Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (2023)
Feels like it's missing something.
They got my eyes with the trailer and then the first 20 minutes of the movie.
But the movie didn't have this feeling of the original movie, and I think it's because it's just straightforward - It's a rescue mission and that's that.
The original movie has some complications and curiosity behind the viewers. But this movie is almost trying to imitate the first movie, the difference only that they're 'breaking in' and more sophisticated equipment.
It goes through scenes or events of typical problems and hopelessness that have been explored by many other children's movies, thus not making this one exactly special.
It's not a terrible movie but not great either. They were faithful to the animation as always with evident work put into it, but the story just doesn't cut it along with the 23-year gap. This movie was an unnecessary sequel.
Poison (2023)
It was something.
What you're about to read is from a person who had never watched more than 1 movie from Wes Anderson.
Alright, the immediately signature style of Wes Anderson would show up in the first ten seconds of a scene, and then you'll thought "oh, so this is how they're gonna tell the story."
As you progress, the 17 minute would keep you on your seat till the end, just. We see the actors fulfilling how Wes Anderson wants them to act. It was very unique, but also rather limiting to actually bring the story up.
At some point, there are cartoon-ish style of comedy and Monty Python. However, with the restricted acting, doesn't really bring you that smile, more of "wow, okay, that's quite cool." for the remainder of the short film.
In my own words. I'd say this short film is too straightforward in every regard, but they did it well enough for the viewers, thus it's a worthy collection for Wes Anderson.
Black Mirror: Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too (2019)
A unique episode
Quite a one eighty change on what you expect from a Black Mirror episode. I can tell that you think Rachel Too is about to go rogue and a violent little robot, but no, none of that happened.
This was a pretty fun episode for me after watching every Black Mirror episode up to this point. It wasn't dirty, in fact it's one of the cleanest episode in Black Mirror despite the swearing.
It did had a generic feeling of those teenage movie trope about a group of people vs one particular villain. It wasn't greatly special but definitely something with the style of Black Mirror. Throughout the middle till the end of this episode, I was on my seat and wondering for the next thing to happen.
Thing is, I didn't even realize it was Miley Cyrus that performed in this episode, mostly because I never watch or hear her music. And I thought to myself when reading all the hate: Do you need to not know Miley Cyrus to actually enjoy this episode? Because that's how I feel.
This episode deserves at least 7/10 for having the guts to break out of generic Black Mirror.
Robot Dreams (2023)
A pretty sweet movie you can watch that keeps you on your chair
I always liked an animation that has a constant detail and art style level between the characters, objects, and background. This was definitely one of them.
Smartly produced dialogue-less animation and you can definitely feel the heart poured into making this animation. All the small details are given attention even for a few seconds.
It somehow took me some time to figure out why this movie was called "Robot Dreams" until nearly halfway through, but I definitely had a good time and a ride of emotions through the movie.
However, what I think got me off the edge was on the very ending itself; I felt the ending may seem as a happy ending but it didn't give the viewers much of the satisfaction they needed and killed most of the moral lesson, leaving what we've already been told a few times.
Overall, if you're into animation, this is still definitely a movie you should watch once.
