Wednesday (2022)
Great plot, great acting, great directing
Everyone is talking about Ortega (Wednesday Adams) and Tim Burton and sure, they deserve a lot of the credit but the truth is, the script is really well-written and the lines and storyline unravel flawless.
It's pure entertainment, but don't let that stop you.
The bleak view of Wednesday is just the perfect cynical voice of 2023, seeing right through the superficiality and advertisement of mediocre experiences.
I loved her lines.
I also greatly appreciated her delivery, quite perfect for such a young actress. Hands down to her.
All the actors here played their part so well, including Gwendoline Christie (principal Weems), who has shown her true colors recently in another big part as Lucifer in The Sandman. Love her talent.
Tim Burton strikes again, but I didn't expect anything less from him, this is truly right up his alley and he makes the most of it.
What I noticed is that he kept his unique style while also laying down fresh, small directing details that are very much 'in' right now.
He combines the old and familiar with the new in a way that's exciting and completely absorbing.
I liked that even if it's probably targeted at the younger generations it's still a fun watch for adults as well. It kept me on my toes from start to finish, couldn't stop watching it.
No unnecessary additions just to keep with the times, plain and simple morbid quirks in a fun, engaging atmosphere of contrasting characters and mysterious plots.
I gave this an 8 because of the level of depth, but for a program of this type, it's as good as it gets!
Give it one episode and you'll be hooked.
Electric Dreams (2017)
Underrated SciFi series
These series were a pleasant surprise. Each episode has its own storyline, with mildily successful but recognizable actors and with surprisingly insightful stories. It manages to be mind-bending, but classic at the same time. You could say it is dystopian like Black Mirror, but it has hope and melancholy weaved into it.
Every episode could be a pilot for a separate series or a movie on its own.
Although each episode is equally emotional, exciting and thought-provoking, they also have their unique style. The direction and mood are set to be distinct, luring us into a completely different world each time.
As episodes went by, I felt more and more disappointed the series were discontinued. This futuristic drama, action movie, sci-fi, dystopian meld deserves more than one season.
The Peripheral (2022)
I honestly don't understand the bad reviews
I honestly want to know what are the people who gave this a bad review comparing it to, that's much better.
I failed to find plot holes or tedious storytelling.
5 episodes in and I am still hooked and frustrated I can't watch the whole season in one go.
The Peripheral belongs to a new sci-fi wave where we take the last 10-20 years and extrapolate what might happen in the future in terms of technology, science and humanity.
It's not about spaceships and mindless chases, although it has a bit of a videogame vibe to it.
It has everything it needs to be intriguing: dystopian context, believable characters, a solid plot, great acting.
We are drawn in from the first episode and then kept on coming with mysteries at every turn.
It is beautifully shot, the special effects and CGI are consistent to what a possible future might look like and most importantly, it's not predictable.
It opens up a world that I want to see more of and hopefully not only for one season.
Night Sky (2022)
Slow paced sci-fi that deserves a watch
This series is not your regular sci-fi. It starts with an old couple visiting a mysterious chamber in their shed and it keeps on going slow, as if we're supposed to pace ourselves to their lifestyle, their rhythm.
We can see from the beginning that the writers spent time on building the characters, getting to know their quirks, their secrets and their pain.
The actors are great, the dialogue is real, not like those action heroes cheesy jokes. Everything works towards realism and what some common people would do if they found something truly remarkable in their backyard.
The only fault of Night Sky is that it's trying to tell a story in 8 episodes, when it could be told in just 4.
I think they really relied on the show being continued, because the ending promises to deliver more answers in the second season.
But it didn't work out for them and now we'll never know what happens.
It's a decent series that doesn't go for flashy action scenes and cringe lines. The backstory seems solid and would involve to expand a lot more, if Amazon would ever change their mind. Hope it does.
The Expanse (2015)
Not great, not terrible
I only watched 2 seasons until now. I started watching this with a little bit more enthusiasm than I continued.
It's a good story, with the classic imminent SF threat to all humankind luring from the beginning, but the pacing is very slow for no reason.
I found myself wanting to skip scenes pretty often.
But it does have some decent parts. The settings and tech logic are pretty good, and the future of humans divided and trying to have the upper hand is realistic.
I like the female characters and it's good to see a female leader that uses different tactics to hone its power for a change, but the male characters are pretty much templates of other movies and series that came before it.
The action scenes are kind of cheap, predictable and don't leave gasps behind.
Whenever the main characters are trying to accomplish something, it's so obvious that something will go bad, big or small, but they will prevail. It happens at least 3-4 times per episode. It becomes tiresome and expected.
I am not intrigued by what's happening and I should be, since the main event presented in season 1 should be of a magnitude that's life-changing, but instead is downplayed to the little world each character lives in.
The characters follow a very narrow-minded approach that I hope will change as the story evolves.
Some characters don't have clear motivations, since they are presented in an episode and then get killed by the end, so you clearly see every character that's not part of the main, a pawn to forward the story or to overcomplicate it until we reach the main event.
I honestly don't know why this has 8.5.
It's good to pass the time, but doesn't have the kind of mystery or pace that will get you hooked.
Distancia de rescate (2021)
For anyone who didn't understand this movie
I wouldn't call the movie slow paced or boring, as some of the people here say it is.
Any good movie leaves room for interpretation, and this movie isn't short of it.
From how I saw it and how the scenes played out I'd say:
Not everything is meant to make sense, it's a "fever dream".
Amanda was suspicious of Carola stealing her kid, but that never happened. She took the kid back to the old clairvoyant to save her from imminent death by making another "migration".
Maybe she wanted to keep her daughter, but the husband came and took her. She then decided to leave her own family and disappear.
David said he didn't share half with someone else, but when Amanda's husband comes back at the end, he acts exactly like Nina would, getting on the back seat where she always stays and holding the teddybear that she always had.
This made me believe David and Nina are sharing their souls/bodies, but Amanda didn't make it in time to the green house and died.
When David is pulled out of the car, he looks as the car gets farther and farther away but he remains still - as if the invisible thread between them gets tighter and tighter. He looks as if he is abandoned by his father.
If David arrived at the green house during the migration, he was moving. The old lady said only the things that are ready to make this switch should move.
It might be possible that Carola was planning all along to steal her child, but I'd have to give it another watch to notice how things unfolded.
She might be wearing heels so she doesn't get contaminated. Carola might have taken Amanda outdoors so much on purpose.
That is also a possibility, but I didn't pay attention to this so much, since it all seemed innocent and light-hearted.
I hope this sheds some light into what this movie is about and why it isn't bad at all, at least in my opinion.
