The Handmaid's Tale (2017)
Too long in the tooth.
Barely one episode in to series 5 and I'm done with this story. One and two were pretty decent even if the subject matter was disturbing and dystopian. Now it's outright depressing. It's hard to care about June any longer or what she's fighting for. She's really just lost the plot. So much so that all those that were close to her are shocked by her cruelty. Some irony there.
There is some good acting, even where the story is repetitive at times and you wish the sun would shine just that bit more, but I don't think this show is doing anyone any favours. Misandry, meh, I think I'm done with that.
Dave Chappelle: The Closer (2021)
Something for all of us
I'm not even a fan, really. I'm a middle aged white guy - one of the ones he pokes fun at and it's hilarious, crude at times, sure, but he's thought this through. You can tell. He makes his points and they land.
The ending caught me off guard. It was poignant. Respect to him.
Flaked (2016)
Underrated gem
Having seen Arnett in several things prior, I hoped this would be good. And it really was. While it's got the slow-fi , slacker vibe to it it really has substance, heart and a lot of great humour. The dynamic between Chip, Denis and Cooler is so good.
I think 2 seasons was perfect for this story really. It kind of left you wanting more.
Le bureau des légendes (2015)
Superb
Others have said it but this is a gripping, very well written and produced series. Not hard to see how it lasted for so many seasons. A fine drama with a complex love story woven through it.
Casual (2015)
Has it's moments.
There are good moments in Casual, especially series 1. After this I found it patchy at best. The characters are often unlikeable. Valerie's neurosis is particularly painful to watch. And she's a therapist. The irony!
Also, I'm for female empowerment but the idea that Valerie just gets to have every guy that crosses her path with zero accountability gets old (and cringey) very fast. The concept of modern dating and / or modern women are not treated that kindly here. It's all a bit shallow at times. But hey, maybe that was the idea. The male characters are more or less portrayed as bunch of bozos with little going for them. In season 3 when Alex takes the IT job and is constantly berated & belittled by the millennial kick-ass women... seeing the pattern here? Sadly, a lot of good shows are being ruined by this trope.
I think I'm done with this show...
