Bombay Talkies (2013)
Well and Truly a celebration of Hindi Cinema
artistic...brilliant...honest...relevant....cinema... Bombay Talkies!! Karan Johar takes up a difficult topic and treatment of the topic and the characters and the scenarios, is all very, lets say, un-karan johar like....refreshingly artistic....the story lacks a closure, but you get to see a very very capable director in the short story!! Dibakar banerjee picks up a good short story, and an outstanding actor in Nawaz, to create his share of magic...Nawaz has again showed why he is easily among the greatest actors ever, anywhere, when it comes to displaying pain on screen...and,if you have ever done theater, you will be tempted to get up and salute this part...
Zoya Akhtar picks up a Katrina Kaif item number out of the forgettable Tees Maar Khan, and still creates a brilliant story out of it...the treatment, like all the other parts, is extremely realistic...and performances, like all parts, brilliant!! After the above brilliant sequences, excellently made, and brilliantly acted, which would make you clap, on several occasions...and smile...and cry..comes up the sequence by Anurag Kashyap....and what better way to prove, that he truly is the king among the film makers today!! The final story, has Anurag Kashyap, at even his best...and you have a relatively unknown face (guy who played Nawaz's brother in GOW), giving an outstanding performance...this part is beyond brilliance...a simple story told and depicted in a masterful manner...its so good that at times, that you may laugh and cry at the same time (actually!) fitting tribute....thank you to the team....respect for Hindi Cinema...respect for Bombay Talkies!!
Om Shanti Om (2007)
Hats off to the audience for making it such a huge hit
I would have never wasted my time writing over this piece of crap, popularly known as Om Shanti Om...but I really wish to salute the audience who made it a huge blockbuster. Its said that anything and everything is possible...the movie proves it.For someone like me,who in all his humility believes that mankind exists in its present wonderful form because of its sensibilities, its actually a miracle that people appreciated this THING!! What I do write as a review...the movie is a remake of Karz, which itself was the remake of Madhumati.Madhumati had exceptional music and so is worth watching...in fact 25 percent of the movie being songs, one can surely enjoy it.But how the hell is OSO entertaining??..The spoof on south Indian movies is good, but everything else is too bad to be tolerated.I watched because almost everyone around me saw it..talked about it..
The movie isn't a big nonsense, that would be like being too strict...my point is that there actually is nothing(NOTHING) in the movie which is original and worth appreciation. So obviously this movie is like a rock bottom for me.
Sholay (1975)
The movie is a landmark...Gabbar singh remains the most popular character ever
Only non-Indians will say its not a great movie...I wouldn't give it a 10 because my personal favourites are always the realistic and artistic movies...but when it comes to masala movies, there are few movies which are comparable to this movie. Agreed, the movie draws inspiration from many western movies. But thats nothing to be ashamed at.In present days, filmmakers are almost making remakes while copying ideas...that must be avoided but taking inspiration is not bad.moreover what made sholay so successful are the performances..especially the aspect of dialogues and dialogue delivery...now that wasn't copied...the whole actress aspect wasn't lifted and is so much loved. Gabbar sing became a huge huge success...33 years later I played this character in my college fest and I was a star after that.such is the craze level of this character. I agree it isn't that great in technical terms or in matters of storyline..but the fact remains that everything in the movie fits in so perfectly. You can take all the tasty ingredients but unless you have a perfect mixture, you wont have the perfect taste....this is what sholay is...a perfect mixture...That will remain something to be proud of.
Ijaazat (1987)
Any era,Any language...this is one of the best
This is the most artistic movie I have ever seen.... ...very very poetic..each scene has so much of symbolism... ...scenes in the waiting room stand out for me...such things have often been shown in bollywood... ...but the dialogues and the performances...along with awesome direction,music...and to top it all,the lyrics... ...as far as the lyrics go,this is the best movie ever in bolllywood(wont even use arguably for it)...
....mera kuchh saaman probably is the best song ever in terms of lyrics..any gulzar fan cannot have enough of this movie...watching the movie is like living a lifetime...10 out of 10 is like stating the obvious...
Race (2008)
One of the worst ever made
with what I have written in the headline...if I say that I have watched the movie twice...will be surprising,no??...OK here is the reason..once I watched just to know the story constantly forwarding and skipping parts...and this is how uninteresting the movie is...I finished it in less than an hour...the second time I sat down with some of my friends, and enjoyed the movie as one of the greatest comedy...such is the stupidity of the so called "twists" that all a sensible person can do is to laugh his heart out.... I would have given an 8 if this movie would have been publicized as a comedy movie...but as it was supposed to be a thriller, and doesn't thrill a bit...it doesn't matter if its predictable or not..u know that every possible permutation and combination has been used and almost everyone helps everyone...and almost everyone cheats everyone...and we have a really horrible movie... *Anil Kapoor can act...I respect him..but in the movie he plays one of the worst roles ever scripted*
