Sleeping with Other People (2015)
RomCom for people who don't normally like them!
This movie is beyond charming. Brie and Sudakis are in top form here and are both adorable without being cloying. It's a super fun film with a real love story at the center - it's messier than most romcoms and that's why this works as a real film, not just more shleck that studios can make a quick profit from. A great cast of supporting players too. Watch this movie if you're stuck inside and have a little levity injected back into life. It's intelligent and will lift your spirits. And the Modern Love/dance/Molly scene is perfect.
Memento (2000)
Nolan's best - prove me wrong!
I recently rewatched this sparkling enigma of cinematic glory, and was still blown away by the concept, style, pacing, acting and just overall Memento-ness of this film! Every single moment of this movie is gripping. I'm convinced you can watch it ad infinitum and still discover new and eye-opening nuggets each viewing. Guy Pearce is pitch perfect, and Carrie-Anne Moss is so diabolically stunning she's scary. Joey Pants with the comic relief is what seals this as hands-down one of the most interesting and well-conceived and executed films of the 2000's. Adapted from a story that Nolan's brother wrote, this whole movie feels so personal - despite it's oddball topic. Just watch the mystery unfold here, as it deepens with each passing minute. It's the very definition of a neo-noir, and should be required viewing for anyone into movies.
I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016)
features some of the scariest moments in recent cinema
OhMyGod this movie terrified me. Everything about it: the pacing, the characters, the never relenting sense of DREAD... Just a magnificently executed piece of cinema. We all knew Ruth Wilson was tremendous from her work on the Affair, but here she SOARS. The emotional pain that seethes under the surface here is palpable, and she never wavers in her conviction. The filmmaking here is a triumph - lighting and shadows and score all used to perfection. The jist of it it is this: you can see a horror movie with blood and guts and murder for two hours and not be scared once - then be home late at night alone and here a creak and be terrified. That's what this movie is: a two-hour long CREAK of TERROR. Beautiful imagery here as well, and metaphors galore. Gothic Lit is brought to present day life with this painstakingly thought out and executed work of art. It really asks: 'what are we afraid of? what in life haunts us? who are we frightened of becoming?' If you need a thrill a minute type of film, skip it, but if you actually like the classics, this is a modern day revisitation. 10 Stars+++
Parched 2: Hangry (2019)
Silliness with a message
As part of the current isolated lockdown, I've been viewing oodles of movies I've been meaning to get to for a while; this is a gem that I'm so glad I discovered. As a POV horror fanatic, I've seen them all, from the shlockiest to the elevated. This one resides in the middle of those scales, and is quite happy to do so. It's definitely not the 'scariest' flick, but the entertainment value runs on high the whole time. This movie points a finger (ie: camera) at the current worldwide obsession with social media, at the way every little thing must be documented and shared. A question most found footage movies can never honestly answer is "why are they still FILMING this?" in the midst of chaos and madness and murder. Here the answer is simple: the main character is so driven to capture 'sharable/like-able footage' that she is willing to put her friends and self in danger, and doesn't want to miss a frame. Overall, the main driving plot element is ridiculous (the water turns them into cannibals), but the actors are quite committed and really bring the story to life. Throw in tons of funny elements and you are giddily watching the S**tshow unfold. And, what really shocked me with this movie, was the ending had a crazy twist. Oh, and if you're wondering, the first movie in this series is not nearly as good, so you can just skip that somewhat of a failed attempt at horror.
Koirat eivät käytä housuja (2019)
Dogs Make GREAT films
You sometimes hear people say things like 'film is dead '- and with all the straight to Netflix drivel that's out there, their argument could be made. This is the type of artwork that counters that debate and flat out obliterates it. Every frame of this movie communicates something beautiful. Every moment does the same. And that is to say, beauty in this case means a slice of life that is heightened and made all the more visceral and real. This is a true 'underdog' story...pardon the pun, but it's about someone who experiences the lowest of lows, and is smacked in the face (literally) with a second chance at love. This films shows that no, the world practically NEVER works out the way we want it, but if we are open to new things, we can not only survive, but also THRIVE. This movie made me cry tears of joy at the end. It's the weird love story that we need right now in this loony world.
February (2015)
poetic and beautiful
This is a true film - the kind that elevates the horror genre to dizzying heights. The mood, atmosphere and tone are so eerily consistent that you really start to feel the isolation and mental undoing of the characters. Expertly acted by the whole cast (Don Draper's daughter in particular is brilliant), it's the kind of movie that gives you chills, because it's not overdone at all. There's a Hitchcockian vibe to it - a less is more, scariness in the shadows feel throughout. It's really a sad poignant story when you look at the whole picture, but regardless, it will send tingles down the spine.
The Room (2019)
best movie yet with the title 'the room'!
Ok it's hard to write a review for this film without spoilers, because the plot is so finely tuned and expertly crafted that the best parts are all the twisted twists! but overall, the concept is simple but FASCINATING. The couple (by the way, the lead actress is stunning and so very convincing, what a performance!) escapes city life for a big rural house. They have some issue with not being able to have kids (backstory), anyway, they get to the house and on a whim make a wish in one room. It comes true. Now ANY wish they make comes to fruition. Of course, a story like this, you know there will be turns and lessons out the ying yang. Suffice it to say, there's one key thing about each wish that makes it hard to venture off the property... Overall, you are kept guessing the whole time; it's a thrill ride that's for sure, and a psychological one at that. I LOVED it! definitely a good film for the current times...
