The Last of Us (2023)
Season 1 Review: Could have been much better
Great production value, solid cinematography and decent acting. Terrible pacing, mediocre story and inconsistent characters.
The premise: Joel, who lost his daughter during the zombie outbreak is contracted 20 years later, to transport a young girl, Ellie, who is immune to zombie bites, to a hospital where she can be studied to help create a cure.
Finale: They get to the hospital and Joel finds out they intent to kill Ellie in an attempt to find a cure. Joel kills almost everyone at the hospital and takes Ellie back to the community where his brother lives.
The problem is that very little happens between the first and last episodes. Yes, Joel and Ellie develop a father-daughter bond, but that isn't worth over 8 hours for the entire season. This post-apocalyptic delivery quest has multiple episodes with irrelevant backstories of dead characters. The episodes have many filler scenes that add nothing to the story (Giraffes). There are also multiple episodes with no zombies and at times, it's like they don't exist. Characters walk around talking and yelling like there's not potential danger around every corner.
Inconsistencies in characters. Joel has great combat and survival skills, but one guy running at him in broad daylight catches him off guard, and he's stabbed. The woman who contracted Joel, to take Ellie to the hospital in the first place, gets there before Joel and Ellie. Also, she has known Ellie from birth and is still willing to have her dissected in the hope of finding a cure.
It's not even guaranteed that a cure can be made from Ellie and finding a cure doesn't mean everything will fine. The cure only helps if a zombie bites you. It's unclear if the cure would prevent infection when a zombie makes out with you (the mouth to mouth thing), but if you get swarmed or a big zombie rips off your head, it definitely won't help. The cure could only help a very specific set of people, barely scratching the surface of the true problem of eradicating the zombies. I'll admit this is more of generalized problem when introducing a cure into the zombie genre.
There's also the issue of getting people who've been living in a post-apocalypse for 20 years to stop fighting each other, which would probably be a more daunting task.
Overall, a promising first episode led to a tedious season and a disappointing finale. I haven't played the game, so this review is purely on the story presented in the show. If the game is this slow, I'm surprised it even became popular. It could be one of the best TV adaptation of a video game, but that's not saying much.
5/10.
The Consultant (2023)
Poorly constructed story
The premise is, the consultant offers "immortality" to a young CEO in exchange for his life. That makes no sense, you can't be immortal if you're dead. Apparently, a 20 year old cares more about his "legacy" then the 50 plus years ahead of him, and agrees to the deal. But it turns out, the consultant has mind control powers and has a little kid murder the CEO. This points to the consultant being the devil or some demon, with a gold skeleton that likes to turn around failing companies in exchange for a soul. If he has mind control, why even bother trying to help the company? It's very confusing why he uses power on some people and not others. For example, he "convinced" a lady to amputate several limbs and replace them with robotic ones but can't prevent the guy trying to kill him. As the story progresses the questions are answered with more questions.
Who is in control of this multi million dollar company? Investors are mentioned but no one shows up when the CEO is murdered.
Why would the guy try to kill the consultant by breaking the floor beneath him? Because it's like the game they made? Why not check if he's dead? Why take the toe and incriminate yourself?
What happened when the fire department arrived and there was bloody foot prints? Would they follow them? What about all the cameras that would have caught the attempted murder? Who fixed all the damage caused?
Back to the toe. Seriously, why take the toe? Wouldn't you notice right away the bone was gold? Why would you boil a toe inside your house? What are you gonna do with a gold toe bone?
The answer to all these questions is NOTHING.
Yes, Christopher Waltz is great actor, but the story he's in is just bad. There are a couple of good scenes when he has the remote workers to come into work.
More frustrating than entertaining.
