know that some of the stuff shown truly happened/happens. All I can say is WOW.
The Keeping Hours (2017)
Not Horror
This isn't a true horror movie but so worth watching. It's a beautiful film and I'm so glad I watched it. I can't say much without giving it away but I highly recommend this movie.
Death of Me (2020)
Loved the cultural aspect
Watching the film, I was looking up what was used in the film and saw that it truly part of the folklore and Thai magic. I am always mesmerized to learn more about a cultural belief and/or practice, inspired by seeing a tidbit in a film. The film itself kept me interested, start to finish and I liked the ending!
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Brilliant and Introspective
This film explores life choices and satisfaction versus regret. Clooney's character conveys much of how he's feeling through expressions and flashbacks. There is some mystery in figuring out who a character is and if that character is real or a figment of Augustine's imagination. Several characters have important decisions to make regarding how they choose to proceed under very tough circumstances. This movie hits home what truly matters in life.
The Vast of Night (2019)
Recommend watching in a dark room
I loved the story but it's hard to follow since it's so incredibly dark. Watching this in a very dark room helped immensely as well as using captions as there's a lot to follow. If you like classic Twilight Zone, you'll love this movie! I would have given it a higher rating if it had been easier to see.
Unsane (2018)
Seriously scary movie
WOW! This is one of the scariest films I've ever seen, in a REAL scary not supernatural "boogie man" kind of way. Anyone who has ever dealt with a stalker will find this terrifying.
#Saraitda (2020)
Exciting start to finish!
I was going to give this an 8 most of the way thru then upped to a 9. However, after that ending, it's a 10! We needed this!
Fantasy Island (2020)
Excellent!
Any bad reviews must have expected a traditional monster movie. Interesting from the start to the finish! Rarely a film where I can't guess what's going to happen. Lots of twists and turns with a lesson.
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
We LOVE this movie!!
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020) does for music what Blades of Glory (2007) did for figure skating! You will LOVE it!! Especially the party where artists from different countries are all singing different songs! This movie is also laugh out loud FUNNY! Will Ferrell is awesome, as always, and does his own singing.
Aftermath (2016)
We LOVE the use of cultural mythology!
I fell in love with this show immediately and watched the entire first season (to date) AGAIN with my daughter when she was home from college. This is NOT a zombie apocalypse series and if you are expecting that, you will be disappointed. What we do love about this series is that every single episode introduces a touch of real cultural mythology from several cultures. As we watch this, we research further on the mythology presented in each episode in the story line and have learned much about touches of mythology in other cultures from New Zealand, The Philippines, to Ireland, etc. So far the series follows original Star Trek formula in that the important main characters have not been lost. We refer to the others as the "red shirt" characters. If you're a deep thinker who likes learning, you'll love this series. If you're looking for heavy violence and a weekly snuff show, something like The Walking Dead would be more up your alley. This one leans more into fantasy/end-of-times mythology. Sort of Games of Thrones meets The Walking Dead minus the heavy death scenes. Unlike those shows this is one you can watch with kids 10 and over. Some of the characters are laughably cliché like the nerdy daughter and the tough-guy former military mom but overall very enjoyable.
