Entertaining, if somewhat empty
18 May 2004
Saw this yesterday at a media screening over here. It was almost as notable for the laughter breaking out at completely inappropriate times as for the action on screen.

The idea of the world being embraced in a new ice age due to global warming is an interesting one, a pity then it seems that global disasters only ever happen in the USA. Add a pinch of mawkish feel-good characters and setups (the sick kid in hospital, the self sacrificing doctor) and a dash of over the top movie physics, and the result is a typical Hollywood blockbuster with little bearing on reality.

Not to say it wasn't thoroughly enjoyable mind you, just that if you go in expecting anything other than a heavy hand teaching that climate change = bad, you are sorely mistaken.

Wonderful black comedy...

I don't know what all these people are complaining about - I saw this movie in a film festival over here and spent most of the movie trying not to p*** myself with laughter. How the characters get in and out of such completely off the wall situations, and the deadpan way they said some of the lines left me in hysterics.

Granted it isn't a perfect film, but it's a good 7/10

Overblown, overlong, and thank god it's finally over
25 December 2002
This film is one of the more tired efforts in the series, and probably will only appeal to the more die hard trekkie. It starts slow, finishes slow, and fills in the gaps with the occasional spectacular sequence, interspersed with slow.

Overall, very disappointing.

One of the most disturbing films I have ever seen,
14 April 2002
But at the same time, one of the most compelling.

Loosely based on the Sanford experiment, the film takes a look at what might happen should the experiment carry on, and everything that happens is terrifyingly plausible. The two main protagonists are chillingly real, although many of the supporting characters get very little filling out.

The film is exceptionally well crafted, and feels very realistic. Typical of German films, it is very in-your-face, but this only adds to the experience, and makes it less like a film, and more that you are there.

A very very good film, although not one to bear too much repeated watching. Make sure you have something cheerful to do afterwards.
