Shin seiki Evangelion Gekijô-ban: Air/Magokoro wo, kimi ni (1997)
Beautiful
The ending itself is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Decades ahead of its time, I think I've never seen something so beautiful and... hopeful and hopeless at the same time, based on your interpretation.
This film is a top notch mindfucker, but it's so well done, and makes so much sense with what episodes 25 and 26 (what's happening in Shinji's mind) are. Now it all feels... complete, even though so much rests unanswered, but maybe it's better this way, mistery is the key in such things.
I felt the same way just twice in my life, when watching 2001 "Space Odissey" and when playing "Outer Wilds". Meaning: I didn't get any answer, but, somehow, I was fullfilled and I felt better.
EoE won't give you any answer at all, but, at the very end, you'll understand everything nevertheless, and, somehow, you'll manage to find good in what happens.
I don't usually say this, but... MASTERPIECE!
Shinseiki Evangelion: Sekai no Chuushin de Ai o Sakenda Kemono (1996)
A masterpiece, if looking from a certain perspective, a mess if looking from the opposite one
I'll start by saying that, at first, I didn't like the show, it seemed like a bounch of episodes of poor sci fi fixed togheter in low budget episodes. In fact, I still think that, in order to understand and appreciate this series WITHOUT the films and rebuilds, you need to think of it as the first perspective as it follows:
First perspective: the whole series is "humans trying to find their true self". Therefore, this finale is truly fullfilling and makes sense as a whole. Sure, some things do not catch up, and a lot remained unanswered: what are the Angels, why are they here? Where do they come from, how did Adam appear into this world? But, at the same time, this Shinji problem with his personality is something we all have... and you can find pieces of the finale trough the whole series, therefore, the finale is a masterpiece;
second perspective: if you take the series as sci fi series, it's pretty messy and... bad, honestly. Until episode 11, everything seems just a bounch of episodes linked togheter by the same world and characters, but the Angels do not have a meaning, and appear for no reason at all, for no purpose at all if not reach Adam. Why? So much remained unanswered. Then, the plot gets better, but the problem is that, with such developement, you would need a different tipe of finale.
Therefore, since I am all for this kind of endings, I like to think at the series as the first perspective, therefore I loved this finale. But, again, so much remained unanswered. That's why, as far as I can consider this episode sooo good, I, at the same time, think that some more episodes where needed in order to explain things once and for all.
The Wheel of Time: The Eye of the World (2021)
And this vote does not involve the changes!!! I'm talking about a TV episode!
And it is mediocre. 1-3 stars are as fake as 10. I can understand non readers where charmed by the cold opening (which was fire, gotta be honest), the guy at the Eye, and the battle at Fal Dara. For me (book reader), admitting that Eye of the world finale was a mess, I can say this makes more sense in some ways ( if not for the Dark one's Prison being at the Eye... Why, you didn't like Shayol ghul?), But was poorly delivered.
Major pacing issues. CGI was mediocre, hidden by dark photography. The Rand part was boring as hell, if not for the interactions with the past.
They, once again, messed up the timing of the whole episode.
The 6 is due to the fact that, nevertheless, there are many things to consider and maybe having read the books made it boring for me to watch.
Considering the changes? I always shielded the changes. I liked them. And some of the ones made in this episode are actually good, but others make no sense. Without diving into book spoilers, tell me: how did Mat travel all the way from tar Valon to Shadar Logoth in only a few days, when they needed a whole month earlier in ep.5?
This episode is a mess. It was hard to do worst than the book finale, and you did.
As always, you are saved by a great cast and a solid production, but notice this: this one was bad.
Now, I'm sorry Rafe to say this, but you weren't the best choice. You were the director for Agents of Shield, who had 23 episodes per season, and still had pacing and plot issues. In fact, it is only worst here
You had some good intuitions. Just work it out, this is not the rythm a fantasy epic should take. And listen more to MR. Sanderson: his WoT books are the best in the series.
Overall: BAD! WRONG!
For Amazon: this show is gonna sink with 8 episodes per season. And I't better sink, before messing up book 12-14 Rand because of pacing issues!!!
EP 8 SPOILERS!
P. S do we want to talk about THEM at the ending causing badass tsunami just to kill that little girl? As Cadsuane would say: PUAH!
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Good movie. A masterpiece? My god, you gotta watch some real cinema!
Classic Marvel movie, and a lot of fan service. Delivered in a decent way: it was hard to give each character the right screen time. I will tell you: it did not convince me at all, yet I can see all the problematics in doing a remarkable job, and therefore I can forgive them. So:
1) acting: 8/10. William Dafoe is perfect, he is on another level. Seriously, this guy was born for this role. Doc Oc as good as always. The rest of them are on a good level, except for Zendaya: she has just 3 expressions for all the movie;
2) Plot: mediocre. This isn't necessarily a problem, a simple plot with a good message is better than a complex plot with nothing underneath. And this film had a message: overcome rage and darkness to do what is right, not what you want. I appreciate that, even though I like darker characters, but it fits Spider-Man, therefore it is spotted!
3) OST: marvelous. OST from first trilogy brought a smile to my face. New one is epic. Good job!
4) CGI. Christ, it is on another level. You can see the effect of the CGI elements on the real word. Though, Lizard really sucks... And that's the reason we never see him with some light: because you would notice how poorly he has been developed! Like carnage and Venom...
5) Mistakes? A lot of them. To list a few:
A) You just had your life ruined and therefore the lives of the ones you love, and you care about Happy and May relationship? You got to revisit your priorities boy!
B) Crappy dialogue in most of the cases; very good one in other cases. The problem is: at times, it is in the wrong spot (like them talking on the statue about the cobwebs: after what just happened and about to start what's going to happen? Bad idea;
C) Ned is fun but kinda cliché and his jokes are always predictable. It's the actor that makes you laugh, he is very good!;
D) characters don't seem to make up their mind, they change their mentality for futile reasons and often do not behave consequently;
E) Prodigious experiments delivered by a school boy in just few hours. Yes, I get he is a genius with tremendous tech and whatever, but it is just as crappy as Tony Stark coming up with a time machine in just a few hours;
And there would be many more. All in all, a decent film with an interesting finale, spoiled only by the fact that, as always, it is good Vs Evil and you know what's going to happen. Yet, a kudos to the writers: I'm happy they didn't compete over the magic cube of Strange's, as i thought they would do. And, as long as I don't appreciate so much fan service, it was good seeing some characters again.
So, a masterpiece? Not for me. It has still the classic Marvel crap that spoiled some of it. A disappointment? No. Even if I hated the film, and I didn't, just because of marvelous CGI and score and some of the acting, this film is a 6. To each one his own I guess.
The Wheel of Time: The Dark Along the Ways (2021)
Some imperfections, but a very good episode nevertheless!
-Acting: 7/10. As usual, Nynaeve, Moiraine and Lan were perfect. Very good acting for the others (damn, does Marcus feel... Perrin!), except for Egwene and Rand: let me explain. They were both good, yet there is something in Egwene that makes her feel... fake? She will, I am sure, fit the character (episode 5 gave me a wonderful proof of her fitting this role), but I think I saw her acting the same way for 7 episodes: maybe she didn't have the right chance yet. Rand... it is another type of problem: Josha was very good in this, expecially while talking to Min (Min is like I imagined her to behave while reading the books. And I can already see their chemistry), but his character seems so anonymus, because of how poorly he was hidden during 6 episodes. Rand, which is, in my opinion, one of the best, if not the best, character ever created by human hand, is anonymus here: Sure, he MUST grow (up) before becoming the complex and beloved character that I grew up with... but until now he did nothing, there is no scene of Rand worth remembering (there are very few until now, but still, this is only season one), and in episodes like 5 and 6 he only had 2 or 3 scenes. So, if I didn't know how gorgeous he'll become, I'd be bored by show Rand, and I'd be very pissed of by the big reveal. So not Josha's fault, but showrunners. If he fits the role, he will have plenty of occasions to prove himself: Rand becomes so complex that only a genius will be able to represent him;
-Score: well, we have the OST in the old tongue. I guess it's a 9/10;
-Changes: 1) Min. The only change is her home town. And her first vision. We'll talk about this one later. 2) Moiraine explains why it's better that Mat didn't make it into the Ways. For me fixes episode 6, because it actually makes sense that, if Mat were to be the Dragon, with his head being so messed up, he should be at 100 miles from the Dark One. 3) Red Ajah hunting down Mat? We'll see in season 2. I can see were they are going.
-Pacing: good. Not excellent, still some minor issues, but for the first time after Dragon Reborn I felt that almost everyone had its screentime (Rand got more than 2 frames this one, so good!);
-Filler? No, damn it. We get to know about Lan's past, Rand's past, we see relationships develop, a foreshadowing of the plot, the revelation of the Dragon Reborn. How can this be filler? I can see hoever people's complaint with the Egwene x Perrin x Rand. We'll talk about that later but yes, this was filler and almost broke immersion for me;
- Cons?: sure.
1) If I didn't read the books, Rand's reveal would seem quite unexpected. That's because they managed his character poorly (as long as hiding him) until now, so it will be like... WTF?
2) The big revelation was good. Not perfect, I pictured it in other ways in my mind so I will just say good (with the whole ko'di stuff makes sense that Rand hits the targets once he embreces the revelation). Though, when Machin Shin tells for the second time "you are the dragon reborn", we have a shot at Rand's face. It's too close, his nose seems so big, and he almost fades to the corner. Well, I ain't no director, but I think there were more efficient ways to deliever that; 3) The Perrin x Egwene x Rand. Now, having read the italian version, I can tell you there was no hint to that. But several abroad friends told me that in english Jordan wrote some subtle words to hint to that. Surely, in the series we got a lot of hints to this. Subtle, but they were there. So the problem is that this thing felt rushed, and pretty unnecessary: the time they spent on this could have been used in many more efficent ways for exploring Fal Dara...
-Setting: Fal Dara is marvelous. The Ways too, but both of them are too quick. We'll see more about Fal Dara in season 2; the Blight is terrigìfying, but there is one problem: were did the soldiers at Tarwin's Pass go when Moiraine and Rand walk towards the Blight? Bah. 9/10 as setting!
Mistake? 1): Min telling everything Tam has done since he got Rand. Well, Min sees images, not the whole life! So it felt kinda strange to me that she knew where and how Rand was raised. This is also different from the books;
2) Nynaeve having sex with Lan so easily? It isn't like her. Yet, it is a pro for me: their relationship in the books was slowed down even by Myrelle's filler subplot, so their relationship already feels strong: so definitely a PRO for me! Even though, at this point, I would have expected that all those subplots were already established: now we MUST talk about what's important: the Dragon and the Eye. So, not a bad scene or whatsoever, just the wrong episode imho;
-Fixes: yes. Moiraine's speech about Mat makes sense, and now I can see that the logic of Mat non going to the Eye is superior to the books. Still worried about season 2 plot for Mat.
All in all, it would be an 8.5, but I gave it an 8 for many reasons: camera work still ain't great; where did Loial go? I expected the revelation to be more badass; the bad work they've done with hiding Rand upsetted some people. IGN gave the first episode a 9 and said this was the weakest of the series because of changes. IGN doesn't know crap about WoT books and of course episode 1 is crap in comperison to any other, especially to this one, but they were right on the fact that Egwene X Perrin X Rand was unnecessary, and Rand's revelation was arbitrary, because that's how it felt. Besides, still some minor pacing problems, Egwene's actress didn't do a top notch performance as she did in ep 5; and the soldiers at tarwin pass make no sense since they randomly disappear. All in all: there is still something wrong about this show. Yes, EoTW is not a masterpiece, a good novel s full of cliché and crap, so it felt like this, but then we have Great hunt which is gorgeous. Maybe it's the fact that I'll have to wait one year to see the mistakes being corrected from showrunners... Don't know. That's why a gave an 8 instead of a 9.
Just deliever a good finale and fix what was wrong in the next season. This episode is good, but very hardly my score of the season will be higher than 7. I need a masterpiece as a final episode!
P. S imho the 1-4 scores are as fake as 10 scores. Even if you didn't like the episode, you have to reward score, pacing, acting and setting. And, even though you loved the episode, there are some mistakes one has to aknowledge. I feel this is the kind of show who gets underserved 10s (no episode was like a Mr Robot or Breaking Bad one in terms of quality) and undeserved 1-4 scores. It will have a complicated life. I hope showrunners will fix their mistakes.
Outer Wilds (2019)
A masterpiece that should teach others how to make a game!
My favourite game of all time. I can't say anything, because every word is a possible spoiler. Just play it, and you'll understand. Alss i can say is that, you will be changed after playing this masterpiece, the greates masterpiece I've ever played.
Futurama: The Late Philip J. Fry (2010)
Just outstanding!
It's remarkable how we just get... I don't know, maybe 30 seconds per age, but at the end of this travel, you feel like you saw the entire future history. And it's mindblowing to see how much it changes, and to think about that, even though we think in the future there will be tech and innovations, something big and horrible may happen, throwing us back thousands of years.
This episode is deep and amazing, really makes you think. Bravo!
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
The once and forever masterpiece
I'm just spending two words on the importance of silence. Here silence assumes multiple meanings, from terror to the passing of time, to discovery... and when the outstanding OST kicks in, you can feel it in you.
The contrast between an advanced technology and an old OST, with violins and pianos, the contrast between what's happening and the terrifying silence. The outstanding photography, colors merge in a perfect way. Every shot is a picture. Simply the best film I've ever watched, maybe not the best in history, I'm no one to claim that, but it surely is my favourite film.
The Wheel of Time: Blood Calls Blood (2021)
Same stuff, different way:
So I'll give to reviews:
1) BOOK READER:. It's a mess. Let's say book accuracy is a 5/10, because everything happening in the books happens here, but in different ways and cities; white cloaks seem fine but there's too little of them alongside Valda, whose actor is just fire, but as a villain he lacks the charm to be respected and appreciated. It does (at least to me) feel cartoony, even though the actor is brilliant. Tar Valon was just too good and I can therefore forgive them for the Caemlyn arc, which yes it's very important in the books, therefore it's a huge miss, but there are clever ways to do the same things in Tar Valon, nevertheless.
2) USER REVIEW: pacing was... Meh, the problem of this episode is that we spent 25 minutes on a useless character, for what, proving Lan is human too? The aftermath of Aes Sedai- Warders bond? There were better and cheaper ways to show so, this was a huge mistake, because some scenes where therefore sooo rushed, like:
SPOILER
1)Nynaeve meets Rand thanks to Loial: pacing issue. Yes, the Rand - Loial and Nynaeve - Liandrin dialogue was actually clever because it makes sense, but it also gives the impression that the scene was cut, like episode one;
2) Valda goes from badass to scared kitty when Perrin breaks free: bad acting transition, I didn't expect it from Abdul, even though a very good scene, if not for Egewne stabbing Valda: I know she is not a warrior, but damn, if you want to kill, kill. This is the cliché I hate the most in fantasy. Good Perrin didn't finish him off: fits his characters and philosophy about war and weapons;
3) There are also other problems, like Daniel had a wonderful performance, but he overacted at the and imho, kinda ruining the scene;
END OF SPOILER
Loial is... well, from the first pictures he looked like a wrong cosplay, but I don't know, maybe it's because the actor's second name must be Loial, but he was great, he just talked, behaved, moved, sounded, felt like Loial; his nose, his body (if not for the height, something that could have been arranged very easily but I get it could be troubling to take a shot of both a human and a Ogier in the same spot: like, the camera should be too far away, or you should cut a large part of the Human's body from the shot, which wouldn't be so good looking, but a little bit higher than Rand was the least I was expecting). But seeing him playing made me actually realize I love this Loial and it can only get even better: good job!!;
The bad of this episode is focusing on Stepin, which was good because the actor is really good and explains us what warders are brought to do after the Aes Sedai leaves the bond, but we didn't need half the episode for Stepin, there were more important things to focus on. Like a proper introduction to the Forsaken, because Robert Jordan never gave me enough of them, and I would like them to be even more important than they were in the book series!
Acting has improved for Egewne and Perrin: I don't know if it is because they brushed her hair and is now long and straight like silk, but now that "I wanna be a queen" look she exposed without managing it for 4 episodes now kills it: she really did look like a queen on her throne, wonderful performance. Also Perrin had an amazing one.
So, why am I giving it an 7? Because it was a 7.5, Stepin's mistake is some basic stuff I didn't expect them to fail, we still have some pacing issues due to this unnecessary plotlines, and, therefore, I am really afraid they are going to rush the whole Eye of the World stuff, assuming (those are just my own thoughts) that the last episode will be about Snowblood (The Wheel of Time 0: New Spring) and the Dragon's birth. So, if this is true, only 2 more episodes for story progression.
I would have liked to give an 8, because it is a good (yet problematic) build up episode, and Tar Valon is simply magnificent, but there are some mistakes they need to focus on for season 2, this is very important: season one for now is a 7/10 for me, because the overall plot was weak and there were major pacing issues. The source material is hard to adapt, and I'm actually fine with most of the changes, because I know how the story goes forward, but it's like I'm watching something new (as long as they don't make bull**it changes like the Dragon Reborn one) but they need to get better with it.
All in all, huge step back from the episode Dragon Reborn.
The Wheel of Time: Leavetaking (2021)
Too fast paced (but the series does get better)
Bad, bad pilot. Would have been a mediocre episode, but as a pilot, it's really bad. I mean, not for content, there are some things that can still be saved, like the Trollocs attack, a good CGI (expecially for the Fade), and the beautiful landscapes and village (the only reasons I'm not giving it a 4), but there were some problems:
1) Black, asian people in the 200years isolated Two Rivers. I have no problem with diverse skinned people acting togheter, I think it's even better; the problem is, I expected this in Caemlyn, not in a far isolated mountain village: that makes no sense in temrs of world building;
2) Cold opening: Lews Therin would have been better, because like that the pilot felt too generic;
3) 4 Ta'veren... that's not right. I agree with a lot of changes in episodes 3 and 4, but this one was unnecessary and possibily dangerous, even if I doubt that;
4) Too fast paced. I know Rafe Judkins asked for 10 episodes and a 2 hour pilot. While I agree with Amazon that a 2 hours episode is too much, 10 episodes were the least I would have asked.
5) People don't complain at the end, when they departure;
6) Perrin's wife still has to prove to be a smart change from the books;
All in all is a 5/10. Would have been a 7 if it wasn't a pilot, but being so, it felt too generic, too fast paced, like it wanted to deliver so much and failed. I don't like Egwene's actress and Perrin's (while Perrin gets better in episode 4, Egwene doesent, at least for me).
This pilot caused a lot of stress to the series: many people will quit it because of this rushed episode. Why was Lost so hyped (at least until season 3?)? Why is Mr robot soo good? Because the pilots are fire! You are already involved. Here it doesn't happen!
But, I repeat: it DOES get BETTER!
The Wheel of Time: The Dragon Reborn (2021)
This was supposed to be the LEVEL, not the PEAK of the season (after series finale!)
This episode was outstanding. Whilst I gave the first one a 4-5 score, and was very much worried about the future of the series, this really reliefs me. (EDIT: episode 6 is awful. No I don't feel relieved, but Dragon Reborn it's outstanding anyway. This was a WONDERFUL hour of Wheel of Time. That's what I've been dreaming for the past 7 years. Wish they learned from this episode...). ANYWAY, let's review this bomb, we'll weep about the mess of episode 6 In Ep. 6 review:
So, it is indeed different from the books, but I find it to be even better: you see, Jordan was a great world builder, but there were some massive pacing problems in the books, expecially from 7-10 and book 1, whilst 2-6 were just badass, because his chapters where long (most of the times) built up to something great (hopefully). In this optic, each event of the book was separated from the other by tons of pages, meaning that in the show we would have seen quite a considerable amount of filler scenes and episodes, thus having even more pacing issues, and thus people would complain about that. I think the way they are mashing up different chapters (like in this episode and 3) and books is very, very good. That's the way to go (as a 2 times reader).
Some low points? There are:
The dialogue about Moiraine's dog is anticlimatix imho, not a master choice to put it there;
Thom's hypotesis about Mat is rushed and not fully motivated;
Saidar still looks fake. Saidin too in some ways, but it's 100 times cooler, and there's a Saidin CGI spotlight in this episode, that was very good;
The shot at the 4 red Aes Sedai all of different Ethnicities. I mean, no problem with that, I am happy that this happens, but it was just unnecessary... there are better ways to push thowards Ethnicities equality!
I still don't like Egwene's actress, but Perrin has improved (they both provide a wonderful performance in episode 5!).
Dialogue is on another level. Ila's motivation for being a Tinker is deep and believable.
All in all: well done!
Note: this is just a P. S after finishing the series. It is not someting that compromised my rating of the episode "Dragon Reborn", which remains a bomb, in my opinion.
As said in the title, this was supposed to be the level of the production, not the peak. Sadly it gets worse. Only episode 7 manages to be almost as good, but episode 5 and 6, whilst still being enjoyable, have some deep problem... and the finale... I hope it gets demolished. THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE LEVEL!!!!
Vinland Saga (2019)
Just brilliant
This anime was pure gold. It's not a 10 only because Thorfinn wasn't fully explored, and his developement is expected in season 2.
But, believe me, it's just soo beautiful, everything from the plot to the pacing, to the soundtrack, to the scenaries, animations... it's gorgeous. Some characters grow on you in a way you'd never expected the first time you encountered them. Just watch this gem of an anime, it deserves so much more.
The Wheel of Time: A Place of Safety (2021)
Perrin sucks. Lan is good. Rand is great.
1) Perrin part sucks, because it's boring and what we've seen of the wolves at almost mid-season it's not very charming, meaning they'll possibily rush it out (I hope not). I still don't like Egwene's actress;
2) Lan and Nyanaeve were good. Nothing special, but we start to see some build up for the characters and their relationships, which is very good;
3) Nynaeve first scene is badass as hell. Everyone screaming at "girl power", no, that's just a girl defending herself. Nynaeve is always badass, don't forget that!;
4) Rand and Mat are great. Their friendship feels solid, Breen's Spring is amazing (they built the town from scratch!).
The highlight of this plot branch are Thom (totally different from books, but far, far better than the books, and "the man who can't forget" is a great foreshadowing) and Dana, which never appeared in the books either, but feels much better than any Dark Friend Jordan ever wrote: her motivation is believable and adds some depth to the Dark Friends. In the books, all of them follow the Dark One because they want power, she has a deeper reason, and I respect her for that.
All in all, it would be a 7.5, because Perrin is boring and Lan and Nynaeve were good but not excellent, but the 8 is due to the improvement in pacing and storytelling, dialogues and character developement.
The Wheel of Time: Shadow's Waiting (2021)
Still too fast paced, they are always in an hurry, but there are positive steps forward
So, some problems from the previous episode are still here: too fastpaced, so fast Shadar Logoth (which is beautiful, and Machin Shin is terrifying) is used only for the blink of an eye. CGI is better because we don't see Saidar nor Saidin (which are the low points of this CGI). There is some character developement, but it still feels like those poor people are running around in a rat race, they have no breath; still feels too generic.
Mat misses a very important encounter when in Shadar Logoth, even though before judging this I'll have to see how they will introduce him, sooner or later; yet, from the trailer we get that this character had to be introduced here (Mat's "alright, let's make a deal" is missing).
The main problem is that it's too fast paced, and, still, it feels uninspired and very, very flat. Action without some character developement is useless.
But, it is an improvement upon the messy pilot!
