Life Like (2019)
Unlife-like
If a robot farts in the woods would anyone be able to smell it? Talk about a stinker. There really are no redeeming features to this film. The characters are so annoying. Especially the wife. The script is dull as ditch water that you just wish you were there to shake these people up a bit. No one talks like this.
The non robot idea is beyond absurd. Humans, by their very nature have biological functions that it's impossible not to notice eventually.
And what year was this supposed to be set in because the mobile phone appears to have not been invented.
Do not waste your time watching this, you will regret it.
A Good Person (2023)
A light approach to a serious subject
The death of someone else in a car accident when you are the driver and especially when it is your fault should surely be approached with extreme care. However, in this movie, I never really felt that the writers wanted to get their hands too dirty with regard to the subject matter.
For instance, towards the end of the movie there is a 5 minutes montage where the main character goes from her previous state of mind to ask better and that's it. And this in a 2 hour long movie where they could probably have left some of the other material out without losing anything from the dynamic of the plot.
Also, let's be honest here, in reality this storyline likely would never happen. For 1, the cops would have been all over this case and she would have likely been prosecuted. It's clear the evidence is there because the father of 1 of the deceased confronts her with it near the end of the movie.
Plus, if he was aware of it, would be not have shared that info with the rest of the family, including his own son, who was her boyfriend? This would have required a massive change in the dynamic of the story. Too much so, in that it just would no longer work.
So way too many inconsistencies for me to be able to stay rooted in the characters.
The Voyeurs (2021)
Story more than a bit ridiculous
This film has not 1 twist, but several. If there was a twistometer, this would definitely score a 10. The more twists there are doesn't necessarily mean the movie is going to be the greatest, however.
2 major flaws on the reality landscape kinda throws a spanner in the escapism of it all. You can't print to your neighbour's printer unless you've managed to hack into their WiFi. Don't recall that happening. Secondly, unexpected deaths usually require an autopsy, which would have revealed what was in that person's system. So, if you tried to drug someone in order to make things look like suicide, you're going to be out of luck. Apparently, no problem in this movie.
Amanda Knox (2016)
Something's not quite right
I have always had a penchant for real world crimes. Especially when it comes to ones involving the injustice of the criminal system. And so, when I came across this documentary, and my memory of it involving such injustice as I recollected, I thought it would make an interesting watch in order to find out where the justice system has failed Amanda Knox.
However, as I followed the documentary, as it attempted to prove how shoddy and blinkered the whole investigation against Knox and Solliceto had been, some things started to provoke unanswered questions.
How did she manage to return on the morning after the murder and take a shower without noticing the break in. Even Sollecito pointed this out when he recounted his arrival at the house that morning.
Why did they cave in so readily to pressure from the police at interview, so it seems. Having been in similar situations and of a similar age at the time this makes no sense. The one thing you keep in your mind, no matter what the perceived threat, is that it will all be over soon as long as you don't crack. And I was no tough guy. Far from it. Because you know that the consequences will be a whole lot worse if you do. And yet these 2 starting singing like canaries at the first semblance of a threat. Why? Were they really that week willed or did they feel the interrogation was getting too close for comfort so they had to come up with something.
As a result, i am still unsure of their innocence, if that's what the documentary makers were hoping to achieve. Instead it has provoked more curiosity than closure. And, from what I have now discovered, there are 2 sides to every story.
My own conclusion from this is that the whole truth will never be known. Guede, who I am convinced was definitely involved, has too much to lose by speaking about this and so his lips will likely always remain closed. And without him there will be no new revelations.
Athena (2022)
Keystone cops would be tougher than these cops
Gave up after about 50 minutes because somehow a bunch of punk teenagers were able to out fight the police at every turn. Seriously?
The movie shows some serious unrest going on and, in order to deal with it, the police send in about 100 riot officers. Where were the rest of them? In reality there would have been hundreds of officers and these kids would have been totally outmanoeuvred. But for some strange reason during the assault on the complex they go in a few hundred light and with no obvious plan of action other than to stand in a circle with their shields up and not having a clue what to do whilst guys on motorcycles circle around them and they get shot at with fireworks. Where did the director come up with that. Watching Mad Max recently?
How convenient.
A serious movie that cannot be taken seriously because of this appalling plot.
Causeway (2022)
Nothing to show here
All the performances are pretty decent, and the 2 main leads do a fine job - and that's why the 6 stars - however no-one here appears to have been given that much to work with. Everything is below the surface and, as a consequence, very little is revealed about either one of the 2 leads on any kind of level.
I didn't really know any more about them as human beings at the end of the movie as I did after the first 30 minutes. Yes we find out their stories (kind of), but only on a rather superficial level. Ok, I understand that perhaps that was what the creators were after. To keep everything very understated but I really needed more because in the end the whole thing just meandered to a rather unsatisfying finale.
Life with Murder (2010)
3 people living a lie. Not just 1
There are telling moments in this documentary where you can see it is also the parents who are scared of the truth.
Denial comes in many forms and this film reveals the weakness and fragility that envelops this family.
3 people made a choice to continue living as if this tragedy never happened. If the mother and father can be so pragmatic then is this about their love for their son or their own selfish needs taking precedence. That is that they made a choice to keep their son in their life rather than face the reality of what he did and it's consequences.
Shamefully, the murdered sibling and how she died has almost become an irrelevance.
At the beginning I felt empathy for the parents and what they must have been going through. By the end that had long since disappeared.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
All too predictable
This film literally carries no surprises. Even during the supposedly tense parts of the movie. At no time was I on the edge of my seat wondering what might happen as it was abundantly clear that none of the characters in this movie were going to suffer any kind of major mishap.
Also every other character apart from Maverick had nothing to get your teeth into that even if something had happened to them, including Miles Teller's, I'm not sure I would have been that bothered.
The original was ok and looking at the reviews here I was led to believe this was a major improvement over that, but not even close.
