Nosedive
10 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Going from season 1 to season 2 has been an absolute heart-breaking nosedive. Season 2 isn't bad - it's just so disengagingly uninteresting. I think that most of the new supporting cast is more suited for the 99cent DVD bin at the department store. The amazing acting talent seen in season 1 is thinned out in season 2. The storyline for each main character is just bad bad bad bad. The mission to rescue Caspar? Give me a root canal instead. Aneesha and her rogue band of - what? Vigilantes? - cringe worthy. Trevante wanders off to the middle of nowhere, becoming so seemingly ineffectual that he would have been better off staying home to flip burgers in his backyard. Mistuki - ahhhh Mituski.... how the mighty have fallen.... to another lame storyline. Dead serious: the only enjoyable element of season 2 has been listening to David Bowie's Space Oddity. How did this happen? Did the writers change? Did the writers stay the same but somehow lost their mojo after season 1? Aaaagghhhh, season 2 - what a disappointment.

The angel just needs to make one call.

Warning: Spoilers
This is the last great movie about high school. Like it's not the greatest of high school movies, but it's a great one and the last great one. Maybe I'm wrong, but I really don't think that I am. I would give this 9.9 out of ten... that 0.1 ... what is that? 10%? 0.10%? I don't know, you do the math. But yeah, that teeny weeny bit, like a niggle in the tooth that leads to a cavity, is Ethan's performance (or how his character was written)... his whiny, selfish quest to divulge his feelings for/to JLH - lame. The whole "Amanda, I love you" scene - I wished that I had to run to the door for a pizza delivery at that point. There were so many other amazing characters / cameos / storylines to follow and focus on. And dead serious: Seth Green's performance - I've seen much worse come home with an Oscar. The writers broke the mold when creating the character of Special K. Behind it all is an amazing soundtrack, even beyond what made it on to the CD - I think it's the overall song selection throughout the movie that makes it relatable/relevant to grads/almost-grads from the late 80s to the late 90s -- I'm forgiving the inclusion of Barry Manilow (I got it, I just didn't like it). I love this movie - like eating sugar-filled colorful cereal before having to worry about DFI, like Polarioids before the cloud, like life before death. Peace.

Better than I had expected

Don't know why there are so many haters for this one. As somebody who normally avoids Diane Keaton movies, I was surprised by how good this one was. I think they could have stretched it out a bit longer to fill in a bit more for each of the different couples, but there wasn't one dull moment, great pacing, lots of laughs, great date movie.

Warning: Spoilers
I think there were 4 or 5 scenes which were noteworthy... outnumbered by many cringeworthy scenes. Often, one gimmick followed another. And when the movie occasionally seemed to be finding its legs, in comes an embarrassingly overacted Finn or Poe, killing the legitimacy of what should have been an instant classic. Dialogue was reminiscent of what Lucas would give us. Battle scenes were boring. Seriously, if the movie could be trimmed down to just the scenes with Kylo and Rey (except that extremely awkward bit towards the end), it would have been much better. Fortunately, The Mandalorian will help wash the taste of disappointment from my mouth.

did they read the book before or after writing the screenplay?

Warning: Spoilers
This might be the worst book to movie adaptation I've ever seen. I actually had to increase my rating for Cloud Atlas after seeing this movie. So many fundamental elements of the original story were excluded that I often thought (sarcastically) they may have based the movie on a different book - maybe I had read the wrong 'Silver Linings Playbook' book. I loved the book. I even found it enjoyable reading the book knowing who would be playing the various characters in the movie. I'm no fan of Bradley Cooper, but I felt he was perfect for the role of Pat as I made my way through the book. And surprisingly, I thought he was the strongest performer when I finally watched the movie. Jennifer Lawrence (meeeeeow) was entirely underutilized in the movie. Great that she won an Oscar, but she should have won it for a movie and performance better than this. & Robert DeNiro: Does this guy simply show up for the $ these days? I wonder if they recreated the father for the sake of giving him more lines in the movie. That Aussie chick who plays the mother: she was great, but similar to Jen - entirely underutilized. I want to forget this movie and reread the book.

:(

I walked out after about 10 or 15 minutes so this might actually be a great movie, for all I know. But if the first bit was anything to go by, this might actually be one of the worst movies ever made. EVER! Brendan Fraser's constant look of surprise leads me to believe that he was duped into doing this movie. Poor guy. And recasting Evelyn? What a joke. Seriously, this one makes The Scorpion King look like an Oscar-winner. Don't pay to see this movie. Buy some lottery tickets instead. Or send your money to Brendan Fraser directly. Maybe he's hurting for cash and that's why he did this movie. Or maybe he lost a bet. Or maybe something dear to him was being held hostage in exchange for doing this movie.
