Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio (2022)
A bit too long and dull
I like Guillermo Del Toro but his last few movies have been a bit dull. Interesting themes, beautiful to look at but like Pinocchios torso they're hollow.
This is far too long for a kids movie and seemingly for no reason. It really drags in parts. Terrible casting choice for Pinocchio. His voice is so irritating! His initial naivety and wonderment about the world he suddenly finds himself in should have been funny and whimsical. Instead I found myself hoping he'd turn back into a real puppet and shut up.
I liked the idea of updating the story but I feel like it didn't add anything. Just a lot of side characters who's storylines felt rushed or unnecessary. If this is aimed at an older audience then it would've suited an even darker take on the story and if it was purely for kids it would benefit from some more fun and excitement.
So overall pretty dull and too long. Gets a 6 for the great character design and animation but honestly not anywhere near the brilliance of what Laika has been putting out over the last ten years.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Best cinema experience of my life
(Note: I watched this film in Imax 3D)
I had high expectations for this movie. I am one of the few people who absolutely loved the first one, mainly because I saw it in 3D at the time and it blew me away. The story for the first film was weak I admit but the world they created was incredible and this film builds on that and everything is done with breathtaking realism.
The story is much stronger and has real emotional depth. I cared about the characters and (ridiculous as it sounds) even teared up at a scene when a boy bonds with a whale. It look's beautiful and the sentiment behind all of it is beautiful.
The level and expectation of great vfx has declined so much over the last 10 years that something like this where they've really taken the time and effort is much appreciated.
I hope this is successful because I can't wait to go back to Pandora time and time again for future instalments. All the negative people on here need to lighten up and just enjoy the sheer spectacle of what is a truly groundbreaking film in terms of vfx.
I'd also like to point out that I dragged my girlfriend along with me to see this and she absolutely hates Avatar.
She loved this movie and has now been converted.
One of us, one of us, one of us.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Made it to 25 minutes. Awful film
I can't understand how this film has such a high rating. It is so poorly written and dull. The main character isn't very likeable so it was hard to get invested in the story (the two minutes of exposition at the start really didn't help either). Regardless I tried to keep watching but then the titular dragon showed up and pushed me over the edge. Nothing against Awkwafina, I've liked her in other things but that character was just annoying. So I gave up. Made it to 25 minutes.
Side not: I'm a big fan of Eddie Murphy but I found his dragon in Mulan incredibly annoying too. Maybe Disney just shouldn't do dragons.
Coming 2 America (2021)
I absolutely loved this
Can't believe how negative these reviews are!
When I heard they were making a sequel I was worried it wouldn't live up to the original but when I saw the trailer I thought, "that actually doesn't look terrible." So I went into it not expecting too much and I absolutely loved it. The plot is quite predictable but it's a comedy not a psychological thriller. It's basically the reverse of the original. The original cast are great and the callbacks are great. The fact they get so many characters to return is actually amazing. When those two rapping twins showed up I almost lost my mind. People getting upset about the strong female character thing need to chill out. It's not forced down your throat. You're introduced to the three daughter characters as they one by one spar with their father which itself is a reminder of Prince Akeems skills with a staff from the original film. This scene immediately gives you an idea of what each of the princess's are like and the ambition of the eldest daughter who (spoiler alert) defeats Wesley Snipes' warlord later in the same fashion as Prince Akeem took down Samual L Jackson's would be robber. Overall this is just a fun film filled with nostalgia and a lot of laughs. Only thing I can agree with from these negative reviews is that the barbershop scenes are the best but they always were.
