The Seven Deadly Sins: Prisoners of the Sky (2018)
The Downfall of an Incredible Anime
I have a lot of issues with this movie for starters. Although the anime itself is something that I love dearly, the movie is something I loathe. To begin, one of the strengths of the anime is the fact that there is no filler. There is the four episode special between the seasons, but most don't consider that to be part of the story. Seven Deadly Sins: Prisoners of the Sky is entirely filler, bringing no extra enhancement into the story. Had this movie been built on a side story, I would have enjoyed it much more.
It is also very difficult to pinpoint where this filler fits into the anime. There is a very short segment when all of the sins are together which is the only possible placement for this movie, but still, due to Meliodas's lack of emotions, putting it here does not make sense, and it cannot be put anytime later because at that point the story dives into the curse.
Because the story introduces plenty of new characters, we have wonder: Where were they during all of this time? It feels like a disruptive plot hole that I cannot get over.
As a manga reader, watching certain scenes was brutal, specifically the scene in which a sword is stuck inside Meliodas's chest, a sword only a goddess can pull out. Obviously, with Elizabeth being a goddess, which is what she is called, I could not help screaming in frustration at the ignorance of the characters. Even if most didn't know about her goddess side, Merlin would know, so she could have easily solved the problem.
The worst part of this entire movie was not the storyline itself, but the issues the movie caused inside the company. Because it generally flopped, A-1 Pictures decided to drop the anime and move onto other, more successful animes like SAO (bleh). The storyline had to be continued so Studio DEEN picked the story up and, if I may say, butchered it. This is the reason the quality of animation is so poor in season three. And, the reason for this can all be traced back to this movie.
Overall, I find the movie to be boring and cringy in some areas. I am truly disappointed at what this movie has caused in the future of SDS.
